The Red Shoe Diaries - After the Fire
Born 1978, F, from Fort Worth, Texas, United States
Author's Note: This story was inspired by the film The Red Shoe Diaries. For those familiar with the movie, it reimagines the inner world of Thomas (portrayed by Billy Wirth) after learning of Alex’s death (portrayed by Brigette Bako). It is an exploration of grief, passion, and the silence that follows desire.

I wanted to know her—to know everything about her.
She was different.
Intense. Beautiful. Vulnerable.
One thing kept echoing in my mind. She had once told me that she thought if I didn't know her, I couldn't control her.
But it was never about control.
It was about passion.
A passion she awakened in me, and one I awakened in her. A passion she ultimately decided she no longer wanted to explore.
As I sit here in my apartment, I've come to realize that perhaps she only wanted to step outside of herself for a little while. To escape. To feel something different.
I was never meant to be anything more than a passionate moment in her life.
She wanted to end it.
I didn't.
I wanted it to continue—to see where it might lead, to discover how far it could go.
Now she's dead.
She took her own life.
The only explanation I can find is that everything became too intense. Too complicated. She wanted to marry him—Jake.
Yet I couldn't, and wouldn't, let her go.
So she made a choice.
She chose to remove herself from this life, leaving two men behind with broken hearts.
I don't know what to do now.
I feel as though I'm merely drifting through the days.
Every day, I find myself looking for her. Perhaps some foolish part of me still hopes she's alive—that what I was told was a lie.
But another part of me knows the truth.
She's gone.
It wasn't a lie.
And somehow, I'm supposed to move on.
Yet I still find myself searching for her.
Then I realize something.
It's not her I'm searching for anymore.
I'm searching for someone like her.
Someone who can ignite that deep, fiery passion lying dormant within my heart. Someone who can make me feel alive the way she did.
I don't know if I'll ever find that again.
Why, Alex?
Why did you leave me?
That night in the hotel room, I begged you not to leave me.
And you left anyway.
Was I too much?
Was what we had too much?
Maybe one day I'll find the answer.
Until then, I continue searching—not for Alex, but for the passion she awakened in me and took with her when she left.

08/02/2026If you really want to see it - let me warn you. It is risque. That said, after watching the movie, the idea of writing what the character - Thomas might have been feeling intrigue me.
