The Price of Moonfire
Born 1994, M, from Tokyo, JapanWhen the second moon bled silver across the sky, every lie spoken in the kingdom became visible as black smoke.
Liora had lived by deception for years. She was a thief who stole enchanted relics from forgotten temples, selling them to nobles who pretended they wanted them for history instead of power.
Tonight, however, no smoke escaped her lips.
Because the greatest lie she had ever told was not spoken.
It was hidden in her blood.
As she crossed the ancient bridge toward the ruined citadel, the stones awakened beneath her feet. Golden runes shimmered, recognizing a queen long believed dead.
"No," Liora whispered.
The bridge ignored her denial.
Inside the citadel waited a dragon, old enough to remember when humans still feared the stars. His scales reflected galaxies instead of fire.
"You've come home," he rumbled.
"I came for the crown."
"The crown was never the treasure."
He lowered his massive head until one glowing eye filled her vision.
"You are."
Memories crashed into her mind.
A kingdom consumed by shadow.
A mother placing a newborn inside a wooden basket.
A dragon swearing an impossible oath.
Protect the child until she chooses the throne... or destroys it.
The dragon stepped aside.
On a pedestal rested the Moonfire Crown, untouched by time.
Liora reached for it.
The moment her fingers brushed the silver, the castle awoke. Thousands of ghostly knights knelt. Bells rang through empty towers. Flowers bloomed from cracked stone.
The crown offered unlimited power.
It demanded one payment.
Every happy memory she possessed.
She could rule forever.
She would never remember why she wanted to.
Liora closed her eyes, thinking of warm bread shared with strangers, rain-soaked laughter, stolen kisses beneath autumn trees, and the simple joy of watching sunrise after surviving another impossible night.
Those moments had made her human.
Power alone never could.
She withdrew her hand.
"I choose to remember."
The castle fell silent.
The crown shattered into moonlight, scattering across the night sky as a thousand new stars.
The dragon smiled, a rare and terrible thing.
"The true queen was never the one who wore the crown."
He bowed.
"It was the one who refused it."
