An urban landslip
Born 1948, M, from Kent - garden of England, United Kingdom
Dream about urban landslip.
I awoke from a dream a few moments ago but wish to record it, before memory fades.
In this dream a whole street of mixed terraced and detached houses in a northern English town, simply slid down a steep hill very suddenly. Although I was the observer I also seemed to be involved in some way, as hearing what sounded like a low cracking sound, I looked out of a window, from a room which was normally illuminated at night by the glow of street lights outside, but which was now plunged into darkness. The watch on my wrist told me that it was 3.22 am and the view from the window was of stationary parked cars seemingly silently moving uphill on the road outside. Together, myself and someone unknown, but obviously female, slowly walked down the heavily carpeted stairs as though our feet touched nothing, a weird experience in itself, and when in the hall below opened the front door. What faced us was a wall of earth and rubble slowly passing upwards on the hill whilst the house stood stationary with no apparent movement. I was pulled by my shadowy companion to the back door of the house, down a narrow passageway with three deep steps leading down past a kitchen, where upon the wall copper pans were jangling at crazy angles, and a fridge, its door wide open, stood in the center of the room. Reaching the back door we opened it to see across a valley, the early glimmer of light just appearing on the horizon, but there was nothing but a rocky chasm directly outside the door. if there had once been a garden or the backs of other houses, they were now gone, no longer existent. My view then changed, we were now longer in the house but seemingly gazing down from a height, I have no idea what was supporting us, we seemed to be hovering. The woman, her face obscured by a flapping cloth of some description, perhaps a dark red scarf, was standing to my right and holding a tremendously long pole or shaft above her head, I seemed to vaguely wonder at her amazing strength in doing this, but my attention was mostly on the scene below. This seemed to be of various rectangles and squares haphazardly assembled upon one another, and laying at the bottom of a long earthy chute. The shadows of many upright poles alongside the clay like chute, were cast across in a blaze of sunlight, forming attractive patterns, whilst below the rectangles, which I took to be piles of buildings, were now being surrounded by flowing water as several rivers converged. At the very top of the chute, a crane, alongside two rusting storage containers, slowly moved its jib to the left as the tip of the jib rose up. A dog barked, it was the only sound.
At this point I woke up, confused as to where I was and concerned for both the mystery woman and the dog. It seemed to me that I had witnessed and somehow survived an epic disaster, and I had a deep feeling of being cast alone in the world.
I am writing this just minutes after waking up, but the vividness of the ‘experience’ is still with me. I live in an area of many such urban hills, with old and substantial houses just as described, and now wonder if I have merely subconsciously remembered an old story of an actual disaster somewhere, or, as I am currently looking at buying a house in a city of many hills, have had a warning premonition.
Who knows?
I will now only search for a house in a flat and dry area!
