Going to Sleep
Born 1980, F, from Eagan, MN, United States
It was the sound Megan loved to hear as she was lying in bed waiting for sleep. The familiar metallic click/crunch of a soda can being opened was comforting. That sound meant that her daddy was home from work and all was well. She could imagine his thumb pressing the thin tin downwards to open the can and then bending the tab backwards to make it lie flat against the top, a move that looked so easy, but her small hands had difficulty managing it. She pictured her mom and daddy sitting on the couch together, her daddy with his long legs stretched out straight, toes pointing toward the ceiling, and her mom with her knees bent and her feet tucked cozily against the inside of the armrest. She heard her parents speak softly for a few moments and then the tv was turned on, the volume kept low. Megan turned onto her side, held her stuffed bunny close to her, and peacefully drifted off to sleep.

02/16/2026A beautiful story. This makes me think of my Childhood. We didn't have much, but we had two loving Parents and a safe Home. Your story is very comforting.
