Mechanical Difficulties

Mechanical Difficulties
One moon-lit night as Eveline was taking out a bag of trash from her apartment, she spotted something hovering in the sky that had her curious. It had blinking lights like a plane, but she was sure it wasn’t a plane or a jet, mostly because it wasn’t moving. Plus, it was low enough that she could see the outline of the craft between the lights—it was shaped like a triangle.
Eveline stopped near the dumpster, holding the bag of trash and stared upward at the stationary craft. Was it a UFO, she wondered? It had to be, she thought. Especially, after she saw it shoot off like a missile toward the ocean five miles away, while leaving behind no sound whatso ever.
Later that night, the TV news reported that numerous people had also spotted the same craft, which they said hovered over the ocean for a second before shooting straight up into the night sky. Speculation about it ran rampant.
The next evening, Eveline was returning from a dinner with friends when she saw a similar object hovering about a hundred yards out from the shoreline and about twenty feet or so above the quiet ocean waters. The lights from the craft’s undercarriage shown bright on the water’s rippling surface.
Pulling to the side of the road, Eveline stopped her car and stared through the open window at the UFO, or whatever it was. Below the road on the beach, a group of onlookers, about twenty or so, stood staring at the craft. Just then, two police cars screeched to a halt, their lights flashing red, blue, and white, as two cops jumped out from each and stood on the sand also staring at the strange craft. One was speaking into his hand-held radio.
As she stared, Eveline realized she could not hear any engine noise coming from the craft. The only sound beside her car’s idling engine, was the hiss of ocean waves gently rolling onto the shore. But at the same time, Eveline realized she was also hearing a voice, which she thought was strange? She was too far away from the crowd on the beach to be hearing any of them speaking. And yet, she was definitely hearing someone. He or she was speaking in English but with an accent she didn’t recognize.
Turning her head, she tried to discern what was being said. After a few moments, she realized the voice was repeating the same question. “Can anyone help? We’re experiencing mechanical difficulties.”
That’s when the whole situation hit her like a wakeup slap in the face. The voice must have been coming from inside the craft, which meant, she wasn’t hearing it with her ears but was telepathically hearing it in her mind.
Startled, she continued to watch until a minute later when the craft shot straight up into the night sky and disappeared into the darkness. After a moment, the crowd began to disperse.
Feeling a sense of disappointment, Eveline decided it too was time for her to leave. Putting her car in gear, she turned back onto the road and continued home, all the while going over in her mind what she had experienced. As far as she was concerned, it had been absolutely insane!
That night, the TV news, once again, broadcast a report about the strange craft. No one could say where it was from, but many agreed, if it was a real UFO, it proved we are not alone in the universe.
Mumbling to herself, Eveline agreed.
