Of course I say yes.
Born 1998, F, from Gibsons, CanadaIt was a beautiful morning at Crystal Lake. I sat on the cabin porch, soaking up the sun, my long, tanned legs stretching out in front of me. In the summer, I loved to let my long brown hair go wild, and it grows even longer and sun bleached. Summer had just started. Most people come here for summer holidays. Not me. My mother and I live here year round. My father commutes to the city for two weeks, and then gets a week off, commutes for two weeeks, gets a week off, etc. I was home schooled. But now that it was summer, I could enjoy the thought of leaving grade 10 behind. I heard my mum call my name. "Natalie!" I didn't answer. "Natalie Brooks, get over here NOW." Uh oh. What did I do? I walked into the cabin, and I saw my mother there, her blue eyes that I had inherited blazing. She glared at me. Then she lifted up a book, a pair of jean shorts, and 3 hair ties. "What have I told you about leaving your stuff around?" Her curly blonde hair bobbed around as she walked towards me, and threw the stuff into my hands. She has very pale skin, with rosy cheeks, meaning that she burns quite easily. I am the complete opposite. Like my dad, I tan easily, and LOVE the sun. I put my stuff away, grumbling, and then changed into my bathing suit.
I knew the lake better than anyone. I had spent my whole life exploring it, and I also knew, that soon a bunch of kids my age would be pounding down to to the beach, their music floating up into our cabin. I stepped onto the beach, and sure enough there they were. There were three girls, all in skimpy bikinis, stretched out on the sand, trying unsuccessfully to tan. The guys were pulling off their shirts, preparing to run into the water at full speed. But they walked very hesitantly towards the water, and with girlish squeals, they eased themselves very carefully in. I rolled my eyes, and walked a little ways down the beach, and ran into the water at full speed, diving under. I swam along the bottom, eyes wide open, and when I came up for air, I saw that the kids were staring at me. I ignored them. Now other people were starting to come onto the beach, everything from little kids to old couples. Most were visiting. A few were staying at the beach, in rented out cabins. I swam to the little floating dock, a ways out, and easliy pulled myself up onto it, and lay down. I soaked up the sun, loving the peace, and then I heard splashing and felt water on me, and heard laughter. The boys were right next to the dock, trying to get up. I looked at them. They looked at me. Finally, one of them, a boy with brown hair and green eyes, asked, "How do you get up?". I stared at him. "Um, maybe the ladder?" I said it sarcastically, and the guys laughed, and punched him playfully. One of them stared at me thoughtfully. All I saw were his hazel eyes. But I shook off the feeling.
They all joined me on the small dock. Pretty soon though, they got bored. They learned that I lived there, so they asked, "What do you do for fun around here?". I almost felt the grin lighting up my face. "Follow me!"
I led them to the cliffs. They aren't really really high. But they are scary, and I was one of the few people who actually liked to do it, because I am what you would call a dare devil. They looked at me. I noticed the guy with the hazel eyes grined. So I jumped, falling down down down, and into the water. I heared the girls squeal, and when I came up for air, they clapped. I climbed back up the cliff. Finally the four guys jumped. First, it was Hazel Eyes. Then the rest followed. I sat and watched, away from the girls. The guys kept on jumping. Except Hazel Eyes. He introduced himself as Jake Hudson. And I told him my name. Natalie Brooks. From then on, we were good friends.
The rest of the summer passed quickly. I started to Like Jake more and more. Soon I was pretty sure I was in love with him. And then summer ended. He lived in the city. He gave me a hug and said he would be back in the summer, and gave me his number. I grinned, but inside, I was dying. Jake would be gone for another 9 months! But one day, in November, I went to the city with my dad. I wanted to go for just one day, and look around. I had forgotten about Jake's number. My dad went to work, and I walked around part of the city. It was a Saturday, and busy. I walked by a group of guys. They whistled. I turned around and glared. "Leave me alone, idiots." And they did. I walked hastily into a nearby Pizza Parlour. It was small, and cute. And it smelled good. I sat down at a table, waiting for someone to come and take my order. It wasn't long, I heard a voice say, "And what can I get you today?" I looked up, and found myself staring into hazel eyes.
Jake and I were walking along the street, our hands brushing together as we walked. He had taken the rest of the day off. We walked past the same group of guys, and they whistled yet again. I was just about to open my mouth, and let loose a certain word, when Jake turned and snapped. "Leave her alone, idiots. Lay one finger on her, and some friends of mine could do some damage." We turned, and he winked. I couldn't help but laugh. Looking at my watch, I saw that I still had a few hours left. Jake and I spent the whole day together. When it was time for me to leave, I nearly cried. Actually, I did. We were standing in front of my dad's work place. Jake saw my tears, and smiled, lifted my chin with his hand, and kissed me. When we finished, he looked at me, and I knew that everything would be all right.
A couple years later, and Jake and I are finished college (we went to the same one). We have been dating for four years. I got a call from him last night, and right now, I'm walking to the park to meet him. I see him there, standing, looking nervous. And then, he pops the question. "Natalie, will you marry me?"
I say no.
Just kidding! Of course I say yes.
