AN EQUAL SOCIETY IS AN IMPOSSIBLE DREAM
Born 2003, M, from Newcastle, South Africa                     AN EQUAL SOCIETY IS AN IMPOSSIBLE DREAM.

An equal society is an impossible dream. High heels, high mansions stand tall against the poor. They hover above their heads like clouds in the sky. The tinkling dinner glasses are too loud for them. Glistening watches and necklaces have blinded us humanity. In every society there’s a library: high walls, high shelves filled with our personalities. The rich are stored in a high shelf, the poorer on the low shelf. Always are and always will be. No amount of screams nor protests can move them up to the top shelf.
Then we have ego. Our dearest friend whom we hold dear in our hearts. With every heartbeat, he grows strong. With every whisper, comparison, he’s cheerful. His flame burns brightly in our hearts. Until we stomp out that flame an equal society is an impossible dream. A beam of light in the moonless night. Then we have culture. A path that we follow until death do us a part. A part we play in the afterlife. Men are often celebrated, embraced, loved and feared in our societies. Women are celebrated, embraced and loved if they bear sons in their marriage. Though it’s worth to note that the pendulum has swung. The law has stretched its limbs to protect women’s rights and dignity. But still the high prison walls filled with men create an unequal society.
Height, lights matter. They are measured everyday to breed an unequal society. The light skin beams in the moonlight and the dark skin dims in the moonless night. Then we have race. Police brutality covers our Tv screens. Black eyes glistening with tears watch with hate in their heart. Race is one of the biggest barriers to an equal society. Some of the world’s scariest massacres have occurred due to race. How many lives did the Jews lost in the holocaust? How many lives we lost in the hands of apartheid? More than we can count. How much pain did they suffer? How many tears did they shed and how many died in their eyes? More than we can imagine.
Only if we can be one. See eye to eye. Hear the same song. Dance to the same rhythm. Breathe the same wind. Only then we can create an equal society. A society that holds every heart dear. A society that is indifferent to our differences. A society where black, white, tall, short, rich and poor can live in harmony with their differences. Only then will our dream of an equal society be possible.

08/06/2026You are probably correct. There are those who would prevent equal rights because they fear loosing their accumulation. I still dream that it may come, if slowly.

08/04/2026I believe equality in society means equal rights and equal opportunities for everyone to grow. It doesn't mean equality between those who try harder and those who are lazy or indifferent towards personal growth.

08/04/2026You right. The thing is equal rights and equal opportunities are just fancy words with no real function behind them.

08/03/2026Very interesting commentary. I certainly don't know what the answer is. I am a white person. Many years ago we thought people like Nelson Mandela and Hugh Masakela (i.e. the trumpet player) would bring common decency and a better life. Then people like Joseph Mugabe appeared on the scene in Zimbabwe. God help us!!!

08/04/2026I think the first step is to ask ourselves whether we want an equal society. Cause if I'm being honest although an equal society is an ideal dream I don't want to live in it. I think we derive a lot of pleasure from seeing people who are lesser than us in order to feel good about ourselves. Anyway thank you for reviewing my essay. Much appreciated.
