TOMBOY

By: Asqarini

How can a person accept destiny? I don’t know why, but what I've felt for these years has taught me a lot about living. I think that my childhood was as normal as other girls. But I’m not sure at what age I had a tendency to get along better with boys. I loved playing with them and doing sports, discussing about anything with my friends, who often said that I was a tomboy, for a girl, a bit straightforward and frank with everyone.

At that time I didn’t have any interest to wear girl’s clothes. I didn’t want to. I felt very comfortable with casual, sporty and simple clothing.
Then came the time when my parents heard that I had a fight against rascals on the streets, for small illogical reasons, which I considered as my self-defense. After the incident, they told me to do girl activities. They wanted me to take a dancing lesson. I protested. I said I don’t want to learn dancing, I want to learn karate or any kind of martial arts, so when I meet another annoying rascal on the street, I can do some moves on them!

But my Mom said: “You are a girl, so act like one. Behave and be graceful!

I never thought that it would be like this. All I ever wanted from my parents was their understanding. Yes, true life taught me so much, from small things, to the big ones. I just learned a lot becoming a girl, trying so hard to let myself “get back on track”, and make my parents proud.

***

But this time, Amanda, the school’s Queen of Popular, along with her followers, who always speak and act so similar, just like her, annoyed me…. I just didn’t understand why “A” disliked me?

But once, Tiffany, a shy, quiet and descent-hearted friend in class said: “Has anyone told you that you are perfect?” she said. “You have everything that a girl could ever want,” she continued. "Your skin is white, with hazel eyes and dark hair. You are perfect, Sally."

"I’m perfect?" Again I recall the words Tiffany said. Maybe that’s why Amanda dislikes me that bad; and often call me “Weirdo”.

***

“Umm… Sally, umm... they told me to give this stuff to you. It’s from Amanda,” said Tiffany in doubt.
“What kind of package is it?” I replied.
“I don’t know, open it yourself," She uttered.
“Okay” I agreed.

I opened the package carefully, and I realized inside it there was makeup: Lip-gloss, compact powder, deo, blush on, cologne, etc. 'What is this supposed to mean?' My mind questioned. Then, I open a note enclosed, which said:
"Hey Weirdo,
If you want to look pretty, use it, get it?”
Signed,
Amanda."

I just smirked…
“Hmm... the drama Queen is in action,” crossed my mind.
In seconds, I closed the package, and wrapped it up again. I brought it to Amanda’s table. As usual “A” was still being accompanied by her ganks.
She just sat there, showing her poker face…
I approached her, dashed the package at her table and said…

“Hey…Amanda, nice of you giving me this package and writing me this note:
'Sally, use this makeup and look pretty!'” I exclaimed and then continued saying: “You know what, do yourself a favor sweety? Why don’t you yourself use them before me, Amanda? And please…make up your heart and mind first, before you ask others to change their looks, Okay?” I spoke clearly and stared at her for a while...

Her face became red…. Her friends were speechless…

“Oh, by the way, 'A'”? I continued… "I am still happy being a tomboy! Get it?!"

They just stiffly sat there in silence….
