The Day Bigfoot Came To Town
It was six a.m. on a Sunday morning when Allen Knowing, walking his little dog, Snaggle, past Birdie’s Diner, rounded the corner and froze. Fear like lightening shot through him as he stared wide-eyed at the huge furry beast standing before him. He was so shocked he didn’t even notice the smell like burnt popcorn rolling off the creature.
Allen wanted to run, but his body wouldn’t co-operate. Instead, all he could do was remain there and stare in fear and disbelief at Bigfoot. Even little Snaggle froze. The hairy beast also stopped short, twitching a little as it also stared. “Yow, a human!” it said in a low guttural voice then spun around and loped off like a drunken sailor into the surrounding forest.
Once his fear had subsided enough for Allen to move again, he tugged on Snaggle’s leash then hurried inside Birdie’s Diner, which had just opened. Collapsing onto one of the stools, he stared at the counter until Birdie, noticing his destress, asked, “Are you having chest pains or something?”
Allen shook his head. Then finding his voice, he replied, “I just saw a Bigfoot!”
Instead of laughing or saying something crazy, Birdie just looked steadily at Allen and remarked, “That’s what they all say.”
“No, I’m serious! I just saw a Bigfoot! It was around the back of your diner!”
Turning away from Allen, Birdie began working with the coffee machine. “Did it try attacking you?” she asked.
Allen replied, “No. It froze when it saw me then ran off into the woods.” Allen hesitated. “But I think I heard it speak.”
This time Birdie turned to Allen grinning. “Oh, yeah, what did it say?”
“I think it said something about me being human.”
Birdie looked steadily at Allen. “Maybe you should have some coffee,” she suggested.
“But I don’t have any money on me.”
“That’s okay,” said Birdie, “Coffee is on me.”
Allen nodded then quietly sipped his drink while other customers began arriving. When he tried telling them what he had seen, no one believed him.
The following Sunday, Allen walked Snaggle again to the rear of Birdie’s Diner. The Bigfoot was there, bent over the dumpster. Allen almost laughed as he found himself staring at the creature’s huge hairy butt. While he watched it rummaging inside the dumpster, he heard the creature’s guttural voice say, “Why don’t she give me syrup for my pancakes?”
Startled, Allen backed up and stopped near the corner of the building. Was Birdie giving it food? Was that why she didn’t react when he told her what he had seen? A curious expression washed over his face as he practically tiptoed back to the diner.
Once inside, he sat on a stool near the counter. “I’ll have what you’ve been feeding your friend,” he said to Birdie. She stopped short but didn’t show any reaction.
“Don’t worry,” said Allen. “I won’t tell anyone, but I will take syrup with my pancakes.”
Afterwards, Allen consumed a lot of his meals at the diner for free.
