Part One: The Night the Gamma Sky Fell
The first warm days of summer had finally settled over the city of Alder's Point.
Children rode bicycles until the streetlights flickered awake. Food trucks filled the parks with the scent of roasted corn and barbecue. Musicians gathered on sidewalks while the evening air carried laughter farther than the wind itself.
Chance Wallenda wasn't paying attention to any of it.
Twenty-four years old, endlessly curious, and known for accidentally breaking expensive laboratory equipment in surprisingly creative ways, Chance was one of the newest research assistants at the Horizon Science Center.
He wasn't a genius because he knew every answer.
He was a genius because he refused to stop asking questions.
"Chance," called Dr. Miriam Ellsworth from across the laboratory. "Please tell me you labeled the isotope containers."
Chance looked toward a stack of identical silver cylinders.
"...Eventually?"
Dr. Ellsworth sighed.
"You've had six hours."
"I was building a coffee machine."
"...We already own three."
"I improved one."
"It exploded."
"It improved dramatically."
She rubbed her forehead.
"You are impossible."
"And yet strangely employable."
"You keep discovering things by accident."
"History loves accidents."
"History also loves paperwork."
The Horizon Science Center stood atop a cliff overlooking the ocean.
Tonight was unlike any other.
Months of preparation had led to the unveiling of Project Helios—a revolutionary gamma-energy stabilization reactor designed to create limitless clean power.
Scientists from around the country crowded the observation decks.
Government officials attended.
Journalists prepared cameras.
Everything had to be perfect.
Which meant Chance immediately spilled coffee across his own notes.
"...I meant to do that."
"No, you didn't," said his best friend, technician Lucas Moreno.
"It adds personality."
"It adds stains."
Despite his clumsy reputation, everyone liked Chance.
He laughed at himself before anyone else could.
He helped interns without expecting credit.
He volunteered for dangerous maintenance jobs simply because nobody else wanted them.
He even remembered everyone's birthday.
Mostly.
Except his own.
As darkness settled across the coast, enormous containment towers awakened.
Blue rings of light climbed upward.
The Helios Reactor hummed beneath the facility.
Thousands gathered outside behind security barriers.
News helicopters circled overhead.
Dr. Ellsworth addressed the audience.
"Tonight," she announced, "humanity takes one step closer toward limitless energy."
Applause echoed.
Chance leaned against a control console.
"Pretty exciting."
Lucas grinned.
"You realize this is history."
"I just hope history doesn't explode."
Far above...
Storm clouds gathered.
Except they weren't weather.
Astronomers had reported strange cosmic radiation entering Earth's atmosphere only hours earlier.
No one connected it to Project Helios.
Not yet.
Deep beneath the laboratory...
The reactor activated.
One percent.
Five.
Ten.
Twenty.
Energy spiraled inside magnetic containment rings.
Everything remained stable.
Scientists smiled.
Chance smiled.
Dr. Ellsworth relaxed.
Then—
Warning.
A tiny red light blinked.
Chance frowned.
"Huh."
Lucas looked over.
"What?"
"Pressure fluctuation."
"How much?"
"...Enough that I don't like it."
The reactor surged.
Power readings doubled.
Then tripled.
Computer screens flashed.
Containment Field Variance.
Gamma Oscillation Increasing.
Unknown Energy Signature Detected.
"What does unknown mean?" Chance asked.
"No idea," replied Lucas.
"I hate those words."
Outside...
The sky changed color.
Purple streaks rippled through the stars.
The ocean reflected emerald light.
Birds scattered.
Dogs barked.
Every electronic device within miles flickered.
People pointed upward.
"What is that?"
Inside the reactor chamber...
Alarms screamed.
"Containment breach!" shouted a scientist.
Emergency doors slammed shut.
Massive steel barriers descended.
The reactor no longer glowed blue.
It glowed green.
A brilliant, impossible green.
Chance stared.
"That isn't supposed to happen."
Dr. Ellsworth shouted across the room.
"Manual override!"
"The computer isn't responding!"
"Chance!"
"I'm on it!"
He sprinted through flashing corridors.
Emergency lights bathed everything in crimson.
The reactor chamber lay ahead.
Its massive circular doors remained partially open.
Inside...
Gamma energy twisted like a living tornado.
Electric arcs danced across the room.
Metal warped.
Glass melted.
Gravity itself seemed uncertain.
Lucas grabbed Chance's arm.
"Don't go in there!"
"If the stabilizers fail—"
"They're already failing!"
"We'll all be vaporized!"
Chance looked toward the control platform.
One emergency lever.
One manual shutdown.
Forty meters away.
"No pressure."
Lucas stared.
"You cannot be serious."
Chance smiled nervously.
"I usually panic later."
He ran.
Every step became harder.
The energy pushed against him like a hurricane.
The room vibrated.
Machines exploded.
Ceiling panels crashed down.
The reactor roared louder than thunder.
Chance reached the platform.
He grabbed the shutdown lever.
It wouldn't move.
"Oh, come on!"
He pulled harder.
Nothing.
Again.
Nothing.
The reactor screamed.
Above the building...
The strange cosmic storm finally arrived.
A column of emerald light struck directly into the Helios Reactor.
Reality itself seemed to crack.
Every window shattered.
Every light burst.
Every alarm died.
Silence.
For one impossible second...
There was only green.
Then—
Everything exploded.
Not with fire.
With energy.
Gamma radiation surged through the chamber in a massive wave.
Chance never had time to run.
The blast swallowed him whole.
Emerald lightning wrapped around his body.
His skeleton briefly glowed through his skin.
His heartbeat became louder than the collapsing laboratory.
Every cell inside him changed.
Not dying.
Transforming.
Outside...
A shockwave burst into the night sky.
People were knocked off their feet.
Cars rolled backward.
Streetlights shattered.
The clouds formed a gigantic emerald ring stretching across the horizon.
News helicopters barely escaped.
Then...
Darkness.
Hours later...
Emergency crews searched through the ruins.
Firefighters dug through twisted steel.
Rescue drones scanned the rubble.
No survivors had been found inside the reactor chamber.
Dr. Ellsworth stood silently beside the wreckage.
Lucas refused to leave.
"He can't be gone."
Nobody answered.
Far beneath the destroyed laboratory...
Hidden inside fractured concrete...
A hand moved.
Slowly.
Its skin glowed faintly green beneath layers of dust.
Bones cracked.
Muscles shifted.
Eyes opened.
Not brown anymore.
Brilliant emerald.
Chance inhaled sharply.
"What..."
His voice echoed strangely.
"...happened...to me?"
He struggled to sit.
Every movement felt unnaturally powerful.
Steel beams bent beneath his fingers without effort.
Chunks of concrete crumbled like dry bread.
His heartbeat thundered through the underground ruins.
He looked at his trembling hands.
Green veins pulsed beneath his skin before fading again.
"No..."
A distant growl echoed—not from the ruins, but from somewhere deep inside him.
Chance froze.
The sound came again.
It wasn't an animal.
It wasn't a machine.
It felt...like another side of himself awakening.
A side fueled by impossible strength.
A side born from gamma fire.
And somewhere in the darkness, with a nervous laugh despite everything, Chance whispered the only name that came to mind.
"If I'm becoming...something else..."
He looked at his glowing reflection in a shard of broken glass.
"...then maybe..."
A faint grin crossed his face.
"...I'll call this side of me...Hulk the Metahuman."
Above him, unseen in the night, unknown figures watched the ruined science center from the shadows.
One of them smiled.
"The gamma subject survived."
Another replied coldly,
"Excellent."
"Phase Two begins."
Part Two: The Giant Within
The underground ruins were silent.
Water dripped through cracked concrete.
Twisted steel groaned as the damaged Horizon Science Center settled into its new, broken shape. Dust floated through narrow beams of moonlight that slipped between shattered support columns.
Chance Wallenda leaned against a slab of broken wall, still trying to make sense of what had happened.
His clothes were torn.
His hands shook.
His heartbeat sounded unusually loud, as though a drum were beating somewhere inside his chest.
"...I'm alive."
He looked at his palms.
The faint green glow had disappeared.
"So...maybe I'm okay?"
As if answering him, his stomach growled.
"Lunch would've been nice."
Despite everything, Chance laughed at himself.
"Survive a giant energy explosion..."
Another growl.
"...and I'm worried about food."
He pushed himself to his feet.
The moment he stood—
Crunch.
The concrete beneath him cracked.
Chance blinked.
"I didn't step that hard."
He took another step.
More cracks spread across the floor.
"...Okay..."
He looked around.
"Maybe I did."
Several tons of collapsed steel blocked the nearest tunnel.
Normally, moving it would've required heavy construction equipment.
Chance sighed.
"Guess I need another way."
He placed both hands against one beam.
"Maybe I can wiggle this."
He pushed gently.
The beam launched across the room like a toy, smashing through another wall before embedding itself deep into solid concrete.
Silence.
Chance stared.
"...Oops."
He walked toward the opening.
The air smelled different now.
Sharper.
Cleaner.
He could distinguish seawater from engine oil.
Fresh-cut grass from burning electrical wires.
He even smelled someone's pizza several city blocks away.
"...Either I'm starving..."
He sniffed again.
"...or that's pepperoni."
Outside the ruined laboratory, emergency crews continued their search.
Police lights painted the coastline in flashes of red and blue.
Television reporters spoke quietly into cameras.
Lucas Moreno refused to leave.
"He has to be here somewhere."
A firefighter shook his head.
"We've searched every accessible level."
Lucas looked toward the wreckage.
"I know Chance."
"He survives impossible things."
Deep beneath them...
Chance heard every word.
His eyes widened.
"I can hear Lucas?"
He looked upward.
"That's...not possible."
He climbed another pile of debris.
His fingers dug into concrete as though it were damp sand.
Suddenly—
A sharp pain erupted inside his chest.
Chance doubled over.
"What...?"
His heartbeat accelerated.
Green light spread beneath his skin.
Veins glowed like rivers of emerald lightning.
His breathing became heavier.
"L-Let's...not..."
His muscles tightened.
Bones shifted.
"...do..."
His voice deepened.
"...whatever..."
His hands expanded.
"...this..."
His shirt stretched.
"...IS!"
CRACK!
A burst of gamma energy exploded outward.
Concrete shattered.
Dust filled the chamber.
Chance screamed—
But the scream transformed into something much deeper.
Much louder.
Much more powerful.
His body continued growing.
Six feet.
Seven.
Eight.
Nine.
His shoulders widened dramatically.
Muscles expanded across his arms and chest.
His skin became deep emerald green.
His dark hair shortened into a wild, rugged look.
His eyes glowed like polished jade.
Every heartbeat shook the chamber.
The transformation finally stopped.
The silence that followed felt enormous.
Chance looked at his massive hands.
"...No..."
He touched his face.
His voice rolled through the underground like thunder.
"What..."
He swallowed.
"...AM I?"
He spotted a reflective metal panel.
Walking toward it, he froze.
The reflection staring back wasn't entirely him anymore.
A gigantic green figure stood in his place.
Powerful.
Broad-shouldered.
Towering.
Yet behind those glowing eyes...
Chance was still there.
Still frightened.
Still confused.
Still himself.
"...Okay."
He took one long breath.
"I definitely need new clothes."
Without thinking, he scratched the back of his head.
The motion accidentally struck a support column.
The entire ceiling trembled.
Chance looked upward.
"Oh."
Pieces of concrete rained down.
"...That's bad."
He hurried toward the nearest opening.
Unfortunately...
Running now meant moving far faster than before.
One leap carried him nearly fifty feet.
"I DIDN'T MEAN TO—"
He crashed through three walls.
"...DO THAT!"
Above ground...
Police officers suddenly heard an enormous BOOM.
The ground shook.
Searchlights swung toward the damaged laboratory.
"What was that?"
Another crash echoed.
Then another.
Lucas looked toward the broken building.
His eyes widened.
"...Chance?"
Inside...
Chance stumbled through another wall.
"I'm sorry!"
Another accidental step.
A truck-sized steel door flew off its hinges.
"...Very sorry!"
He finally reached the outside.
Fresh night air rushed across his face.
The ocean stretched before him beneath the stars.
Chance stood silently.
He had never felt so...alive.
The wind felt stronger.
The moon appeared brighter.
He could hear waves crashing against distant cliffs miles away.
Then—
A spotlight hit him.
"There!"
Police officers froze.
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
Standing among the smoking ruins was a towering green giant.
One officer whispered,
"What...is that?"
Another raised a trembling radio.
"We've got...something."
"I don't know what."
Chance slowly raised one oversized hand.
"Hi..."
His deep voice echoed across the shoreline.
"I know this looks—"
Several officers instinctively aimed tranquilizer launchers.
Chance sighed.
"...Not ideal."
One dart fired.
It bounced harmlessly off his shoulder.
He looked at it.
"...Really?"
Panic spread.
More darts launched.
Chance covered his face.
"I don't want to fight!"
The impacts barely tickled.
One dart snapped in half.
Another bent.
Someone shouted,
"It's bulletproof!"
"I am?"
Chance muttered.
"Huh."
Lucas stepped forward.
"STOP!"
Everyone turned.
Lucas stared directly at the giant.
"...Chance?"
The giant froze.
Slowly...
He nodded.
"It's..."
His enormous voice softened.
"...me."
Lucas blinked.
"I knew you survived."
Chance laughed nervously.
"I kind of overachieved."
Before anyone could say another word—
A black helicopter appeared above the coastline.
It bore no government markings.
Only a silver emblem shaped like a serpent encircling a broken atom.
Its side door opened.
Masked soldiers rappelled downward.
One pointed directly at Chance.
"Gamma Subject confirmed."
Another smiled behind his visor.
"Alive."
The commander lifted a strange metallic weapon humming with violet energy.
"Our employers want him captured."
Chance looked from the soldiers to Lucas.
Then back again.
"...You know..."
His emerald eyes narrowed.
"I've had a very long night."
The commander fired.
A sphere of crackling energy hurtled toward Chance—
And for the first time, the giant known as Hulk the Metahuman clenched his massive fists, ready to fight not out of rage alone, but to protect the people standing behind him.
Part Three: The Serpent Initiative
The violet sphere streaked through the night like a miniature comet.
Chance had only a heartbeat to react.
He didn't know what the weapon was.
He didn't know what it would do.
He only knew one thing.
Lucas was standing directly behind him.
Without thinking, Chance stepped forward and spread his enormous arms.
The energy sphere slammed into his chest.
WHOOOOM!
A blast of violet light erupted across the shoreline, throwing sand, broken concrete, and seawater high into the air.
For several seconds, nobody could see anything.
When the dust cleared, Chance was still standing.
He looked down at the smoking mark on his chest.
"...That..."
He brushed away the soot.
"...actually stung."
The commander aboard the helicopter frowned.
"Impossible."
One of the masked soldiers checked a glowing tablet.
"Gamma physiology adapting faster than projections."
Another muttered, "He should have been unconscious."
The commander lowered his weapon.
"Increase the output."
Chance turned toward them.
"Okay."
He sighed.
"I've been blown up."
"I've accidentally demolished a building."
"I've discovered I'm green."
"And now people in tactical armor are trying to kidnap me."
He looked at Lucas.
"Is this a normal Thursday?"
Lucas blinked.
"It's...Saturday."
Chance scratched his head.
"Shows how lost I am."
Even in the middle of danger, Lucas couldn't help laughing.
"You still make terrible jokes."
"They're scientifically proven."
"They're scientifically awful."
The commander had heard enough.
"Open fire."
Instantly, half a dozen soldiers launched glowing restraint cables.
The electrified lines wrapped around Chance's arms, legs, and torso.
The soldiers smiled.
"We've got him."
Chance looked down.
"...These are fancy."
The restraints tightened.
Electricity surged through his body.
Green energy flickered beneath his skin.
Chance grimaced.
"Ow..."
For a moment, it seemed to work.
Then...
Every muscle in his body flexed.
SNAP!
The cables burst apart like old rope.
The broken ends whipped harmlessly back toward the soldiers.
One landed in the ocean with a hiss.
Chance stared at the dangling pieces.
"I think your warranty expired."
The commander growled.
"Deploy the Gamma Suppressor."
From the helicopter descended a metallic cylinder nearly the size of a car.
It slammed into the ground with a tremendous impact.
Panels unfolded.
Antennas extended.
A pulse of strange blue energy washed across the shoreline.
Chance suddenly felt dizzy.
His breathing became shallow.
His enormous muscles weakened.
"...That's..."
He stumbled.
"...new."
Lucas ran toward him.
"Chance!"
One soldier stepped between them.
"No civilians."
Lucas shoved him aside.
"He's my friend!"
The soldier raised his rifle.
Before he could pull the trigger—
A blur of green crossed the sand.
Chance moved faster than anyone expected.
Even weakened, he intercepted the weapon, crushed its barrel in one hand, and gently pushed the stunned soldier backward.
"I said..."
His voice rumbled like distant thunder.
"...leave him alone."
The commander narrowed his eyes.
"Interesting."
"So beneath the monster..."
"...the human remains."
He pressed a communicator.
"Phase Three authorization."
A calm voice answered from somewhere far away.
"Granted."
The commander smiled beneath his helmet.
"Release the Titan."
Far inside the helicopter's cargo hold...
Massive steel doors unlocked.
Heavy chains dropped away.
Something enormous shifted in the darkness.
A glowing red eye opened.
Then another.
A mechanical growl echoed through the night.
Chance looked upward.
"...That can't be good."
The cargo doors burst open.
A gigantic combat machine crashed onto the beach below.
Nearly fifteen feet tall, it was built from black alloy and reinforced titanium, with glowing crimson lines running across its armor. Hydraulic pistons hissed with every movement, and its fists were the size of wrecking balls.
Painted across its chest was a single designation:
TITAN-1
One of the soldiers announced proudly, "Our first anti-metahuman combat platform."
Titan-1's electronic voice boomed.
"PRIMARY OBJECTIVE: CAPTURE GAMMA SUBJECT."
Chance blinked.
"Really?"
He pointed at himself.
"I'm the gamma subject?"
Titan-1 answered by charging.
The machine's first punch hit like a speeding truck.
Chance barely raised his forearm in time.
The impact hurled him backward through a line of abandoned patrol vehicles.
Metal twisted around him.
Car alarms erupted all at once.
Chance slowly climbed out of the wreckage.
"...Okay."
He rolled one massive shoulder.
"That one definitely hurt."
Lucas ducked behind a concrete barrier.
"You can beat this thing!"
Chance looked at the towering robot.
"I've never fought anybody before!"
Titan-1 answered with another punch.
Chance instinctively ducked.
The robotic fist sailed over his head and flattened an empty lifeguard station.
"...Guess I'm learning."
The fight quickly became a strange mixture of chaos and comedy.
Chance tried throwing a chunk of concrete.
It bounced harmlessly off Titan-1.
"Huh."
He threw a police cruiser instead.
The robot staggered several steps.
"...That's more effective."
Titan-1 fired miniature rockets.
Chance panicked.
"Oh, come on!"
He grabbed a nearby fishing boat and accidentally used it as a shield.
The explosions showered him with splintered wood.
Lucas shouted from a distance.
"I don't think that's Coast Guard approved!"
Chance laughed.
"I'll apologize later!"
The battle intensified.
Titan-1 adapted with every exchange, analyzing Chance's movements.
"SUBJECT EXHIBITS IMPROVISED COMBAT TACTICS."
Chance grinned.
"I prefer the term..."
He caught one of the robot's punches.
"...making it up as I go!"
With a mighty roar, he twisted, using the robot's momentum against it. Titan-1 crashed onto its back, sending a tremor through the beach.
The commander scowled.
"Enough."
He activated the Gamma Suppressor again.
A stronger pulse surged outward.
Chance dropped to one knee.
The green glow around him flickered.
His vision blurred.
His strength faded.
Titan-1 slowly rose and marched toward him.
Its right fist transformed into an enormous energy cannon.
"TARGET IMMOBILIZED."
Lucas looked desperately around the beach.
His eyes landed on the humming Gamma Suppressor.
"If that machine weakens Chance..."
He sprinted toward it.
Two soldiers moved to intercept him.
Lucas grabbed a discarded shovel from a maintenance truck.
"I am not a superhero..."
He swung the shovel, knocking one soldier's weapon aside.
"...but I can definitely ruin somebody's expensive equipment!"
He reached the suppressor's control panel and slammed the shovel into its exposed power conduits.
KRAKKA-BOOM!
Blue sparks erupted in every direction.
The suppressor overloaded.
Its energy field collapsed instantly.
Chance inhaled deeply.
The strength rushed back into every muscle.
Green light blazed from his eyes.
He slowly stood.
Titan-1 fired its energy cannon.
Chance caught the blast with both hands, driving his feet deep into the sand as the beam pushed against him.
For a moment, it looked impossible.
Then he roared—a roar that echoed across the sea.
With one final surge, he redirected the beam upward.
It struck the hovering helicopter instead.
The aircraft lurched violently, engines failing.
"Retreat!" the commander shouted.
Smoke poured from the helicopter as it veered away from the coastline, disappearing into the clouds with the remaining soldiers.
Titan-1, its remote link severed, froze where it stood.
Its glowing red eyes dimmed.
The machine collapsed with a thunderous crash.
Silence settled over the beach.
Emergency sirens echoed in the distance.
Chance looked at the ruined shoreline.
The smashed robot.
The destroyed vehicles.
The cracked sand beneath his feet.
He sighed.
"I really need to stop meeting people like this."
Lucas laughed, despite his exhaustion.
"You've officially had the worst weekend in history."
Chance managed a smile.
"Maybe."
Then his expression turned thoughtful.
"They called me a gamma subject."
"They built that robot specifically to fight someone like me."
He looked toward the horizon, where the damaged helicopter had vanished.
"They knew I existed before I even knew what I was."
High above the clouds, inside the fleeing helicopter, the masked commander contacted an unseen superior.
"The retrieval has failed."
A calm voice answered over the communicator.
"I expected as much."
"What are your orders?"
There was a pause.
Then the voice replied,
"Continue observing Hulk the Metahuman."
"We have other assets."
"In time...he will discover that tonight's battle was merely the opening move."
The communicator went silent.
The commander looked down at the distant shoreline, where the green giant stood beside his lone friend.
"This is far from over."
Part Four: The Hero Nobody Expected
The first rays of dawn stretched across Alder's Point.
The beach looked as though a hurricane had held a wrestling match with a scrapyard.
Half-buried patrol cars.
A broken lifeguard tower.
Pieces of the dormant Titan-1 robot scattered across the shoreline.
Emergency responders had formed a wide perimeter, unsure whether to approach the enormous green figure standing quietly in the sand.
Chance looked around.
"...I should probably explain."
No one volunteered to hear the explanation.
A nervous police captain stepped forward with a megaphone.
"Giant green...individual!"
Chance tilted his head.
"I assume that's me."
"We don't know if you're dangerous."
Chance sighed.
"Neither do I."
The captain looked confused.
"...That's...not comforting."
"Trust me," Chance replied. "It's not comforting for me either."
A few reporters nearby chuckled despite themselves.
Lucas stood beside Chance.
"Maybe you should sit down."
"I don't think there's a chair big enough."
"Fair point."
"You've always been the practical one."
"I have to be."
"Because?"
Lucas smiled.
"You once tried to microwave ice cream."
"It was an experiment."
"It became soup."
"Exactly."
Several paramedics cautiously approached.
One elderly medic looked up at Chance.
"Mind if I check your pulse?"
Chance blinked.
"...Sure?"
The medic stared at his wrist.
"...Actually, I don't think we brought a blood-pressure cuff your size."
Chance laughed so hard that nearby seagulls scattered into the sky.
For the first time since the explosion, the people around him realized something surprising.
The giant wasn't roaring.
He wasn't threatening anyone.
He was...awkward.
That peaceful moment ended with the scream of jet engines overhead.
Three sleek black aircraft streaked across the sky, flying far lower than commercial planes ever would.
Their engines emitted no visible flames.
Only a strange blue glow.
The police captain looked upward.
"What now?"
Chance frowned.
"I have a feeling..."
The aircraft circled once before vanishing behind a bank of clouds.
No attack came.
No explosions followed.
They were watching.
Miles away, beneath an abandoned steel mill hidden in the hills, the Serpent Initiative operated from a vast underground headquarters.
Banks of holographic displays filled a command center.
Dozens of technicians studied recordings of the previous night's battle.
On the largest screen, Chance's transformation played frame by frame.
A woman in a charcoal-gray suit entered the room.
She carried herself with quiet authority.
Silver streaks ran through her dark hair, and a long scar crossed her left eyebrow.
Everyone stood as she approached.
"Director."
She nodded.
"Sit."
Director Selene Voss, leader of the Serpent Initiative, folded her hands behind her back.
"Our commander underestimated Subject Gamma."
One scientist nervously replied, "His strength increased every time he adapted to a threat."
"Correct."
Another added, "And psychologically..."
She paused the recording on Chance shielding Lucas from the violet blast.
"...he consistently prioritized civilians over himself."
Director Voss studied the image.
"So."
"The monster has a conscience."
One officer frowned.
"Should we eliminate him before he becomes stronger?"
Voss answered immediately.
"No."
She smiled slightly.
"I want him alive."
Elsewhere in the underground complex...
Massive blast doors opened.
Inside rested rows of containment chambers.
Some were empty.
Others were occupied.
Shadowy figures stood behind reinforced glass.
One chamber contained a person whose body crackled with blue electricity.
Another housed someone whose skin resembled polished stone.
A third was wrapped in heavy chains despite appearing completely still.
Above the chambers, a sign read:
PROJECT ASCENDANT
One technician whispered, "If Hulk continues resisting us..."
Another finished the sentence.
"...we'll awaken the others."
Back in Alder's Point, Chance faced a more immediate problem.
He was still nine feet tall.
Still green.
Still wearing the shredded remains of yesterday's clothes.
"This is embarrassing."
Lucas crossed his arms.
"You're worried about fashion?"
"I look like I lost a fight with a lawn."
"You kind of won."
"I still look ridiculous."
As Chance spoke, another pain rippled through his body.
He winced.
"Uh-oh."
Green energy flickered beneath his skin.
His massive frame began shrinking.
Bones shifted.
Muscles contracted.
Within moments, Chance stood once more as an ordinary human—albeit exhausted, barefoot, and dressed in tattered clothing.
He blinked several times.
"...I'm...me?"
Lucas stared.
"So you can change back."
Chance looked at his normal hands.
"I didn't even try."
The police captain cautiously approached.
"So..."
He looked from Chance to the enormous footprints in the sand.
"That was really you?"
Chance nodded sheepishly.
"...Yeah."
The captain sighed.
"I have absolutely no paperwork for this."
The crowd's tension eased.
Some people even applauded.
Not because they understood what had happened.
But because the giant had saved lives instead of taking them.
A young girl stepped through the crowd, clutching a sketchbook.
Her mother tried to stop her.
"It's okay," Chance said gently.
The girl held up a crayon drawing.
It showed a smiling green giant lifting a crashed helicopter away from frightened people.
At the top, she had written in uneven letters:
THANK YOU, HULK.
Chance's eyes softened.
"You drew this?"
She nodded.
"You looked scary..."
She smiled.
"...but nice."
Chance accepted the picture carefully.
"I've never been called both at the same time."
The little girl giggled.
"So...are you a superhero?"
Chance looked at the drawing, then at the damaged beach around him.
He wasn't sure.
He hadn't chosen any of this.
He had simply tried to protect his friend.
Finally, he answered, "I'm...still figuring that out."
That evening, after giving statements to the authorities, Chance and Lucas returned to Chance's small apartment.
The front door barely opened before Chance froze.
His living room was in complete disarray.
Not from a burglary.
From himself.
Broken furniture.
Bent doorframes.
A shattered ceiling fan hanging by its wires.
Lucas slowly surveyed the damage.
"You transformed in here before leaving for work yesterday, didn't you?"
Chance scratched the back of his head.
"...Apparently."
Lucas picked up what had once been a coffee mug.
"This used to say 'World's Best Scientist.'"
"It was optimistic."
Suddenly, every light in the apartment flickered.
Chance frowned.
"You see that?"
Lucas nodded.
Then came a sharp beep from the television.
Though it had not been turned on, its screen glowed with static.
The static cleared.
A woman appeared on the screen.
Director Selene Voss.
She looked directly into the camera.
"Good evening, Chance Wallenda."
Chance's blood ran cold.
"You know my name."
"I know far more than that."
Her calm expression never changed.
"You believe your transformation began at Horizon Science Center."
"It did."
"No."
She shook her head.
"That was only the catalyst."
She leaned slightly closer.
"The truth began long before you were born."
The television abruptly went black.
Silence filled the apartment.
Lucas looked at Chance.
"What does she mean?"
Chance stared at the blank screen.
"I..."
He swallowed.
"...don't know."
Far beneath the city, Director Voss watched another monitor displaying Chance's stunned expression.
She smiled faintly.
"Now he'll start asking the right questions."
Behind her, a sealed vault door slowly unlocked with a deep metallic rumble.
A booming voice echoed from within the darkness.
"Has...the Gamma Heir...awakened?"
Director Voss answered without hesitation.
"Yes."
"And soon...he'll come looking for us."
Volume One Finale
Part Five: The Birth of a Legend
The city of Alder's Point had changed.
Only five days had passed since the Horizon Science Center disaster, yet the world already felt different.
Every news channel had a different name for him.
"The Green Giant."
"The Gamma Monster."
"The Walking Disaster."
But one phrase appeared more often than any other:
"Hulk the Metahuman."
Chance Wallenda sat on the roof of his apartment building, staring at the city lights below.
A small drawing from the little girl on the beach rested beside him.
The picture showed a green figure holding up a collapsing building while people cheered.
Chance smiled faintly.
"I don't know if I'm a hero."
He looked at his hands.
"Heroes usually know what they're doing."
The rooftop door opened.
Lucas stepped outside carrying two cups of coffee.
He handed one over.
"You know you can't drink coffee like that anymore."
Chance looked at the cup.
"I can still drink coffee."
"You shattered a mug yesterday."
"I squeezed too hard."
"You crushed a steel spoon."
"I was stirring aggressively."
Lucas sat beside him.
"You realize you're probably the strongest person on Earth now."
Chance looked uncomfortable.
"That doesn't make me special."
Lucas looked surprised.
"No?"
"No."
Chance stared at the city.
"It makes me responsible."
For the first time since the accident, Chance understood something.
The gamma radiation hadn't just changed his body.
It had changed his place in the world.
People would fear him.
People would hunt him.
People would try to control him.
But if he could stop someone from getting hurt...
Could he really ignore that?
Suddenly, every screen in the city activated.
Televisions.
Phones.
Billboards.
Security monitors.
All displayed the same symbol.
A silver serpent wrapped around a broken atom.
The Serpent Initiative.
Director Selene Voss appeared.
"Citizens of Alder's Point."
Her voice echoed across the city.
"You have witnessed an event beyond human understanding."
Images appeared.
The destroyed science center.
Titan-1 attacking.
Chance's transformation.
"The creature known as Hulk the Metahuman is not a miracle."
A pause.
"He is an experiment."
People in the streets watched nervously.
Chance stood.
"What is she doing?"
Lucas frowned.
"Turning everyone against you."
Director Voss continued.
"For decades, secret organizations have studied the evolution of humanity."
"The next stage has always been inevitable."
Images appeared of strange experiments.
Enhanced individuals.
Advanced technology.
Unknown creatures.
"And now..."
The screen showed Chance.
"...the first successful Gamma Metahuman has awakened."
Chance clenched his fists.
"She makes me sound like a weapon."
Lucas looked at him.
"Are you?"
Chance looked away.
For a moment...
He didn't know.
Then the city shook.
A deep rumble moved beneath the streets.
People screamed.
Cracks spread across roads.
The ground split open near the center of Alder's Point.
Something enormous emerged.
A massive armored figure climbed from underground.
Not a robot.
Not completely human.
A creature covered in dark metallic armor with glowing orange veins.
Its voice echoed.
"LOCATED."
"TARGET: HULK."
Lucas stared.
"Please tell me that's not another one."
Chance sighed.
"I was hoping for at least one normal week."
The creature launched itself upward.
It landed on the rooftop with enough force to collapse nearby buildings.
Chance stepped forward.
The creature studied him.
"You are the Gamma Heir."
Chance narrowed his eyes.
"I don't know what that means."
"It means..."
The creature's fists ignited with orange energy.
"...you belong to us."
Chance transformed.
Green energy erupted around him.
The familiar roar shook the city.
But this time...
Something was different.
He wasn't afraid.
He wasn't confused.
He wasn't fighting because he was angry.
He was fighting because someone needed him.
The Hulk emerged.
The battle tore across Alder's Point.
The armored creature struck with incredible speed.
Each punch created shockwaves.
Buildings trembled.
Cars lifted into the air.
Hulk blocked attacks that would've destroyed entire streets.
The creature slammed him through a skyscraper wall.
Hulk climbed from the rubble.
"Okay..."
He cracked his neck.
"That was rude."
The creature attacked again.
But Hulk noticed something.
It wasn't trying to destroy the city.
It was trying to distract him.
Every attack pushed him farther away from the Serpent Initiative's hidden location.
Hulk stopped.
The creature froze.
"What are you doing?"
Hulk looked around.
"Thinking."
A dangerous concept for his enemies.
"But I figured something out."
The creature raised its fist.
"What?"
Hulk smiled.
"You keep trying to make me angry."
He stepped forward.
"But you don't understand something."
The creature hesitated.
"I'm already strong."
The ground cracked beneath Hulk's feet.
"I don't need rage to fight."
His eyes glowed.
"I have a reason."
Hulk grabbed the creature's arm.
Instead of throwing it blindly...
He carefully redirected its energy.
The creature crashed into an empty construction zone instead of a crowded street.
Hulk followed.
The creature struggled.
"Why?"
"Why what?"
"Why protect humans?"
Hulk looked at his own massive hands.
"Because before all this..."
His voice softened.
"I was one."
The creature's armor began failing.
Warning lights flashed.
"Impossible."
Hulk placed one hand against its chest.
"You're not a monster."
The creature looked confused.
"You were made into one."
With a final push, Hulk disabled the energy core powering the armor.
The creature collapsed.
Seconds later...
Police and emergency teams arrived.
But this time...
They didn't aim weapons.
They watched.
The people watched.
The same people who had feared him days earlier.
A firefighter approached.
"You saved the city."
Hulk looked away.
"I caused a lot of damage too."
The firefighter nodded.
"Maybe."
Then he smiled.
"But you're the reason we're standing here."
Later that night...
Chance returned to his apartment.
The city was quiet.
For once.
Lucas sat across from him.
"So."
"So?"
"What now?"
Chance looked at the drawing on the table.
The words:
THANK YOU, HULK.
He smiled.
"I guess I figure out how to live with this."
Lucas nodded.
"And the Hulk?"
Chance looked toward the moonlit skyline.
"He isn't a monster."
A pause.
"He's a part of me."
Deep beneath the Serpent Initiative headquarters...
Director Selene Voss watched the battle footage.
She wasn't angry.
She was impressed.
The failed Titan.
The failed hunter.
The failed capture.
All of it had taught her something.
"He has control."
A scientist nodded.
"More than expected."
Voss looked at a sealed chamber.
"Then we move to the next stage."
The massive doors opened.
Inside was a figure covered in energy restraints.
A voice whispered from the darkness.
"Is the Gamma Heir ready?"
Voss smiled.
"No."
She looked at the monitor showing Hulk standing beneath the city lights.
"But he will be."
On a rooftop above Alder's Point...
Chance stood alone.
The wind moved through his hair.
The city stretched before him.
Somewhere below, danger waited.
Somewhere beyond, enemies prepared.
But for the first time...
Chance Wallenda wasn't running from what he had become.
He raised his fist.
A faint green glow surrounded it.
"I don't know where this road leads."
The Hulk within him stirred.
"But wherever it goes..."
His eyes shined emerald.
"...we go together."
And so began the legend, of a metahuman who would not mind doing what he ought to.
