As i walked into my house on Saturday night, i thought about the past week and how my life had changed so quickly. I had never been popualr. I had a few good friends but that was pretty much it. Now, everyone knew my name.
"Do you remember what the spirit day is for today?" I asked my best friend Katie as we were getting ready for school on Monday morning.
"Yeah, it's twin day! Remember we planned our outfits on Friday?" She replied.
"Oh, yeah. Blue skirt and white shirt, right?"
"Yep!" She said with a big smile on her face. I couldn't figure out why she was so happy to be getting ready for school on a Monday. Other than the fact that it was our Homecoming spirit week, nothing exciting was going on. Mondays were always uneventful in our school.
"Why are you so happy today?" I asked her as i drove us to the school. I had gotten my license and was able to drive us at the start of the school year and we were both happy we no longer had to take the bus.
"Im not sure. Why not be happy!?"
"Maybe because it's a Monday morning and no one should be happy on Monday mornings!" I said.
"Well, it's Homecoming week! It will be fun."
"Hopefully."
I always dreaded Homecoming. It was my Junior year in highschool and i had still never been asked to a dance. This week always left me depressed and wishing i had a boyfriend. I just wasn't the type of girl guys liked. I wasnt popular, had average looks, there wasn't anything exciting or interesting about me.
The Homecoming dance was on Saturday and i wasn't planning on going. Katie would probably be asked, she was beautiful and many guys had crushes on her. Katie kept telling me that i would be asked, that guys liked me as well, but i didn't believe her. Most of the cute guys had girlfriends already anyways. Plus, the only guy i was interested in was the star quarterback and everyone knew that would never happen. Jocks always go for the cheerleaders.
Halfway through the day, i had already seen seven girls get asked to Homecoming, including Katie. She was asked by a cute football player named Zac. He brought her flowers and had another guy sing for her. Of course, she said yes. Who wouldn't?
When i drove her home after school that day, it was all she could talk about. I was happy for her of course, but there was also a part of me that was jealous of how easy she had it.
Tuesday and Wednesday went by and were very uneventful. I had a test in math and studied for that most of the night on Tuesday. More girls were asked to Homecoming and i was getting deeper and deeper into a slump. Thursday was the first day something of importance happened. We got paired off in Science class and i was paired with Jake. Jake. The star quaterback with the deep blue eyes and amazing smile. Yeah, that Jake. I didn't know what to do at first but he was really nice. We talked, and he kept the conversation going like he actually wanted to talk to me.
We only had until Friday afternoon to finish our projects so we decided to meet up at my house after school and talk about it at lunch. That lunch was the best of my life. Katie and Zac sat with me and Jake. Jake and Zac are best friends, which i thought was ironic because Katie and I were best friends. Jake and i figured out what we wanted to do as our science project by the end of lunch. When the end of the day came, my heart we beating out of my chest and i had the worst butterflies of my life. Jake followed me home in his car so he didn't have to leave his car at the school. Katie was a little upset when i couldnt give her a ride home but she understood after i explained the situation to her. She freaked out and i had to calm her down while trying to keep myself calm at the same time. I told her it was no big deal and i knew nothing would happen between us, most likely, but i was still excited. Who could blame me?
Jake was really sweet. He helped me on things i didnt understand and by five we had the project done. I was dissapointed though. Being done with the poject meant he would leave and i probably wouldn't talk to him again. But after we put the project away, he stayed. We talked more and relised we both loved scary movies.
We went downstairs and put in the exorcist, my favorite scary movie, and made some popcorn. By eight, when the movie was over, we had both fallen asleep on the couch. When we finally woke up, we realised he needed to leave because it was starting to get late. I showed him to the door but before he left, he kissed me. I stood there in shock as he drove down the street. I called Katie as soon as i could move again.
"Wait, he WHAT?!" She yelled into the phone after i had told her about the kiss.
"He just leaned in and kissed me. Just like that. I couldn't even move."
"On the lips? Or cheek?"
"Lips!" I replied.
"Im so happy for you! Do you think he'll ask you to Homecoming?"
"I dont think so. We JUST started to talk! I'll talk about this with you more tomorrow, okay?"
"Okay! See you tomorrow!"
"Bye!"
I was in shock still. That kiss had made my week ten times better.
The next day at school, Jake found me first thing in the morning. He walked me to my classes and held my hand the entire way. I couldn't even fathom how this could happen so fast. To me of all people.
It was Friday, which meant that the Homecoming game was that night and Homecoming was the next day. Jake had asked me to go to the game to support him, so of course i said yes. Although i never went to school football games.
They won the football game that night, all thanks to Jake's winning pass. Right as i was about to leave, Katie dragged me onto the field. I had no idea what was going on. I look up to see the football team holding a gigantic banner that says 'Homecoming, Kayla?' and Jake standing next to it with white roses. He walked up to me and handed me the flowers and i said yes right away. Only when everyone started cheering did i realise we were still in front of the entire crowd.
That night Katie helped me find everything i needed for the dance. My dress was strapless with blue sequins on top and a black bottom. Katie and i talked the entire night about the dance and how he asked me and about her and Zac. When it was finally Saturday we got ready right away. Zac and Jake picked us up from my house and we went out to eat at Olive Garden. The night was already going perfectly. Jake had told me i look beautiful ten times already. At the dance, we all danced together and had an amazing time. The only downfall was that everybody was staring at us. Jake was so popular and i was not at all. But i really didn't care. I was just having fun. It was the best night of my life and i know i will never forget it. For once, im looking forward to Monday morning.
