"The Eagle Has Landed!"
America’s excitement for space began with John F. Kennedy.
John F. Kennedy was sworn in as President of the United States on January 20, 1961. The Cold War was in full bloom. The US felt pressure to catch up to Russia in the “Space Race”. They had already successfully launched a satellite (Sputnik) and a human (Yuri Gagarin) into space.
President Kennedy had a bold vision. If achieved, it would be a significant victory in the ideological battle against Communism. On May 25, 1961, he announced to the world that before the decade ended the United States would put a man on the moon and return him safely to Earth. His declaration was intended to demonstrate to the world the technological superiority of the United States.
A human spaceflight program, Apollo Program, was established to help reach the ambitious goal. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration NASA carried out the program from 1961 to 1972. It involved extensive planning, technological development, and around $22 billion in funding. That is about $176 billion in today’s money.
July 16, 1969, Apollo 11 launched a crew of three from Cape Kennedy with the purpose of fulfilling a decade’s long goal. Over a million spectators, including Vice President Spiro Agnew and former President Lyndon Johnson, watched the lift off from Cape Kennedy. The spectators gathered along the nearby highways and beaches. Hundreds of millions watched it on television worldwide.
The lunar mission’s crew members were Commander Neil Armstrong, Lunar Module Pilot Edwin, “Buzz” Aldrin, and command module pilot Michael Collins. 8 days, 3 hours, 18 minutes, and 33 seconds later President Kennedy’s goal of putting a man on the moon before the end of the decade was accomplished. Before the mission was over two men stepped foot on its surface.
That Moon landing mission consisted of a complex series of maneuvers.
The lunar module, the “Eagle” had to separate from the command module (Columbia) and land in the Sea of Tranquility on the surface. When the Eagle touched down the first human to step onto the Moon’s surface, Neil Armstrong, announced that “the Eagle has landed”. Millions on Earth watched a fuzzy image of him take his first step from the Eagle and speak the now famous words, “That’s one small step for (a) man, one giant leap for mankind.” He and “Buzz” Aldrin spent nearly two days on the moon’s surface collecting 47.5 pounds of lunar material and conducting scientific experiments. Michael Collins spent those two days piloting the command module around the moon in profound solitude. Once the mission was completed the three astronauts left lunar orbit and headed back to earth. All three safely returned to Earth splashing down in the Pacific Ocean 900 miles Southwest of Hawaii on July 24, 1969.
That moon walk mission was a defining moment in American history. It was led by a desire to assert US dominance in the space race, inspiring national pride through remarkable achievement in technology.

In 1969 I was in college. Here is how I remember it.

"A Pretty Redhead, Three Men, and a Nation"

I was waiting for the pretty red head
In the lobby of her college dorm.
A very special night was planned.
I could no longer suppress my feelings.

Unbeknownst to the pretty red head,
Elaborate plans were made
To tell her how I felt that day.
But a complication televised itself!

The emotions I felt that day
Would be competing
With three men and a nation.
And I was ok with that.

I was in the lobby of her dorm
Mixed with emotions
Waiting for her to appear.
But there were those three men!

The pretty red head was running late.
That was both good and unfortunate,
Good because I would see her again!
Unfortunate because I saw the three men!

I was watching a blurry video
On the lobby tv.
Everyone there was focused
On that same video.

I knew what we were seeing
Had never happened before.
A National objective set a decade ago,
Was being reached live on tv.

That pretty redhead
Was about to exit the elevator.
My heart was racing
To see her again.

But those three men
Were about to accomplish
A nation's goal.
An epic event no doubt!

Those three men on that tv
Had finally reached the moon.
Two of which stepped upon its surface,
Fulfilling a nation’s challenge from long ago.

Little did I know the emotions stirred
By a redhead, three men and a nation
Would be just as strong today
As it was in that dorm lobby long ago.

It was indeed a very special day
For me, my pretty redhead,
Three men, and a nation
On that extraordinary day, over half a century ago.

Today, excitement is building again. In 2026 the United States will initiate plans to go where “no man has gone before!” Mars exploration by 2031.
But first, in February 2026 NASA will launch toward the moon again with its Artemis program. Its goal is to establish a long-term lunar base. Through its scientific discoveries, technological advances, and learning how to adapt to living on another world, Artemis campaign will prepare humans for missions to Mars.
Space exploration history will once again be made.

I admit to being old enough to remember those days. Here's hoping that round two will be just as successful!

Thank you for reading and commenting. It was fun watching the 1st time to the Moon. I hope to experience the fun when man walks on Mars.

Thank you for reading and commenting. Artemis program is schedule to send 4 astronauts on a "fly-by" the moon next month. I am excited for the space program. Our country is once again "Off to the wild blue yonder!"
