The red slide
Born 2015, F, from Kentucky, United StatesI plop into the water. I just finished sliding down on the yellow slide. I like the yellow slide. It twists and turns. It pushes you down fast, but not too fast. Definitely not as fast as the red waterslide.
As I float up after riding the yellow slide. I notice my mom and dad. I swim over and step out of the pool. My dad says, "What about the red slide? We're not leaving unless you guys go on the red one."
I hesitate, but then my sister, Elizabeth agrees and starts walking over to the steps leading to the waterslides.
Eventually, I run over to Elizabeth and follow her up the steps. "I'm really scared." I say as we walk up.
"What makes you think I'm not?" Elizabeth asks.
We finally reach the top, I really regret this now. But I think to myself, "Bragging rights."
I see two of my sisters, April and Noelle walking up. Elizabeth is next in line. "What slide?" The lifeguard asks.
"The red one." Elizabeth answers. The life guard directs her on what to do. "Can I plug my nose as I go down?" Elizabeth asks. "Yeah, just make sure your hand is behind your head."
Elizabeth gets pushed off the slide by the blasting water. I look as Elizabeth rips through the water. "Oh no." I think to myself. But now the lifeguard is asking ME which one I want to go down.
I stop and think. I want to say I want to go down the yellow slide, but sadly, I say, "The red slide."
I think the life guard could sense the hesitating tone in my voice, because she started hyping me up. "It's not that scary, it's really fun." She said.
"Okay..." I didnt want to hold up the line. I sit on the slide. I wanted to do the position Elizabeth was in, but I didn't feel secure. I was already starting to slide down. I tried how you're supposed to go down the slide, but I still didn't feel secure.
I was really slipping now. I hit the drop. I screamed and I forgot to stay in form. I saw the concrete in between the slides. I was scared I was going to fly over and hit the ground.
I hit a bump that made me fly a little bit. After that, I blurred everything else out. The last thing I remembered was flying into the water.
I got out of the pool. One lifeguard by the pool said my nose was bleeding on the outside. It was a scratch I gave myself from pinching my nose too hard. I went over to the First Aid booth, and they just got me a wipe for my nose.
After that, I went back in the pool again. Sometimes I still get the feeling I had when going down the slide when I think of that trip.
But I am very happy my dad forced me to that, because now I overcame my fear.

10/02/2026Thanks for sharing and congrats on being this week's Star! The part about seeing the concrete definitely helped the reader understand your fear. That was a vivid and memorable line!

Additional Comments: Sometimes, doing something that you are a little nervous or afraid to do is the best way to grow. I am reminded of the first time that I parachuted. We had trained and we knew it was safe, but still, to jump out of a perfectly good plane on purpose! I was more scared of holding up the person behind me than the actual jump, just as you said. It turned out to be a lot of fun.

09/16/2026That’s good! I think after I went on the red slide, I preferred it more then the yellow slide. I was very proud of myself for going down the red side that night.
