Case 23 - Pregnancy
Born 1983, M, from Atlanta,Texas, United StatesInspector Rebella Lucas had taken the day off and was sitting on the couch. Her husband Inspector Harvey Lucas came home from work. “Hi baby,” said Harvey as he was coming through the house. Rebella motioned for him to sit down. “I have something to tell you and I am not sure how to tell you,” said Rebella. “Something wrong?” asked Harvey. “I hid something from you,” said Rebella. “What are you talking about?” asked Harvey who was trying to make sense of the conversation. “I took a home pregnancy test about a week ago and then I took off today to verify I did it right. Baby, I am pregnant,” said Rebella. Harvey had a surprised look on his face then he hugged her. “Could you keep it a secret, I would like to be the one that breaks the news,” said Rebella. “Sure baby,” said Harvey hugging her again.
Rebella was walking down the hall at the 169th precinct. She was thinking about her career and how she was going to break the news that she was pregnant. She went to Captain Graves’ office. He was on the phone and acknowledged she was there but let him finish on the phone. While he was on the phone she went down the hall to get a drink of water. She noticed a flyer on the bulletin board for a weekend dispatcher. “That’s it” thought Rebella to herself. She went back up the hall and Captain Graves was off the phone. “Please sit down. What is on your mind?” asked Captain Graves. “I would like to apply for the weekend dispatch position and leave the Special Investigation Division,” said Rebella. “Is there a reason why?” asked Captain Graves. “Yes, Sir, I am pregnant.” said Rebella. “Congratulations to you and Harvey” said Captain Graves. “I am fixing to go talk to J.P.” said Rebella getting up. “I am going to get with Ola because you will be required to take 40 hours of training in dispatch under a certified training officer before you are allowed to be a dispatcher. “Thank you, sir,” said Rebella.
Rebella went to the detective’s office and started to open the door, but she stopped because she was very nervous about having to talk to J.P. She sat down on the bench outside trying to overcome being nervous. She was afraid that when she told J.P. that she was leaving the Special Investigation Division that he would be disappointed in her.
As Rebella sat on the bench she looked at her badge and thought about her first case when she met J.P. Bullet. She had just graduated the academy and was assigned to the 169th precinct. Officer Benny Hill was her first partner. They were working undercover on a case involving someone robbing taxi cab drivers. She remembered sitting in the taxicab. The suspect who was later identified as Larry Leary came up to the cab with a revolver. “Give me your money!” shouted Larry. Benny gave him the money and Larry took off running. She got out of the taxicab and started chasing Larry. While running down the sidewalk, he fired at her and she took cover behind some crates. She rose up to return fire but as she aimed at the suspect, she panicked and as he started to fire at her again she hide behind the crates trembling. Street patrol officer J.P. Bullet pulled up and he started firing at him. J.P. took out his service revolver and returned fire striking the suspect. He put his revolver back into the holster and went over to where Rebella was hiding. He helped her up. “I am officer J.P. Bullet,” said J.P. shaking her hand. “I am officer Rafaella Howard but everyone calls me Rebella,” said Rebella nervous at meeting someone for the first time. “It’s nice to meet you,” said J.P. “This is my first day,” said Rebella. “I can tell,” said J.P. starting to walk over to the suspect lying on the ground. He could see that Rebella was scared and lacked confidence in herself. He walked back over to her and patted her on the shoulder. “You are going to make a darn good cop one day,” said J.P.
Then Rebella started thinking about an assignment she could not complete. She remembered going talking to J.P. excepting to be suspended or getting a letter of reprimand. J.P. handed her an evaluation report and what he said when she asked him about it.
“He is not going to be disappointed in me, in fact he is going to be excited for me and Harvey,” thought Rebella as she started to gain confidence in herself. She got up and went in the detective’s office still nervous but had more confidence in herself.
“J.P., I have something to tell you,” said Rebella. “I know you are transferring to weekend dispatcher. Captain Graves just called me and told me. He also said he was going to let you tell me why you were leaving the Special Investigation Division,” said J.P. “The reason I am leaving is because I am pregnant,” said Rebella. Inspector Tina Cassidy gasped. “Oh My Gosh! I am so excited for you!” said Tina as she got out of her chair to hug her. Inspector Susie Young got up too and hugged her. Susie and Tina sat back down. J.P. stood up and went around the desk and hugged her. “Congratulations, I am very happy for you and Harvey,” said J.P.
As Rebella walked out of the detective’s office, she looked back and tears came to her eyes.
