Case 33 - The Microchip
Born 1983, M, from Atlanta,Texas, United StatesUpstate Robotics had developed a new experimental microchip, but a mad scientist wanted to get his hands on the microchip for his own benefit and would use Dowzer to try to carry out his plans. Here’s how it came down.
Inspector J.P. and Tina Bullet took Dowzer, the robotic police dog, to Upstate Robotics for a checkup to make sure all of Dowzer’s components were functioning properly. “Unless we find a glitch, Dowzer will be ready to be picked in an hour,” said Roger Oglethorpe.
Dr. Wilson Brilliant was running tests on Dowzer’s circuits. “A new experimental microchip that when it is activated will cause a robot to have emotions. I am going to make millions and you are going to help me steal it,” said Wilson, as he inserted the chip onto Dowzer’s circuit board. Wilson finished running the tests and told Dr. Oglethorpe that Dowzer was ready to be picked up. “Perfect, now all I have to do is kidnap Dowzer and the chip will be mine!” said Wilson with an evil laugh.
Tina was brushing through her hair getting ready for bed. Dowzer came into the bathroom and sat down beside her, wagging its tail. Tina set her brush down and patted Dowzer on the head. Dowzer jumped up and wrapped its leg around her and put his mouth up to Tina’s cheek. “J.P. could you come here a second?” asked Tina. JP. came into the bathroom to see what Tina wanted. He saw Dowzer still holding on to Tina. He laughed at the sight. “Dowzer, what are you doing?” asked J.P. Dowzer jumped down and went up to J.P. and started to wag its tail. J.P. patted Dowzer on the head. “Come on boy,” said J.P. Dowzer followed him out of the restroom. Tina had a confused look on her face.
Dowzer jumped on the bed and woke up J.P. and Tina. Dowzer had his leash in his mouth. “Dowzer’s internal clock must be malfunctioning,” said Tina. J.P. attached the leash to Dowzer's collar. “We are going to take Dowzer back Monday,” said J.P. He got dressed, put his holster on, and put his service revolver in the holster. “Come on boy,” said J.P. “Hold on just a minute, I will go with you,” said Tina.
Dowzer observed a person walking their dog. Dowzer started pulling at the leash wanting to go for a walk instead of going for a ride. J.P. Tina and Dowzer walked to Mid City Park. Dowzer walked up to a bench and laid down in the soft green grass. J.P. and Tina sat down on the bench.
J.P. put his arm around Tina, who was watching children playing. “That would be perfect,” said Tina. “What’s that?” asked J.P. “Me, you, Dowzer, and three or four kids,” said Tina as she put a big smile on her face.
Dowzer raised his head and observed two of Dr. Wilson’s henchman. Dowzer started barking. “What is it boy?” asked Tina. Dowzer started towards the two henchmen. Tina was holding on to Dowzer's leash as best as she could. Dowzer got loose and continued after the henchmen.
Inspector Rebella Lucas was working as weekend day shift dispatcher. She normally worked the Special Investigation Division Monday through Friday 7 A.M. until 4 P.M. However, the communication Division was short handed and there was no one to cover the weekend day shift. When Rebella thought she was pregnant, she had put in to be weekend day shift dispatcher, so Captain Graves asked her to cover the weekend shift. Harvey came into dispatch with a sack. “Here you go baby, I brought you breakfast,” said Harvey handing Rebella the sack. She took the food out of the sack and was fixing to start eating when the telephone rang. Rebella answered the phone. “169th Precinct dispatch,” said Rebella. She wrote down the information and put her hand over the receiver. “It is J.P. He is at Mid City Park and needs back up. Dowzer is after two people and may be malfunctioning,” said Rebella. Harvey sighed. “Show me enroute to back him up,” said Harvey. Rebella wrote on the log that Harvey was enroute.
Dowzer continued after the two henchmen. They got in Dr. Wilson’s green van. He was waiting on them to bring him Dowzer. “You incompetent idiots!” shouted Dr. Wilson as he started the van and drove off. Dowzer stopped as he watched the van drive off. Dowzer stood there and growled angrily.
Monday Morning J.P. and Tina took Dowzer back to UpState Robotic. “Dowzer may be malfunctioning,” said J.P. Roger pulled Dowzer’s report up on the computer. “That’s weird, the test is showing there was nothing wrong,” said Roger. He opened Dowzer and found the microchip. “Here’s the problem,” said Roger removing the microchip. “What is it?” asked Tina. “This microchip, we were experimenting to see if we could get robots to have emotions like humans. Unfortunately the cost of developing and manufacturing the chip was too great and we discontinued the experiment,” said Roger. “What are you going to do with the chip?” asked Tina. “We are going to destroy it,” said Roger. “Oh!” said Tina. J.P. looked at Tina and knew what she was thinking. “Is there anyway you could put the chip back in Dowzer?” asked J.P.
“I would be interested seeing how the chip works,” said Roger placing the microchip back on Dowzer's circuit board. He handed J.P. some forms. “I would like for you to keep a record of what Dowzer does each day and then when you bring him back for a checkup, please bring the record with you,” said Roger.
J.P., Tina and Dowzer walked out of Upstate Robotics. “Have I told you how much I love you?” said Tina, putting her arms around J.P. Dowzer sat down and started wagging its tail. Tina looked down at Dowzer. “What's the matter, boy?” asked Tina. J.P. put a smile on his face. “I think he wants me to do this,” said J.P., wrapping his arms around Tina and kissing her passionately.
