Aspirational selling
Born 1948, M, from Kent - garden of England, United Kingdom
The psychology of selling and promotion is both simple and complex, and increasingly we are being taken for suckers by those who are putting ideas into our subconscious mind in order to increase sales and income for themselves or their clients. The advertising industry is a vast network of smaller companies under an umbrella of large corporations who endeavour to influence us into buying more and questioning less. Yes, we are, in the vernacular, being taken for a ride!
Much advertising is now aimed at our aspirational proclivities, rather than informing about the product and its benefits, and increasingly we seem unable to differentiate between need and desire, or quality and fashion.
Often we now understand little of what we are buying or what is offered, instead we are being influenced by images which touch our sensibilities with romance and the fictions of daily life, a sentimentalism which inspires us to need more than we need in reality.
Subliminally we are inspired to think that we need things, to conform, and to aspire to better, whilst spending on things inspired by want, not need.
For example, when did you last see an advert for a car which explained its simple technical aspects, rather than showing what fun and experiences you may enjoy in it, on that sunny mountain road or parked beside a palm tree on a deserted beach?
Likewise we are now being influenced by ‘Entry Level’ a curious term which implies that there is better ahead, but please buy this in the meantime!
Many of the worlds most famous and recognisable photographs were taken using very simple cameras, it was not necessary to use over sophisticated equipment, as the picture is actually in the eye and mind of the photographer, not in the camera itself, which is of course only an optical device, used for recording the image which the photographer sees and composes, and using human vision and artistry.
However, we are influenced into the belief that a better camera will produce better images, and from a technical sense, they often will, if fully understood and used to full capability, but the actual success of a photograph is in its composition, it’s importance and its ability to convey meaning to the viewer, - the camera itself is merely a tool.
In a similar way we are influenced into believing that more expensive golf clubs will make one a better golfer, that a named make of guitar will produce better music, that the brand of fishing rod as promoted by a celebrity, will catch more and bigger fish, or a shirt with a designer logo will bring peer group status.
Of course, this is all fantasy, a fiction developed to part us from our money without questioning our true need or necessity - yes, we are being conned, and paying for it with our inherent aspiration and stupidity.
There are none so blind as those who refuse to see.

02/26/2026You said a lot in a few words. Commercials tell us this cream will make us look younger and thus be more desirable.
A very concise look into the world of Advertising.
Help Us Understand What's Happening

02/27/2026Hi Shirley, thanks for your comment, it is appreciated. This is only a short version of the original article, but I hope it is sufficiently succinct. We seem to be increasingly being taken for fools in so many ways, to increase revenue. A good example is dishwashing liquid and bubbles. The bubbles actually do nothing, they are simply air trapped in a film of water, but we are encouraged to squirt the liquid in, make more bubbles, and in so doing use much more than we actually need. In fact only a few drops are needed to reduce the surface tension of the water in order to effectively clean the plates etc, and using warm or hot water is better still, but there we are, misled in order to simply sell more product!
Best regards, Ken
