The Galactic Shortlist
Adult, M, from Bastrop, Texas, United States
The vessel settled into a high orbit around the planet, invisible to the population on its surface. The analysis team immediately began their scans to find the critical connections.Â
With each intelligent planet they surveyed they found that significant creative connections often emanated from unnoticed hubs of activity. Influencing the world through key points of shared creative enthusiasm, then spreading amongst individuals, elevating the creative quotient worldwide. The current planet under analysis seemed to follow this pattern. The significance of this pattern cannot be understated.
The team gathered to review their findings in the main observation deck overlooking the planet. The team leader opened the discussion with a brief overview of their findings, "This planet, although physically small, with an equally small population ranging in the mere billions, has surprisingly strong intellectual centers that radiate and amplify creativity throughout the planet."
"That is surprising," stated the analyst, as they reviewed their research. "This is a relatively new civilization, under 500,000 cycles revolving around its sun. And it's still spreading creativity globally?" They hesitated, "Is your data flawed in anyway?"
"It is a bit shocking, but the numbers hold up," the team leader replied. "These hubs of global creative flow are key to the advancement and developing sophistication of the planet itself."
"Are these hubs an advanced computational construct of some kind?"
"No, nothing artificial," replied the team leader. "They seem to be started by the dominant biological creatures of the world. With some systems showing more influence than others." Looking closer at the data, the team leader seemed to be intrigued by a particular metric. "For example, this one system has surprisingly extensive worldwide influence, and was started by one biological individual."
"Can that be possible? For such a young society?" the analyst questioned, looking through their own data. "Global influence by a single individual is rare. Is the influence religious in nature? We've seen that repeatedly."
"Not religious. Purely creative in nature. The creativity IS the point." Looking more closely at the data, the team leader intoned, "This particular individual is a living conduit of the creativity by building a portal and giving the world access."
"Ah, for wealth creation. We've seen that repeatedly as well," replied the analyst, disappointed.Â
"No. No, not this time. This portal was shared with the world with nothing expected in return. Not even glory," the team leader stated while double checking the data. "Rare. Extremely rare. One would even say selfless."
"Well, you know what that means!" the analyst exuberantly retorted. "This individual has met all the criteria."
"Yes, all the criteria: sole focus on creative works of others; global access and dissemination; and to do it all selflessly."
"The shortlist!"
"Yes, the shortlist," the team leader replied. "This will only be the second one in this galaxy to make the list."
"That is a very short list."
"Yes, and this individual is associated with a single location on the planet."
"What do they call this location?"
"On this world it is called 'Oregon', with the specific cluster of biological creatures referred to as 'Florence'."
"And the individual?" asked the analyst. "What is their signifier?"
"The designation of this exceptional individual is...," the team leader looked closely at the data, then slowly pronounced the name to give it the respect and reverence it deserved.Â
"Julie D. Larson."Â
"Julie D. Larson," repeated the analyst while entering the name into the very short list from across the universe. "This individual must be honored and remembered across the stars."
"It's funny that you should say that...," the team leader replied, "...the global creative conduit she created... she called it StoryStar."
The team finished up their research of the planet, not finding any other candidates who met all the criteria. They moved on to distant galaxies with hopes of finding others worthy of the shortlist, while knowing they were fortunate to find just this one, on a small planet in the spiral arm of a minor galaxy.Â
