Dr. Seuss's Green Eggs and Ham

Dr. Seuss's Green Eggs and Ham

When you were young and read "Green Eggs and Ham,"

Sam-I-Am wanted you to try them.

At first, you paid no attention to Sam-I-Am.

But the older you got, the more you forgot his gem.

You enter Junior High and want to be an artist.

But your friends tell you that you have no chance.

No matter how hard you try, it won't be enough even if it is your hardest.

Because in the end, no one will even spare you a single glance.

Once you enter High School, all that matters is your GPA.

You always want to go back to times where all you did was play.

There's no way back and you know it,

The future is just an endless pit.

Fear is all that comes to mind when you want to be something,

Because what if that dream is just nothing?

You want to be an athlete, an accountant, an actress,

But you'll still worry that you'll end up in a small apartment with no money on a cheap mattress.

Words that you hear from another,

Slowly get to your head.

No matter how much you try to get tougher,

You'll still feel your dreams getting shred.

Returning to your days in Kindergarten is all you desire,

When all you worried about was your missing crayon.

The next thing you know, you're studying for your SATs through all-nighters.

Though your other twenty-three crayon colors remain, the one you loved is gone.

Never choosing that path, that route, or that turn,

You'll regret that when you're old.

You'll only feel that painful heartburn,

The dreams you left behind are now cold.

Re-reading Dr. Seuss's "Green Eggs and Ham."

You'll be wishing that you tried those green eggs when you had your shot,

Wishing that you had listened to Sam-I-Am.

Finding that old path is something you already forgot.

So maybe while that path is still open,

You should follow it.

Before it becomes another idea that's unspoken,

Don't listen to them and quit.

Take your chance,

Don't let others choose for you.

Whether it's a career, hobby, or romance,

Stop letting it turn blue.

No more "What If?"

Instead, what could it be?

Head straight for that cliff,

If it makes you feel free.

So stop your cries,

And this time listen to Sam-I-Am.

Because maybe his words were something wise,

Maybe all you needed to do was to try those green eggs and ham.
