Freedom of Thought
By Charles E.J. Moulton

Our differences make us a puzzle and together we spell "God".
Spirit is in the open spaces where it can move and is free to develop and bloom. If you try to harness spirit too much , it feels imprisoned, so the art is to remain free inside the matrix. The structure, no matter how organized it is, has to allow for liberation and room to move. It thrives on freedom, and if it doesn't have it, it tries to find it.
The flower is not forced to grow ; it does so naturally. So should we.
The question is how a free spirit reacts when encountering constricting environments. We see it in how the African slaves were treated. They weren't allowed to speak to each other during their work, so they sang. When they were freed in 1863, it resulted in the biggest musical revolution in history : ragtime , boogie-woogie, jazz, swing, blues, rock and roll, rhythm and blues, disco. The music styles are 24 and counting.
Nazi Germany had a whole row of Jews leaving for America, literally recreating the entertainment industry. The medieval plague was said to be indirectly responsible for the Renaissance. The relief of ending the Second World War might have created the golden 1950s and the birth of rock and roll. The end of the Vietnam War might have spurred disco and the magic 1980s.
What's interesting is when people are able to be free in spite of , or maybe because of, restrictions. The spouse in an unloving marriage learns to love himself. The beaten soldier finds his inner peace by meditating during off hours. The stressed businessman goes on a Nirvana vacation and changes his life.
As Princess Leia told Grand Moff Tarkin in "Star Wars: A New Hope": "The more you tighten your grip, Tarkin, the more star systems will slip through your fingers."
In the case of William Wallace in "Braveheart, " he died to remain free. That tells us how much freedom can mean to the human spirit.
At the other end of the spectrum, we find how movie directors can get their way by letting go. Stephen Sommers asked Michelle Pfeiffer to laugh in a sad scene , and she disagreed that it might be totally inappropriate given the circumstances . Stephen told her to do it her way and started filming. Out of nowhere, Michelle did exactly what he had wanted at the moment he had suggested. Why? He suggested a change and took away all the pressure.
In any relationship, giving the other party the freedom to decide makes all the difference.
Here and now is the place where the extraordinary meets the ordinary. Where the young meet the old, where the past meets the future. Where our future selves meet our present selves. Here is where man meets woman. Where the puzzle becomes complete. Where the mystery meets the solution. Where God becomes a stranger on a bus. Where we look into a pair of pupils and realize we are looking into a version of ourselves . A counterpart with contradicting views. A mirror image.
That is where the magic of freedom begins. Where we step on a train and have no idea where it leads.
We just know one thing: the spirit of true freedom leads to God.
