Julie is Gone!
Born 1950, from Arlington TX, United States
Julie succumbed on March 11th to the cancer that made her last days full of misery. My hope is that such a terrible ending made her soul stronger. It does not seem right that too much sun on her toe resulted in the melanoma that spread and killed her.
Her life had a huge impact on so many people. There are over 5000 individual authors who registered and published more than 20000 stories on StoryStar. She improved the lives of each of those authors, as well as the lives of the untold number of anonymous readers who visited just to read stories without registering.
Julie put her heart and soul, not to mention pocketbook, into creating and operating StoryStar. She confided in me that it took her more than a few years just to get the website created before she launched it back in 2010. Since then, she spent part of every day reading, commenting on, evaluating and rewarding top stories with the Story of the Day awards.
Take a moment to stop and think about that. What have you done every day for fifteen years? She did all of this not for profit or personal gain, but for the love of literature. She wanted to create a space where aspiring writers could have their stories published and where anyone could immerse themselves for a few minutes each day in a realm of imagination.
As one of those aspiring authors, I will be forever grateful to Julie for giving so wholeheartedly of her time so that I could blossom. Her inspiration to create a haven for all of us, along with her dedication to the idea of StoryStar will never be forgotten. Her life touched so many others in a very positive way and will continue to do so as StoryStar lives on in her memory.

03/13/2026I'm very grateful for Julie and the work that she did for all of us. I have enjoyed reading stories, and for the opportunity to get "know" certain authors here through their work.
I came across this site a few years ago, and I am so glad that I did! Julie gave all us the chance to do the scary thing of letting others see our work. What I'm going to say next is perhaps overused, but I don't how else to express it: She made such a difference.

I can't tell you how sad I am. To know she gave her life to help us authors to be published . We will miss her but we will carry on the website. Still writing stories that will impact others' lives in her honor. Please be assured of our prayers are you carry on. May God richly bless you.

03/13/2026The Quiet Heroes. My post may be longer than most...certainly the longest I have ever left on the threads. Why? Becaues there isn't enough room to tell you all about the Julie I know. Like most of us here on StoryStar, I was a person who never really thought I could any work published anywhere...and if I did, who would take the time to read any of it?
I didn't want to write "books". That isn't my forte. But I thought I could spin a yarn, tell a tale, and spout a story. But that was only my own opinion...until.... JULIE!
I submitted my first story in 2013. I forget the name of it. Julie...did not. She sent me a private email about my first story. She had commented on it on StoryStar, but something in her told her to contact me and give me more support. So she did just that, cajoling me, encouraging me, and inspiring me to write more stories.
"Kevin, you have talent. You have a knack for Short Stories. Just becasuse you are older, retired and Autistic...doesn't mean you can't nurture that talent. You are a Writer."
Nobody had ever called me a "Writer" before. Heck, when the Nuns used to grade my essays in English Class...they came back with so much red ink on them...that I thought the Nuns must have all had paper cuts. My grammar was atrocious, my handwriting- illegible- and my use of punctuation wasn't based on any knows rules of style. But sometimes the story was still good. And that is what Julie focused on.
And not just for me.
Read any of Julie's comments on any of the thousands of stories she took the time to read ...and comment on- and you will find that unique mix of brutal honesty and critique, joined with the powerful message of: "You are a Writer...and you can do better." July didn't care about your voice...she just wanted to hear it. If she thought you didn't put effort into it...she told you so. If she pointed out parts where , as a Writer, you could have made better choices, or you needed to shore up your grammatical toolbox...you would have done well to listen. I did. And I got better.
Becasue Julie didn't give idle chatter as advice. She gave concrete, brief, and accurate comments. If she said it was good enough to win StoryStar of the Day, Week, or Month...than it was. I don't know many people she managed to uplift, convince, and come to believe they were a Writer...but my guess is that number is Legion. For I am one of those number.
Julie told me I could write a hundred stories. I had written just three at that time. I told her she was "nuts." She laughed (something Julie did as naturally as breathing.)
"Kevin, three stories...three good stories. Three different stories. If you have that kind of imagination and creativity that you displayed in just three stories...you must have hundreds more to tell."
And so, I hit one hundred stories. She sent me an email...
"...so I guess 200 stories would be a good goal."
This time I lauged. But Julie did not. She believed I could write anotehr 100 stories. I did. When I wrote number 200...I sent her a box of chocolate from a Chocalotier here in town. That is when I found out she likes Dark Chocolate with Sea Salt. I sent her a box of dark chocolate samples...with sea salt when I hit 300 Stories.
She made me promise not to send her anymore chocolate. I agreed. She knew that like a lot of Writers, I did not have much disposable income. It is one of the reasons she kept the site ...FREE. She could have leveraged it into all kinds of multiple streams of income...but she did not. Why?
Because she wanted you, me, all of us...to get our Work out there. She knew that even if the story was not that good, not that well written, not that well told...it was still your story. Get it out there. Read more. Write more. Get better. Post another story. And we did. All of us. I don't have the statistics...but I would not be suprised if the number of folk who onlly published one story...and stopped - is a tny fraction of a percent.
Why?
Julie.
Julie kept us invovled, relevant, engaged. Even when she had no money to spare, she kept upgrading the platform, fixing bugs, improving systems, and keept it up and running. Even when she was dying.
Even then, she thought about us, her "literary litter of Writers" ...her children. All ofspring of her baby: StoryStar.
Just days before her final breath...she was reading our stories, emails, and comments. And thanking Denise for her seamless takeover. She knew Denise would do a wonderful job...and she has. So Thank you Denise.
Julie believed in an After Life. Her Faith was unwavering. Not just in her God, but in us. All of us. Even the pain and discomfort of progressive Cancer could stop her from caring about us. And her life long message never changed:
"You are a Writer! Yes you are! So tell your story. I will post it. You can write. I believe in you. You have something to say...so say it, and I will get it out there. I believe in you. You are unique. You are a Writer. I am so proud of you."
And she was.

I wanted to jot down something about how much I appreciated what Julie had done, but that won't be necessary now. You said it all and with such eloquence and heartfelt sincerity.

03/12/2026It was expected but still a little shocking & incredibly saddening. Julie & I exchanged e-mails for a long time & I considered her a good friend. There are tears in m eyes as I write this. I will always grieve for my wife, who was also struck down by cancer & I will also always be grieving for amulet. I'm glad she's out of pain and may she rest in peace. Now I'm crying. Thanks for letting us know even tho it's such terrible news. Martin Green

03/12/2026I joined StoryStar in 2022, and I recall my excitement at seeing some of my stories chosen as Story of the Day. Then I took a break for while, and when I returned I learned the founder was very ill. Certainly, all her efforts to make this space a reality, were not in vain. I believe each of us who is part of this platform is immensely grateful. Thank you, Julie, for leaving us this legacy. R.I.P.

03/12/2026I am not sure how old she was and did not realize it was that serious. I like this site, and though knew nothing about her am grateful that she had done so much for authors, and for other people in her life too. Missing someone is hard, I have never had a loss in that type of way before, but atleast if you miss her she made a good impact and you love her even still.

03/12/2026So sad to learn that Julie is now gone. Although I didn't join Star Story until 2024, I have come to love this place. Being able to publish both my Non-Fiction Reflective essays and my fictional stories has been a blessing. I hope and pray that Story Star continues to grow. To Denise....you are doing a great job!
God be with Julie's family and many thanks to her for creating Story Star!

03/13/2026Julie encouraged both...as long as they were short stories. That was her niche....and where she planted the seed of : "You are a Writer! See... your work is Published. " And like the rest of us, you blossomed as a Writer...so a bit of Julie lives on!
Smiles, Kevin
