Life is good, love is better... When it works.
Born 1998, F, from Gibsons, CanadaI sit on Adam Johnsons bed, my lyric book in hand, writing furiously. He sits on the floor, strumming absently at his guitar, talking about how he wishes that we could have success in our band. I try not to snap at him, but, hello! I'm the songwriter AND the singer. I deserve a little bit of peace.
"Cassie Rivers" He muses. I look up at the sound of my name. His green eyes sparkle as he says that it is a very good 'star name'.
"Yeah? Well, we're only 15, Adam. Adults won't want us." I sigh. I'm interrupted by a loud "Hellloooooo! Adam-kins." I wrinkle my nose. Amanda Thomas, Adam's rich annoying, self-centered girlfriend. She breezes through the door, long hair sashaying down her back, grey eyes bored, smile dazzling. Her eyes focus on me, and I see a frown appear on her brow. She doesn't try to hide it.
"What are YOU doing here, Cassidy?" She sighs, and rolls her eyes.
"Well, I-Um, I..." I stutter.
Adam just looks at me, and starts talking to Amanda. I feel tears welling up in my eyes. Amanda has always hated me. Is it my beauty? I don't really have alot. My mother says I am beautiful, with a happy air about me. But when I look in the mirror, all I see is straight brown hair, blue eyes, and a ski-slope nose. Well, I guess I'm not too bad. I hide my tears, and continue writing the lyrics for our new song. Adam and I are a two person band, him usualy playing the guitar, and I singing. Sometimes I'll play the piano, but singing is my favorite.
2 hours later, and I sit at home, watching TV. A commercial comes on. But suddenly, my attention is drawn to the screen.
"Calling all young talent! If you live in Canada, then Canada Can SING may be stopping in a city near you!" It's an ad, for a famous TV show, where people sing, and perform in music. It went on to say that auditions would be held in a series of major cities around Canada, and that you had to sign up for an audition. There would be a huge audience, and it would be on several major TV stations.
I called up Adam, and we agreed. We would be going on Canada can Sing, in 2 weeks.
When I saw Adam the next day, I noticed something about him. He seemed happier, nicer, more attractive. I had an odd feeling about me. Could I be developing a crush? I shook the feeling off, and tried to ignore it. The next few days were full of practice for our song, and when auditions for Vancouver came near, Adam and I travelled there, with my mother, and his mother. (Neither of us have fathers.)
We sat in uncomfortable seats. Adam held his guitar case in his sweaty hands, I, the lyric book. Adam wore casual sort of suit, and I wore a pretty blue dress that matched my eyes. I noticed that Adam was upset. Well, of course he was, Amanda had broken up with him, saying that she "met this new guy at a party". I felt so bad for him! Pretty soon though, we were called up. The group before us was just finishing performing. I peeked out at the audience. There were about 10,000 people out there. My heart started beating, and we were called on. Adam held my hand as we walked out. It was a friendly and reassuring gesture, but when the judges asked if we were a couple, there was an awkward moment. I wanted to say yes, but we just laughed it off. So did the audience. The main judge, a professional singer, asked us what we were singing, and we told her that I had written it. Finally, we started. I have never sung so hard in my life. Adam and I often looked and smiled at each other in the song. That only made me sing better. His fingers flew over the strings, and we built up to the final note, the final chord. I felt a rising of adrenaline, and then my voice reached it, and his fingers strummed the last chord. We finished, and a silence filled the arena. And then there was clapping like you wouldn't believe. One of the judges even stood up and clapped. Finally, when the noise had died down, They started giving us the comments.
"Talented, and very young. A good mix for the next stars. For me, it is a big YES for you to go to the next round."
"Your writing is amazing, t=your guitar playing is amazing. For the next song, you'll need to be a bit different, but it is a yes for me."
I can't believe that two young people were able to make something like that. YES, YES, YES."
When we heard the comments, we screamed in laughter. And then Adam grabbed me, and KISSED ME. I was surprised, but I didn't pull back. The crowd cheered even more.
"Well," said a judge. "I guess you're a couple now.
10 years later, and life is great. I am still with Adam. We are married, and at the moment I have a little girl, and another on the way. We didn't win Canada can SING. But we got 3rd place in the entire country. We have had quite a few calls for record deals, and have decided that we will only do a few, to support our family. We do not want our children to grow up hiding from the media.
Life is Good. Love is better..... When it works.
