Harlequin

Hailey and Jay continued their search for the remaining mysterious magical cards, Asterion and Tharos. Unaware of the danger ahead, they didn't realize that Mustissac and his gang of Card Hunters had devised a plan to separate them. If successful, they intended to capture Hailey and transform her into one of Mustissac's mind-controlled Card Hunter servants.

Several Card Hunters disguised themselves as street musicians and began performing lively music along the sidewalk. Jay stopped to listen to the unexpected concert while Hailey continued walking ahead, unaware that she had become separated from him.

"Excellent," Mustissac said with a sinister smile as he watched a large viewscreen from the head of a long dining table in his hidden headquarters. "Everything is going according to plan.”

A Card Hunter known as Harlequin suddenly stepped in front of Hailey. Dressed in a colorful jester's costume, he bowed dramatically before bursting into a fit of silly laughter.

"I have one of the cards you seek," Harlequin said with a grin.

Hailey turned around and realized Jay was nowhere in sight.

"We must hurry! The other Card Hunters know where it is!" Harlequin exclaimed, performing a somersault before landing gracefully. "Follow me!"

Although suspicious, Hailey knew she couldn't ignore the chance to recover one of the legendary cards. She cautiously followed Harlequin to a large striped tent at the edge of the street. Hidden surveillance cameras tracked her every movement as she stepped inside.

The entrance flap closed behind her.

Harlequin's cheerful expression twisted into a wicked smile.

"Now, my beautiful Hailey," he said with another playful giggle, "it's time for a Shadow Game! If I win, my master will claim your mind!"

Hailey immediately realized she had fallen into Mustissac's trap.

She closed her eyes.

The magical bracelet on her wrist began glowing with brilliant golden light. A sparkling deck of enchanted cards materialized in her hands as magical energy filled the tent.

"I won't become anyone's servant," Hailey said confidently as she opened her eyes.

Harlequin laughed and drew his own deck.

"Hee-hee-hee! Then let the games begin!"

Darkness swept through the tent as the Shadow Game activated. The canvas walls disappeared, replaced by a vast arena floating beneath a storm-filled sky. Rings of purple fire surrounded the dueling field while ghostly spectators cheered from the shadows.

Purple lightning crackled across the Shadow Arena as Hailey and Harlequin faced one another. Their Life Point counters glowed above the battlefield.

Hailey: 4000 Life Points

Harlequin twirled his deck with a theatrical flourish and laughed.

"Hee-hee-hee! Prepare yourself, Hailey! My tricks always end with the audience in tears!"

"I won't lose," Hailey replied calmly. "I'm ending this Shadow Game”

"Then I'll take the first turn!"

Harlequin drew a card.

I summon Jester Imp in attack mode!" A small goblin dressed as a clown leaped onto the field, juggling glowing knives.

"I set two cards face down and end my turn!"

Hailey drew her card.

"I summon Guardian Lion in defense mode!"

A magnificent lion clad in silver armor appeared before her, its shield gleaming with magical energy.

"I also set one card."

Harlequin laughed and pointed dramatically.

"Attack, Jester Imp! Tumbling Strike!"

The creature charged forward, but as it attacked, Hailey smiled.

"I activate my Trap Card—Shield of Dawn!”

A wall of golden light rose in front of Guardian Lion, stopping the attack completely.

"My turn!" Hailey declared.

She drew another card.

"I summon Sky Falcon Mage!"

A winged magician soared above the battlefield, gathering wind around its staff.

"Sky Falcon Mage, attack Jester Imp with Gale Burst!"

A whirlwind blasted across the arena, destroying Jester Imp.

Harlequin stumbled backward.

"My poor little performer!"

His Life Points fell to 3500.

Hee-hee... the show's not over!"

On his next turn, Harlequin summoned Laughing Puppet, a sinister marionette whose strings wrapped around Guardian Lion, preventing it from attacking.

"Now attack!"

The puppet lunged, lowering Hailey's Life Points to 3300.

Harlequin laughed wildly.

"Soon your mind will belong to Master Mustissac!"

Hailey gripped the glowing bracelet on her wrist.

"Never."

She drew her next card, and the bracelet shone brighter than ever.

I've been waiting for this."

She held the card high.

"I summon Celestial Phoenix!"

A magnificent phoenix of gold and crimson fire erupted into the sky, filling the arena with radiant light.

Harlequin shielded his eyes.

"That monster...!"

"Celestial Phoenix, destroy Laughing Puppet with Solar Flame!"

The phoenix released a blazing beam that reduced the puppet to sparkling ash.

Harlequin's Life Points dropped to 2200.

Hailey wasn't finished.

"I activate the Spell Card Courage of the Heart, allowing Celestial Phoenix to attack once more!"

The phoenix circled high above before diving toward Harlequin.

"Final Blaze!"

A pillar of golden fire engulfed the battlefield.

Harlequin cried out as his Life Points rapidly fell.

2200... 1500... 800... 0!

Harlequin stood frozen. The smile vanished from his face, and his giggling stopped as he realized he had failed his master—a failure that always carried severe consequences.

"You incompetent fool!" Mustissac shouted as he watched Hailey defeat Harlequin in the duel.

Mustissac reached down and picked up his golden magical staff, the Gildebane, which lay beside him. He tapped it against the floor.

Harlequin collapsed instantly, his body writhing in violent convulsions.

Mustissac tapped the floor again, and the convulsions ceased. A cruel smile spread across his face. The sight of Harlequin suffering filled him with pleasure.

He struck the floor once more.

Harlequin screamed as another wave of convulsions tore through his body.

Mustissac laughed.

Finally, he tapped the Gildebane one last time. Harlequin gasped for breath as his soul was ripped from his body and banished to the Umbral Realm. His body went limp.

Silence filled the tent.

Hailey noticed one of the surveillance cameras watching everything.

She closed her eyes, and the bracelet on her wrist began to glow. Brilliant white light flooded the inside of the tent. Standing within the light, Hailey became nothing more than a dark silhouette as she summoned her shadow powers.

"Mustissac," she declared, "I know you're watching. Let this be your warning. Nothing you send will stop us. And when we finally face each other in a Shadow Game, victory will be ours."

Mustissac simply laughed as he watched through the viewing screen.

The light faded.

The magical energy drained from Hailey's body. Exhausted from the Shadow Game and the power she had unleashed, her magic slowly disappeared, and she transformed back into an ordinary human until she could recover.

Her eyes fell upon Harlequin's lifeless body.

A wave of nausea hit her.

Covering her mouth, she rushed outside and found a patch of bushes, where she dropped to her knees and vomited.

Are you okay?" Jay asked gently as he found Hailey on her knees.

Hailey wiped her mouth and nodded weakly.

"I'll be fine," she whispered.

Later, the two walked quietly along the road toward the command center.

Every so often, Jay glanced at Hailey, unable to hide how much he admired her. He had developed feelings for her but had never found the courage to say anything.

As Hailey's magic slowly began returning, she smiled.

"You have a crush on me, don't you?" she asked playfully.

Jay's face turned bright red.

"I... I think you're beautiful," he admitted. "And... I kind of like you."

Hailey smiled warmly.

"I kind of like you too.”

Suddenly, a strange magical energy surrounded them, gently changing the direction they were walking. It guided them through the streets until they found themselves standing before an elegant Italian restaurant.

Jay stared at the entrance.

"Why did my powers lead me here?" he muttered. "I don't have enough money for this."

At that moment, he felt what seemed like an invisible hand slip something into his pocket.

Curious, he reached inside.

Several twenty-dollar bills.

He blinked in disbelief.

Together they entered the restaurant.

As they shared plates of pasta while musicians performed romantic love songs nearby, Hailey realized something.

On Earth, moments like this only happened in fairy tales.

But the love slowly growing in her heart for Jay was completely real.
