The girl on a train who could not speak
I got into the compartment of the train when it stopped at the station. I took my allotted seat and looked outside the window as the train started to move it was drizzling outside and the sky was dark. I felt it was going to be a rather miserable journey so I took out the novel that I carried in my bag and flipped through the pages.I was not able to concentrate on the novel with the wet weather and the gloomy skies.

After a while of staring at the pages of the novel i got up to go to the pantry car to kill my boredom. I slowly made my way to the entrance of the pantry car and I notice an urchin girl standing there and staring longingly at the food on sale displayed in the glass case.

As I entered into the pantry car ,the salesman at the counter, was trying to chase away the little girl who was trying not to be frightened but continuing to stare shyly at all the eatables on display.

The salesman's voice grew louder, muttering under his breath that such wretches did not deserve to be on the train creating a nuisance for respectable passengers.
I was filled with anger at the vendor as well as pity for the urchin girl who much have been famished. So I told the vendor the little urchin girls was with me. I took her by the hand and made her stand in front of the display case and point to what all she wanted to eat. Shyly she pointed to the cakes , buns an pastries one by one . I told the disapproving, sales man to pack up everything and give it to the little girl. The sales man bundled it up and gave it with a condescending look. I paid for all the food and told the little girl to go and eat.

The little girl managed to carry all the food by folding the hem of her skirt and quickly ran out of the pantry car into another compartment. I ordered myself a coffee and as I was drinking the coffee I had this suspicious thought that the little girl had run away to go hide in a corner and eat all the food by herself.

Curiosity got the better of me and I decided to slowly walk through compartment after compartment looking for the little urchin girl. After a few compartment I heard squeals of laughter and noise of delight from children. Soon I came across the most amazing site of the little urchin girl sitting in a circle with four other similar urchin children .all the food that I had bought for her piled up in the center. They were passing around each of the cakes and pastries so that each could take a bite to taste it while squealing with glee.

I stood there quietly watching this amazing scene of friendship and sharing ,when suddenly they noticed me standing there and became very quiet and seemed frightened. I smiled and quickly turned around and started walking away hoping that these unfortunate children would continue in their new found happiness.

As I returned back to my seat and sat down I thought of how even in their poverty the little urchins were willing to share whatever blessings they received.

Soon the trained reached the train station and stopped.I looked out of the window and saw the five urchins jumping out of the train and skipping away smiling and laughing. My journey was brighter after having encountered these children and their joy at simple pleasures in life.
