Mother's Day in MN

Minnesota - the land of odd decisions. Minnesota law says that the fishing opener has to happen two weeks before Memorial Day. This means that the much anticipated weekend very often falls on Mother’s Day. Instead of adjusting that law and thereby making Mother’s Day a priority, Minnesota does something really special. It has “Take a Mom Fishing Weekend.” Moms have the opportunity to spend the day fishing for free. Hooray.

I can’t speak for all moms, but I know quite a few who have no desire to celebrate Mother’s Day with a fishing rod. Are there some out there who get a kick out of it? Sure. Of course there are. But according to what I read online, only 20% of Minnesota’s anglers are women. This means that possibly 20% of the women are (maybe) excited that the fishing opener coincides with Mother’s Day. And we should consider the possibility that even women who absolutely love fishing don’t necessarily want to do it on Mother’s Day! 

It got me thinking…what if we did something equally special for Father’s Day? Here is one of so many possibilities. Perhaps T.J. Maxx could have an annual sale! "Take a Dad Shopping." Yes, and all the dads would get a free reusable shopping bag with “T.J. Maxx” written boldly on it for his enjoyment. That would be an awesome Father’s Day, wouldn’t it? Can you just imagine families flocking across the parking lot, eager to get in the building? Can you picture the look of joy on every dad’s face as he receives his polypropylene and polyester bag? It would be an awesome, memorable day. Just like “Take a Mom Fishing Weekend”!
