He Was A Writer
Born 1947, M, from Oceanside, United StatesHe Was A Writer
Abby was just about to lock up when he appeared at the door.
“I was hoping you’d still be open,” he said as he stepped between her and the doorway. Inside the bookstore, the lights were still on.
“I was just about to close up, but you can take your time,” she told him.
“I won’t need but a minute,” he said, “as long as you have what I’m looking for.”
“And what is that?”
“The new book by Harrison Block—A Writer’s Life.”
She felt a warmth blossom in her stomach. “You a writer?” she asked.
Hesitantly, he replied, “I’m trying to be.” She felt the warmth reach her cheeks. She’d always had an affinity for writers, especially if they were as handsome as this one.
Short dark hair and green eyes, he had a jogger’s slender build and stood, she figured, more than six feet. She was only five-foot eight.
When she reached the section she wanted, Abby grabbed the book off the shelf and handed it to him. “It just came in today.”
Glancing down at the cover, he said, “That’s what they said on the TV this morning.”
Studying him as he flipped through the pages, she remarked, “You must be new in town. I’ve never seen you before.”
“Actually, I live in Weston.” That was twenty minutes away. “But I decided to take the day off to attend Block’s book signing.”
Abby was also looking forward to attending Block’s talk, which was scheduled to take place inside the town’s library.
Block’s presentation turned out to be highly entertaining. A short in stature ball of energy, he kept crisscrossing the stage of the library’s auditorium like the energizing bunny while tossing out anecdotes about his writing and career.
After getting their copies of Block’s book signed, Abby and the wannabe writer and family lawyer, Franklin Park, retreated to the nearby coffee shop.
Three hours later, they were still there.
By the time Franklin’s book was published, they were engaged. When she saw the dedication, Abby’s heart swelled even bigger than when he proposed.
To my best friend and significant other, you stood by me through all the ups and downs. Thank you!

04/15/2026I agree with Mr Platt on both points. I also thought that the story was interesting, but there sure was a lot of space between the last three sentences.
