Chain of Despair
Born 1983, M, from Atlanta,Texas, United States
Beneath Duel University, in an abandoned sewer tunnel forgotten by time, Arachnir watched a flickering view screen that revealed the university gym above.
On the screen stood Jasmine and another teenage girl with brown hair and brown eyes. The girl wore a colorful, multi-patterned leotard and carried herself with confidence. Her name was Kimberly.
A cruel idea began to form in Arachnir’s mind. If he could capture Kimberly, he believed he could force Jasmine into surrendering.
Arachnir smiled as the plan took shape. He imagined Jasmine powerless, forced to choose between protecting herself and saving her friend. To him, the fear and desperation his schemes created were the true reward.
Arachnir’s eight mechanical legs scraped against the cold stone floor as he moved through his hidden underground lair. The abandoned sewer echoed with the sound of metal against concrete as he approached his laptop, its screen casting a pale glow across his shadowed form.
Using two of his mechanical limbs, Arachnir searched through countless profiles, looking for someone who could serve his purpose. He studied each name carefully until one caught his attention.
Andy.
Once a skilled card hunter, Andy had been a respected figure before his mind was taken over by a sinister force. When that dark influence was finally removed, the damage it left behind was impossible to ignore. Andy’s mind had been shattered by the experience, leaving him unstable and lost.
In a moment of madness, Andy tore away his former identity, ripping off the purple garment that had once represented who he was. Yet he kept the black mask, a reminder of the hunter he used to be.
Now disconnected from society, Andy wandered the streets wearing only a worn brown fur coat, a broken survivor haunted by his past.
Arachnir stared at the profile with interest. To him, Andy was not a tragedy—he was an opportunity. A weapon waiting to be pointed in the right direction.
A small antenna slowly rose from the armored body of Arachnir, unfolding with a quiet mechanical hiss. A pulse of energy traveled through the device as it transmitted a coded message into the darkness, reaching its intended target: Andy.
As he waited, Arachnir reflected on his previous defeat. He remembered the final duel, when Freddy had fallen and his soul was banished to the Umbral Realm. That failure had taught him a valuable lesson—he could no longer rely on a single weapon or a single plan.
This time, Arachnir believed he had created something that could not fail.
The mechanical villain moved deeper into his lair until he reached a strange device covered in gears, tubes, and glowing symbols. A label was etched into its metal frame:
FINSTER ONE.
Arachnir placed a small piece of clay into the machine’s chamber and pulled a heavy lever. The contraption roared to life. Lights flashed across its surface as gears turned and strange electronic sounds filled the underground chamber.
After several moments, the machine released a burst of steam. A hidden door on its back slowly opened, revealing an army of newly created clay figures standing motionless inside.
Arachnir’s mechanical legs shifted as he looked over his creations.
With a cold, commanding voice, he pointed toward a swirling portal that shimmered nearby.
“Go,” he ordered. “Wear them down. Keep Jasmine and Kimberly distracted until Andy arrives.”
The clay warriors marched toward the portal, ready to carry out their master’s command. Deep beneath Duel University, Arachnir watched with confidence, certain that this time his enemies would not escape his grasp.
Inside the gym at Duel University, the magic ring in Jasmine’s belly button suddenly began to glow. A strange sensation rushed through her—a warning, a feeling that danger was approaching.
But this time, the threat felt different.
It was not just one card hunter.
Jasmine closed her eyes and focused. A flash of blue light appeared in her hands, forming a small metal box. She lifted the latch and opened it, revealing two compact handheld phasers hidden inside.
Without hesitation, she adjusted the settings to maximum power. The blue box vanished in a shimmer of energy, leaving the two weapons behind. Jasmine picked up one phaser and handed the other to Kimberly.
Kimberly stared at the unfamiliar device with curiosity and uncertainty. She had never seen anything like it before. She did not know what it was, how it worked, or what she was supposed to do with it.
Jasmine quickly motioned toward a concealed area of the gym.
“Stay here,” she instructed.
The two girls moved into hiding as Kimberly continued studying the strange weapon in her hands. She carefully examined every detail, trying to understand the device before she had to use it.
Then the air changed.
A swirling portal opened in the center of the gym, and an army of clay warriors marched through.
Jasmine stepped forward immediately. Raising her phaser, she fired.
Bright blasts of energy streaked across the room, striking the advancing clay soldiers. One after another, the creatures shattered into pieces, their forms breaking apart under the powerful blasts.
Kimberly watched closely, still nervous but realizing she could not stay hidden forever.
With trembling hands, she aimed the phaser and fired.
The shot missed.
She tried again.
Another miss.
But with each attempt, her confidence grew. She steadied her breathing and focused on her target. The next time she raised the weapon, her hands no longer shook.
She fired.
The blast struck a clay soldier directly, causing it to crack apart before collapsing into scattered fragments on the floor.
Far below the university, in the abandoned sewer tunnels, Arachnir watched the battle unfold on his view screen.
His mechanical body remained still, but his anger was obvious.
This was not how he had planned it.
He had expected Jasmine and Kimberly to rely on their martial arts abilities. He had expected a simple battle of skill and strength.
He had not expected them to be armed with technology powerful enough to destroy his creations.
For the first time, Arachnir wondered if his carefully designed plan had a flaw.
Andy entered Duel University through the front doors. At that moment, Professor Fenny Chandler was leaving his classroom and noticed the strange-looking individual wearing a mask and a brown fur coat.
Instead of calling security, Feeny decided to follow him, curious about who this mysterious person was.
Andy entered the gym just as the last clay soldier was destroyed.
Kimberly spotted Andy walking in and immediately raised her phaser, ready for a threat. But the moment Andy saw her, he slowly removed his black mask.
Kimberly froze.
Her eyes widened as she recognized the person standing beneath the mask. A gasp escaped her lips, and she dropped her phaser in shock.
She stood there, unable to move, tears beginning to roll down her cheeks.
“No... it can’t be,” Kimberly cried.
Overcome with emotion, Kimberly turned and ran, tears streaming down her face.
Fenny followed Kimberly as she ran out of the university doors and collapsed onto the steps outside. “Ms. Parker, is everything okay?” Fenny asked gently.
Kimberly didn’t answer. She sat with her head between her knees, quietly crying as she tried to process the emotions overwhelming her.
Fenny watched her for a moment but didn’t press her for answers. He knew that sometimes words weren’t what someone needed.
Instead, he simply sat down beside her on the steps and stayed there.
Kimberly slowly raised her head after finally letting herself cry. Her eyes were red, and tears still streamed down her face.
“That man back there... was my father,” Kimberly said, her voice shaking.
Feeny looked at her in surprise. “What do you mean, was your father, Ms. Parker?”
Kimberly wiped her tears but struggled to hold herself together.
“He was my father until he lost a Shadow Game,” she explained. “After that, he was transformed into one of those mind-controlled Card Hunters.”
Her voice cracked as she looked back toward the university doors.
“I mean, look at him now. He’s not even himself anymore. He’s completely out of his mind.”
Kimberly lowered her head again, overwhelmed by the pain of seeing someone she loved become someone she barely recognized.
Feeny sat quietly beside Kimberly for a moment, allowing her time to collect herself. He could see the pain in her eyes and knew that no simple words could erase what she was feeling.
“Ms. Parker,” Feeny said gently, “I can’t pretend to understand exactly what you’re going through. Seeing someone you love changed into someone you no longer recognize must be incredibly difficult.”
Kimberly looked down at the steps, wiping away another tear.
“But there’s something important you need to remember,” Feeny continued. “The person you knew as your father is still in there. The fact that you recognized him and the fact that you still care about him means that the bond between you hasn’t disappeared.”
Kimberly looked at him, listening carefully.
“Right now, you’re seeing the damage that was done to him,” Feeny said. “But don’t let that make you forget who he was before. He was your father, and he was someone who loved you.”
“What if he can’t come back?” Kimberly asked softly.
Feeny gave her a reassuring look. “Then you face that challenge one step at a time. But don’t give up on him simply because he’s lost his way. Sometimes people need someone who remembers who they truly are until they can remember it themselves.”
Kimberly took a shaky breath.
“I don’t know if I’m strong enough,” she admitted.
Feeny smiled gently. “Strength is not about never feeling afraid or hurt, Ms. Parker. Strength is choosing to do what is right even when your heart is breaking.”
Kimberly looked back toward the university doors, thinking about Andy.
“I want my father back,” she whispered.
“Then don’t stop believing in him,” Feeny replied. “That may be the one thing he needs most.”
Kimberly sat in silence, staring at the university doors. Feeny's words echoed in her mind, but the image of her father standing in the gym refused to leave her thoughts.
After several moments, she took a deep breath and slowly rose to her feet.
"Thank you, Professor Feeny," she said quietly. "I don't know what happens next... but I know I can't run away anymore."
Feeny stood beside her and offered a reassuring smile.
"Whatever you're about to face, Ms. Parker, you don't have to face it alone."
Kimberly nodded. She wiped the last of the tears from her face and looked back toward the building. Somewhere inside was the man who had once been her father—a man trapped beneath the control of forces he never chose.
"I'll find a way to save you, Dad," she whispered. "No matter what it takes."
Without another word, Kimberly walked back toward the university doors. Feeny watched her go, silently hoping that determination would be enough to overcome the darkness that had claimed Andy.
As the doors slowly closed behind her, the campus fell quiet once again.
But deep inside the university, someone else had been watching.
A shadowy figure smiled from the darkness.
"The reunion has begun," the figure whispered. "Now let's see whether love is strong enough to break the chains of despair."
The figure vanished into the shadows, leaving only an eerie silence behind.
