Rare Collector
Born 1983, M, from Atlanta,Texas, United StatesHow could you leave me like this?" Boze whispered, tears filling his eyes. "You were like a father to me."
Footsteps echoed behind him.
A figure wearing a purple paenula, a black face mask with glowing white eyes, and carrying a black briefcase slowly approached.
"Hello, my friend," the stranger said.
Still on his knees, Boze turned around.
"Who are you? What... are you?" he asked, his voice trembling.
"I am a rare collector," the stranger replied calmly.
"I don't know what you're trying to sell me, but I'm not interested."
The stranger chuckled.
"I'm not here to sell you anything. I'm here to make you a deal."
"What kind of deal?" Boze asked cautiously.
The stranger set the briefcase on the ground and opened it. Inside were counterfeit Magic cards unlike any Boze had ever seen.
"Play me in a Shadow Game," the stranger said. "If you win, I will restore your friend's soul... and these rare cards will be yours."
Boze's eyes widened.
"And if you win?" he asked.
The stranger's glowing eyes narrowed.
"Then I take your deck."
Boze stared at the cards. The offer sounded too good to be true, but if there was even the slightest chance he could bring Howard back, it was worth considering. The rare cards would also give him a better chance of defeating Jayden and Hailey.
After a long silence, Boze rose to his feet and looked the stranger in the eyes.
"You have a deal."
A sinister smile spread beneath the stranger's mask.
"Excellent," he said. "Let the Shadow Game begin”.
As Boze accepts the mysterious stranger's offer, black shadows spread across the cemetery. Howard's grave disappears beneath a stone dueling arena illuminated by ghostly blue flames.
Boze summons several powerful monsters and quickly overwhelms the stranger.
Within a few turns, the stranger's Life Points fall to 2,000 while Boze still has 7,600.
"You've already lost," Boze says.
The stranger smiles.
"No... you've simply shown me how you duel.”
The stranger summons Collector of Forgotten Souls, a monster that becomes stronger whenever a card is sent to the Graveyard.
He follows it with the Field Spell Museum of Shadows, allowing him to recover one monster every turn.
Boze destroys the monsters again and again, but they always return stronger than before.
His Life Points fall to 5,300, then 3,900, then 2,100.
Boze draws exactly what he needs.
"This ends now!"
He summons his ace monster and declares a direct attack.
The stranger nods.
"You fought well."
He flips over his final Trap Card with the following effects: your opponent controls more monsters than you and declares a winning attack, destroy every monster on the field. Then Special Summon Curator of Endless Night, whose Attack equals the combined original Attack of every destroyed monster.
Boze's entire field vanishes into black smoke.
A towering creature emerges from the shadows with 10,500 ATK.
The stranger points forward.
"Attack."
The enormous monster strikes.
Boze's Life Points drop from 2,100 to 0.
The Shadow Game ends.
Boze falls to one knee, exhausted.
The mysterious stranger approaches and quietly holds out his hand.
"Our bargain."
Boze reluctantly hands over his deck.
The mysterious stranger took Boze's deck, left the suitcase filled with counterfeit cards, and walked off.
Emma and Data-G-01 walked through the quiet countryside, continuing their search for the three legendary Magic cards: Asterion, Nyxara, and Tharos.
Suddenly, Data-G-01 stopped.
His optical sensors flashed as he scanned the surrounding area.
"I am detecting a highly unusual magical anomaly," he said. "Its energy signature is unstable. We should investigate."
Emma nodded.
The two followed the strange energy until they arrived at an old cemetery.
There they found Boze sitting on the ground, his face buried in his hands as he cried. Beside him lay an open black briefcase filled with dozens of counterfeit Magic cards unlike any Emma had ever seen.
Data-G-01 knelt beside the briefcase and extended a scanner from his arm.
"Analyzing..."
Moments later, a holographic display appeared.
"Analysis complete. The magical residue and energy patterns match historical records of a being known only as the Rare Collector.”
Emma reached into the briefcase and carefully picked up one of the counterfeit cards. She clenched both fists and shut her eyes tightly.
The magical necklace around her neck began glowing with brilliant golden light.
When it faded, the six-year-old girl was gone. Standing in her place was a confident teenage girl, her expression calm and determined. Although she possessed extraordinary wisdom and knowledge beyond her years because of the enchanted necklace, her transformed body now reflected the strength needed to confront the growing danger.
The power Emma had gained in her teenage form made tracking magical energy effortless.
She closed her eyes for a moment, allowing the enchanted necklace to guide her. A trail of dark energy appeared before her, leading deep into the forest.
Moments later, she caught sight of the mysterious stranger walking along an abandoned path, his purple paenula flowing in the wind and his black mask concealing everything except his glowing white eyes.
Hold it right there, you cheat!" Emma shouted.
The stranger stopped but did not turn around.
"I don't have time for the likes of you," he replied coldly.
Emma stepped forward without hesitation.
"I know exactly who you are. You're the Rare Collector."
For the first time, the stranger turned around with interest.
Most people have never heard that title," he said. "How do you know it?"
"I know enough."
"You cheated Boze out of his deck, and I'm here to win it back."
The stranger tilted his head.
"And how do you intend to do that?"
"I challenge you to a Shadow Game."
The stranger remained silent.
"If I win," Emma continued, "you return every card you took from Boze."
"And if you lose?" the stranger asked.
Emma held up her own deck.
"You get my entire deck."
The Stranger’s glowing eyes narrowed.
He could sense immense magical power flowing from Emma's necklace, and he recognized that her deck was no ordinary collection.
A slow smile spread beneath his mask.
"What a fascinating offer," he said. "A deck infused with ancient magic... it would make a magnificent addition to my collection.”
“It's a deal,” said the stranger.
The duel opens aggressively. The stranger tries to unsettle her with rare, high-impact summons designed to overwhelm early. But Emma doesn’t rush to respond. Instead, she studies how each card connects, noticing something subtle—his deck is powerful, but it depends heavily on drawing specific “paired” cards to unlock their full effects.
Emma shifts the duel into control mode. She doesn’t chase damage; she disrupts timing. Each turn, she forces awkward trades, negates key setups, and quietly removes the stranger’s ability to assemble his combos. The stranger grows more confident anyway, believing his rarest card will turn the tide.
Midway through the duel, he finally plays it: a legendary card said to be unique, rumored to “adapt” to any field, but Emma has already prepared for it. She reveals a counter-strategy built not to destroy the card directly, but to isolate it, stripping away the conditions it needs to evolve.
Turn by turn, the legendary card loses its advantage, unable to scale or stabilize. The stranger becomes increasingly desperate, burning resources from his prized collection just to stay in the game.
In the final moment, Emma sets a simple trap—one clean combination that punishes overcommitment. The stranger takes the bait, overextends to protect his signature card, and leaves himself exposed.
Emma ends the duel with a decisive counter, not flashy, but precise. The stranger’s board collapses, and his legendary card is rendered useless on the field.
As silence falls, Emma doesn’t celebrate. She simply gathers her cards, having proven that rarity means little without control, timing, and understanding.
The Stranger stepped forward as the last traces of the duel still lingered in the air, like echoes refusing to fade. He placed Boze’s deck into Emma’s hands.
“As part of the Rare Collector by-laws,” he said calmly, “I must give you my rarest magic card in my deck.”
From his palm, he revealed a single card. It didn’t glow or pulse like the others. It felt different—quiet, worn, almost humble for something labeled “rare.” He placed it into Emma’s hand with deliberate care.
Then he turned and walked away, disappearing into the shadows without another word.
Emma stood still for a moment, then she gently placed Boze’s deck back into his hands.
“I don’t understand,” Boze said.
Emma looked up at him, steady and sincere.
“People use the Shadow Games for good and evil,” she said, “but the true meaning behind the game is the friendships that are formed.”
She held out her hand.
Boze glanced around, almost instinctively checking if anyone was watching him drop his guard. Then he exhaled, something in him softening.
“You are alright, kid,” he said.
Instead of shaking her hand, he pulled her into a brief, unexpected hug.
Boze stepped back, gave a small nod, and turned away.
The necklace around Emma’s neck began to glow.
At first it was faint. Then it grew warmer, brighter, like it was responding to something it had been waiting for.
Emma looked down just as the light wrapped around her. The world shifted. When it settled again, she was small. Six years old.
She blinked, steadying herself, then looked down at the necklace as its glow faded into a quiet pulse.
In her hand, the Stranger’s rare card remained—unchanged, real.
She looked up toward Boze’s disappearing figure.
He didn’t look back.
Emma watched him go, wondering if he had truly learned the lesson…or if the Shadow Games only change people in ways you can’t see until much later.
