Dazed

He had no idea how he got here. Where even was here? He blinked hard in the glare of the harsh lights overhead. He rolled onto his side, wincing in pain. He stared out in confusion. His family and friends were sitting there, concern on their faces.

They were sitting all in a line. Were they gathered at his hospital bedside? Perhaps they were sitting in a church pew? Maybe he witnessing his own funeral? What was going on? His head hurt. He tasted blood in his mouth. He tried to wipe his mouth with the back of his hand, but his limbs felt weighted down and like they belonged to somebody else.

He heard a loud voice calling out. One, two, three…

He pushed himself to his feet, and on shaky legs, looked around, still puzzled by his surroundings. He stared out at the crowd. There must have been hundreds of people out there, a sea of faces, all looking at him. What was happening? Who were all these people and why were they all staring at him? Was he dreaming? The world did have an unreal dreamlike quality to it. Perhaps it was the bright floodlights beaming down from above.

He tried to make sense of his strange surroundings but couldn’t even remember what day it was. There was a man standing in front of him. He wore a white shirt and bow-tie, and was staring intently at him. He was about to ask the man where he was and why he was here, when the man spoke.

Four, five, six… the man continued.

He looked down at his gloved hands, and everything came flooding back. The boxing match, the title fight, his shot at the big-time, the months and months of training for this night. He recalled the first-round knock-down. He winced as he remembered the blow that had put him down. He shook his head in an attempt to clear the fog in his mind.

Seven, eight. The referee continued.

He nodded, waving his hands, telling the referee he was okay. The referee nodded, moving aside. He raised his gloves and stepped towards his opponent.

Aloha CPlatt,

Brilliiant. Like some of the others on the thread, I got my bell rung (as we say sometime on this side of the pond). And much like the character in your story...I lost a few moments. Aloha CPlatt,

Brilliiant. Like some of the others on the thread, I got my bell rung (as we say sometime on this side of the pond). And much like the character in your story...I lost a few moments. But the weird thing was this: For about a week or so, I could describe chocolate, I could tell you the name of the Chocolate Companies (Nestle's and Hershey's), I could tell you all about the color of the boxes their chocolate poweder came in. But I could not, for the life of me, say the word: "Chocolate."
My brothers and sisters thought it was hilarous watching me try and seaerch out the word...but couldn't find it. You could hand me a piece of milk chocolate...and I couldn't call it by name.
Luckily, that went away over a week or so. But still don't remember going down. LOL

Lovely, just lovely.
Smiles, Kevin

Thanks a lot for the points, Kevin. Appreciate the support, my friend. Hope you're doing well. Are you watching the World Cup? Most people over here are into football (soccer).

Hey CPlatt,
The points are used to "pay" for things like Pinning a Story to put on the top of the Queue ...and not sure what else. I try to give them away so that folks can "pin" their favorite story they wrote and get more readers.

Hey CPlatt,
The points are used to "pay" for things like Pinning a Story to put on the top of the Queue ...and not sure what else. I try to give them away so that folks can "pin" their favorite story they wrote and get more readers.

And yes, that was the problem. I just couldn't for the life of me, say the word "chocolate." I could describe the candy wrappers, the packaging, even tell you the name of the Town and Company (Hersheys Candy Company, in Hershey Pennsylvania) but no way could I say: "Hersheys Chocolate Bar." Or even: "Do you want some hot chocolate?" I would say: "Do you want heated milk with that stuff in it?" LOL. But it went away.

Smiles, Kevin

Kevin, that's fascinating. So you just couldn't say the actual word? The brain is a complex thing isn't it. By the way, i had an alert saying you'd sent me some credits on here. How does that all work? I'm a bit of a technophobe to be honest. Thanks... Read More

A cool little story. I had a head injury when I was 12 or 13. Most of the Day is a blank.
Congratulations on Short Story Star of the Day.
