>>>Morning, 10:03 AM

It’s morning. Some people do wait for this day every year. It’s Valentine’s morning, exactly. Valentine’s day is on the 14th but to wish your beloved one exactly on the 14th this 13th morning is hopefully special. The atmosphere seems so romantic, but this is all holy crap for Mark. He doesn’t believe in this Valentine stuff. And as usual he woke up late. He is skipping school today.

Well I guess he is tired of seeing the couples having romance all over the school campus.

>>>10:38 AM

But wait... today he is not following his routine. Instead of getting ready for game shop, where he often hangs out and also passes time when he wishes to skip school, he is in the kitchen to help his mom after breakfast.

Something big is planned inside his brain.

“Hey mom, need any help?” Mark asks with a big smile.
“No thanks son, I will do it by myself like everyday”, she replies calmly.
“Well, I want to help you a bit for a favor.”
“How much money you need?”
“No mom, I will ask money when I need it. I need a suggestion for something else”
“Okay, continue.”
“Mom, remember Jenifer? “
“Yah, you said your best friend, who came in your birthday?”
“Yah, that’s her.”
“Okay, what happened?” she asks curiously.
“Well mom I guess I Love her”

Mark’s mom was washing the dishes, and as she heard what Mark said; her hand paused. Mark is afraid but he dared to say it to his mom, courageous enough.

“Are you serious? Then tell her that," she replies with a smile.
“But mom there is a problem”
“What is it? She got a boyfriend?”
“Well no”
“Then what my son?”
“It sounds very desperate I know. She thinks I am her best friend. I am kind of busted in friend zone and I don’t know how to break it and make her feel we can be more then friends. You know mom I don’t believe in this love and all, but I don’t know, since the last year I am dying inside and I have no one closer than you to express my situation”

Well Mark is in love, it’s hard to believe. Mark is one of the different guys in the school who never had any girlfriend and no female friends except Jenifer. He is handsome but not that much, but his attitude is what impresses the girls. Even someone cracked a joke that Mark is a gay, whatever.

“So, this Valentine’s day, you want to propose to her?"
“Yes, exactly and i.e. also at 12 am.”
“Are you mad?” she asks making her eyes big.
“Mom, girls like surprises. I will go to her quarter and meet her. This is not the first time; last year on Valentine’s Day I went to her house at 12 am when she was kind of upset with something”
“I never knew that!!” his mom replies back with surprise.
“Sorry, now please help me”
“It will be good if you go and explain how you feel, but with that you must take flowers and gift. Won't it be weird at midnight carrying those things?”
“Actually I've got a friend in her quarter. I will stay in his house; I will leave at 10 pm.”
“Okay, that’s your problem...”
‘’Thanks mom, but I am confused, what should I give while proposing?”
“What is she fascinated about all time?”
“Edward of Twilight”

HaHaHaHa, I wonder wh all girls likes him so much. It’s really strange, is he so handsome!!!!"

“I don’t know how it will be for a proposing gift, but why don’t you gift her the full series of Twilight.”
“The movie?”
“No, books.“
“But mom, I guess it will be costly”
“Oh, then why am I your mom?”
“Mom, you are going to help me get those?”
“Sure my son, anyway am getting late for university. Stay at home, I will bring the flowers and the gift packed. Okay?”
“You are the best mom.” Mark tightly hugged his mom.

Well emotions are attached. He is lucky enough to have such a understanding mom.

As Mark’s mom left for university, Mark had nothing to do, but only to think about her. As he played some soft tracks, that Mark hardly listens to.

He is kind of a Metal music freak.

Some flashbacks made him laugh out. Well don’t worry, those flashbacks are the heart of this story.


Class X Board Exam, 2010

It’s the first subject; all the candidates are revising for the last time. Well Mark is also having a bit of a revise. As the bell rings everybody rushes towards the hall. Suddenly one girl caught Mark’s eyes. Not because she was beautiful but cause she was in an expression that was completely laughable. Yes no doubt that’s Jenifer, and it’s the first time Mark saw her. Well Mark didn’t expect to see her again but maybe fate wanted to make them meet.

As Mark entered the hall, he was surprised enough to find no seat is empty. He checked his admit and also seating arrangement drawn on board. And he figured out the girl he was staring at before entering the examination centre was sitting in his place. What the f**k is she doing in my seat? exclaimed Mark. He approached towards her.

“Excuse me?”, Mark asks calmly.

But she doesn’t even care. She was just uttering some stuff alone. Mark increased his volume.

“Excuse me!”
“Excuse you? Why should I?” she replies rudely.

Mark was stunned by her behavior, how she can behave so rudely with a stranger.

“Will you mind giving me my seat, where you are sitting?”, replies back Mark too rudely.
“What do you mean?” she replies with shock.
“You are in the wrong hall, I will be glad if you find your own hall. If you want, I can help. By the way are you a candidate of X or XII? The person who mistakes to find out her hall, who knows she may forget exam date“ added Mark.

Ouuch, that’s damn insulting in front of all the candidates.

“How you can be so confident? May be you are mistaken?”, she replied back.
“Well look around and see if you know anyone of these candidates in the hall.”

And this thing has just stroked in her brain, yes she doesn’t know anyone and after all the School dress is also not the same. How she can be so absent minded? She had no words to reply back then standing up and preparing to leave.

“Shit happens. Chill, your hall is just after two rooms from this hall.“ Added Mark.

She was ashamed she behaved so rudely with this innocent guy. She had no choice than simply nodding.

“Best of luck, calm down.” Mark whispered as she was leaving.

She acted like she didn’t care for Mark’s words and left.

This is how Mark met Jenifer. Not a good beginning though.

After exam was over, Mark saw the same girl standing and waiting for somebody at the exit. As he walked towards the exit, suddenly he felt like someone had called him.

“Excuse me“, a sweet cute tone came from side.

That’s the girl.

“Yes”, replies Mark surprisingly.

“I am extremely sorry for whatever happened in the hall. Actually I was kind of lost in some problems. Thanks for instructing me to my hall and also for the wish.”

Mark was surprised by seeing the girl talking to him so calmly.

“No problem, as I said shit happens”, mark replied calmly in his regular attitude.

“Would you mind accompanying me up to my car?”
“Sure”.
“So you are from RKMV?”
“My school dress defines that hopefully”
“Hmmmm, do you always speak in such way?”

What does she mean? Am I telling her something wrong or am I behaving rudely, again. Mark got confused.

“Like?”
“Like with attitude, that signifies you are not interested to speak with me“
“That’s not true, it’s my way and I don’t care if the person is taking the way”
“That’s bad”

Common, I have met this girl 3 hours back and she is telling me I speak in a bad way on my face. Who the hell is she, does she think?

Before Mark could reply anything, she added,
“I guess I am the first person to tell you that hah?”

How the hell does she know that, is she some kind of vampire reading my mind. Common give me a break.

“Kind of”
“Well take my advice, be semi-friendly, all will like you”
“Who dislikes me? And how do you know?”
“I was asking around about you, and all explained to me you are a kind of person with too much attitude. Seems they don’t like you.”
“And I don’t care about it”
“Common, you can’t be so rude”

For the first time Mark is feeling uncomfortable after replying back to someone in his style.

“Okay, I will change my style, but why you were so absent minded, I observed you in the morning also. You were kind of pissed off”
“Well, I requested my dad to drop me till exam centre, but he was kind of Mr. Busy and he didn’t come.”
“Busy man may be, you must understand”
“Well at least, when his daughter is giving exam he needs to understand that. It Seems like he doesn’t even care.”

This fact matched up with Mark too. His dad also always keeps on going outside the city for business matters and he hardly speaks with him. Even his mom quarrels with him often regarding giving less time to family.

“Earning money for the family, doesn’t mean they won’t make time for family”, Mark speaks out slowly.
“Did you pass with same thing?”
“Yeah, something like that. My mom dropped me but my dad is now outside the city, he hardly stays here”
“Argh ! That’s sad.”
“At least you can see your dad every day.” replies Mark laughing a bit.

Soon they reached the car parking place. It was clear they both liked each other and enjoyed a lot spending a few minutes in conversation and may be wishing to hang on for more.

“Well then, see you in next exam……. By the way what is your name? I am Jenifer. Jen for friends”, added Jenifer.
“It’s Mark, Mark for friends.” Replies Mark with a smile.
“Okay, tata, see you soon”
“See you”

She entered the car and left waving hand, with a smile in her face. Mark couldn’t believe that he talked with that girl in such a friendly way that he never does!

Mark woke up by the ringtone and received the call without seeing who it is.

“Hey, Mark”, its Jen
“Hey, Jen…”
“Sleeping?”
“Kind of, don’t know when I passed out, was listening to some tracks.”
“Okay, should I call you later?”
“No, say anything important?”
“What’s your plan for evening?”
“Need to stay at home. Mom is going to return a bit later, why?”
“Well, I was willing to hang out with you.”
‘‘Missing your dream boy?”
“hehehe, yah. How you know that?”
“I am your best friend; you think I can’t feel your problem”
“True, okay am keeping in low bah…..”

The line got disconnected. Balance may be over. Damn it, this house keeper thing has made me tell no to the chance of spending time with her on such a romantic day.

(Message tone rings)

“Hey balance over. See you tomorrow at school”
“Okay…..” Mark replies back.

Mark was sleepy and again he got back to sleep.

Hopefully all knew how Mark and Jen came to know each other. And it’s pretty sure they met all the exam days and exchanged no's and thus joined same school after board exam result. But surprisingly that’s not true. As they met all the days during exam, the walk towards the car seemed like they both wanted to do every time. In only six days they became close enough and good friends. But unluckily Jen wasn’t having any no. but she took Mark’s no and rang him sometimes from her mom’s phone and even hung out once. But as Mark wasn’t intentionally in any state of falling in love, that never happened. Still in 3 months the relationship did transform into strong bond of friendship.

It was result day. Mark passed the exam with some 75% marks and his mom was happy enough. But Jen scored 87% and knowing it Mark was a bit ashamed of the mark. Still he tried to act satisfied with the marks in front of Jen.

“87! How'd you score such huge? Don’t you do anything else than reading books?”, Mark asks in a curious tone.
“hahahaha, not exactly. I just study when I need to, and with some miracles may be.”, says Jen with a huge smile.
“So, joining which school? You will get chance in any school. I am applying for JVBS as it allows students with less marks in science stream.”
“Well, I am leaving for Chennai, actually. I will go for diploma course.”

As Mark heard it, he doesn’t know what happened and he was just getting angry. Why the hell is he supposed to be angry, is it because she is moving to Chennai? Mark controlled his emotions…

“Wow, great, will miss you. I am getting late, need to leave, bye, see you"
“Oh...Okay...ah”, before she could complete her sentence Mark calls out for a rickshaw and left. Who knows, this is the last time Mark is seeing her, as she wanted to say she is leaving tomorrow evening and she wants to invite him with family for lunch at her place. She completely got horrified with Mark’s behavior and all know when a girl becomes angry what happens. For sure she could call him from her mom’s phone or landline, but she didn’t. As she was damn angry and Mark was in pain but the pain didn’t last for long. As it was just a short lived memory for him. But now you may be thinking how they met each other? Well may be again fate played its role.

After joining JVBS, Mark started to skip schools and bunk classes continuously and play game in game shop. He is not interested in science stuff. He dreams to follow his mother’s footsteps but it was kind of impossible for his Hitler dad. But it was just after the summer vacation when he saw Jen in his class.

“Hey, what the hell you doing in my class?”, surprisingly Mark asks.
“Does this class only belong to you?”, Jen replies back rudely.
“I am sorry, I couldn’t come to see you when you left, but what happened, why you are back?”
“Do you know when I left?”
“Yeah, the next evening you met me.”
“How?”
“I have a friend residing in your quarter, he told me.”
“Still you didn’t come?”
“I was busy with my mom.”
“Okay, will tell you why I am here in recess”
“Okay.”

That’s how again fate has brought them together. As he asked her the reason, she told him she couldn’t adjust to the temperature and also the food. So from that day their friendship got started again. Everyone used to pretend they were a couple but they all get shocked when they hear they are just friends.


So after a boring long day the time has finally arrived when Mark will express his love for Jen. He sent her a text to open the door. Jen opened and took him in her room silently.

“Mark!!! What are you doing here at this time?”
“Jen, I have these gifts for you for Valentine’s day”
“But why do you need to give them exactly at 12? You know though my parents won’t say anything, but the neighbors will say nah?”
“Well I wanted to give them at the right moment”
“Okay, whatever, anything else you want to say?”
“Remember the first day we met? I had a feeling for you when I first saw you in pissed off expression”
“That’s so sweet of you! I know I was looking ugly“
“No, you were looking cute, and as we met via our fate I have felt that you are now one of my most important part of my life. I never felt such deep feelings for anyone in my life. Seems like your company is more than enough to live this life.”
“Owow…I am glad to have you as my friend, Mark that’s so sweet of you. Even you are an important part of my life”
“Listen Jen, I think we can be more than that. I think I love you Jen.”

The smile in Jen’s face got disappeared.

Oh my God, what the f**k is going to happen. Is she is angry? She kept on staring on him.

Mark was only staring at the floor, he is afraid it clearly can be seen in his face. But suddenly Jen smiled back again. But it wasn’t enough to satisfy Mark.

“Look Mark, that’s really sweet of you, expressing how you feel for me, but I never have seen you in that way. I do love you in the eye of a good friend, cause sometimes you need to have someone to share the pain. And you have been that person and I never want to lose you.”

Mark nodded simply. He has no strength to protest back. His eyes couldn’t control the tears.

(Phone Rings) This is an invitation…….

Mark woke up suddenly. And he checks the phone. it’s his mom.

“Hey mom”
“What are you doing? I have been calling since long time“
“Just was taking a nap mom”
“Have lunch in time, and chill, don’t panic so much”
“Yeah mom, love you…see you in eve.”
“Bye son”

So that was a dream equivalent to nightmare that Mark saw. Thank god that was only a dream.

>>>3:15 PM

Mark was clearly scared and tensed. If this happens in reality, can he face it? Should he drop the idea of proposing to her? Mark is confused a lot, even he is not having lunch properly, as he was chewing only rice, he forgot to take dishes from freezer. Clearly, the attitude king is now a pest in this situation. As the evening drowning, it seems the clock is moving slowly today. Patience was out of Mark’s hand. He today doesn’t have anything instead of waiting for the time. Simply he was lost in different world. Yes some sort of flashback again...

It was Valentine’s Day 2011; Mark was busy in reading Novel. Suddenly the phone started to ring. Who can call at this midnight, wondered Mark. It’s Jen, what the hell!

“Hey Jen, say…”

There was silence, and it seemed like Jen was crying. Her voice was completely mixed with weeping.

“Hey what happened, are you all right?” asks Mark in tensed tone.
“Can you come over to my place Mark, now?”
“Now, at this midnight? Won't that be risky?” added Mark.
“I don’t know, I need you now, please”
“Okay, hold on, I am coming”

Jen disconnected the line. Mark is surprised and shocked. how will he go so far at this midnight. Well there is no mode of transport so he has to move on by walking. Damn it! It’s risky at this midnight. But Mark was afraid for Jen; so he quickly moved out of the house and left for Jen’s place.

Exactly at 12:45 am Mark reached Jen’s place. She was red faced with tears rolling like anything. She was completely broken and she hugged Mark tightly. Mark hugged and consoled her.

“Hey what is wrong? What happened?”

Jen was weeping a lot, she kept on crying for nearly ten minutes hugging Mark. Slowly she speaks out.

“I love someone Mark, but he till now didn’t realize it. He is an idiot. I always try to make him understand how much I care for him. But he never ever wanted to have a look how I feel for him.”

Mark was completely an alien in these cases because he doesn’t even care what love is. He was just nodding his head as she kept on describing about how she feels, blah blah, but the thing that was kind of amazing is he came to her house at this midnight and didn’t even think to ask who is that guy. He kept on consoling her and saying that guy will sure realize one day. And now Mark is wondering, if he would propose to her on that day...what could be the present condition! He is missing that tight hug, of Jen.

This is really pathetic.

Everything seems to be boring now. Mark is waiting for his mom eagerly.

(Door Bell Rings) Ding Dong

Mark opened the door and he seemed quite excited to see his mom with a huge packet.

“Wow...mom I was just thinking about you“
“Oh, son, I got late in searching for your gift in book stores”
“You found it nah?”
“Well yes and I have added another thing. I bought the original DVD’s of Twilight movie up to Breaking Dawn Part I“
“Common mom, why!? The books were more than enough?” says Mark as he kept on looking at the stuff she bought.
“What is there my son; I want to make her know how much my son loves her”
“You are the best mom.”

As she entered the kitchen, Mark followed her.
“Mom, you take a rest and let me cook today, as dad is not here, the quality won’t matter.”
“No son, I will cook your Dad’s favorite dish today”
“Dad is coming?”
“Yah, he will reach by 10“
“Hmmm….mom you love dad a lot hah?”
“Enough, now go and pack your gifts and let me start working, it’s already 8“
“Okay mom, I will leave before dad reaches. Waiting for the dinner”
“Okay I will make sure that you have dinner before you leave, now go, don’t disturb me with your puzzled questions”

Mark left the kitchen. He can feel how much his mom loves his dad. As she just returned from tiresome day and without resting she entered kitchen. And he even noticed a gift packed and kept separately, hopefully that’s the gift for dad. As mark started to pack the gifts with wrappers he again got back to flashbacks of the moments that are now making him realize he loves her.

Mark always used to bunk classes. He could never resist more than 4 periods and he used to skip school also. During the form fill up for admit card a student needs to have minimum 75% of attendance. But every year students with low percentage also used to fill up forms but this year during that phase, the school got a new principal, and Mark was very much scared about it. As near 10 students were instructed to come to school next day with their parents. Mark knew he was also going to be in that category but surprisingly he was not in that category, but he was greeted by teacher as he got 85% of attendance. After form fill up he went to tell Jen about this miracle.

“Hey Jen do you know what happened?”
“Yah, you got saved from guardian call for low attendance as you have more than the needed attendance”
“Exactly! It happened with you too?”
“Yah…. anyway I am getting late. I have to go somewhere with Pinky”
“Okay, see you then”

Mark was so excited and he couldn’t hide it. he had to share it with his friends too.
“Kavir, do you know what happened?”
“What?”
“Man, I am off from guardian call“
“Are you kidding me? you never attend school !!!”, surprisingly John speaks out.
“Yes my friend, I am lucky enough, always miracles happen with me.”
“Always? Anything else happened with you?”, again John asks.
“Yah, I forgot to draw images in biology practical, but I found out I got 29 out of 30. Does anyone give you full mark without drawing?” laughs out Mark.
‘You are a lucky man, wish it would happen with me”
“You are lucky cause you have your girlfriend”, suddenly Kavir speaks out.
‘Girlfriend? Who is my girlfriend?”, Mark asks surprisingly !
“Jenifer”
“What? We are just best friends man, who the f*ck told you I am her boyfriend.”
“Really then God knows why she use to give your attendance every day, and even replaced your practical copy of biology completing them.”
“What the hell are you talking about?”
“Yah, I was the one who helped her in finding out your copy”
“Why you didn’t tell me?”
“She made me to promise, so…sorry”
“F*ck you man, see you guys around, I have to talk to her, bye”

Why did she help me and she didn’t even mention about it. She cares for me so much! She really thinks I am her best friend. I must return this favor of her with surprise. After this Mark surprised her by gifting her teddy bear for saving him from so many troubles. Mark had already started to have some feelings for her, but every time he remembers the Valentine’s night, where she expressed her love for someone else and may be this was the reason why he kept on controlling himself from proposing to her.


>>>9:15 PM

“Dinner is ready Mark”
“Coming mom!”
“So, you sure you will do this tonight?”
“Yes mom, I guess! I need to do it tonight, because I still remember last year’s Valentine night. She was upset with someone. I don’t want to lose her before it’s too late. Whatever happens I must say it mom.”
“Okay son, I hope everything will be fine”

It's 9:45 PM, Mark left for Kavir’s place. On the way he texts Jen.

“Hey, you there? I am coming to Kavir’s place. Meet me at midnight.”

No reply! Mark is tensed, what’s wrong, as per his idea she is not having any boyfriend! But no one exactly can figure out information about girls.

Wish I could, and then I could have impressed all the pretty girls.

Mark kept on waiting hoping for a reply and after nearly 10 minutes she replies.

“Sorry, was having dinner. Really you are going to spend the time with me?”
“Yes, I will be there. I am about to reach you“
“Thanks for understanding me, I miss him a lot. At least your presence will support me.”

What the f*ck did she say! She still loves that guy? And what am I doing with these gifts! Should I throw them away? No, I must face this and do my job. I will do it, I can do it.

>>>10:30 pm

(Door Bell Rings) Ding Dong ….

Kavir opens the door..
“Hey man perfectly on time hah?”
“Yah man I am so excited”
“Come in”

Suddenly Kavir’s mom came up,
‘’Hey Mark, how are you?”
“I am doing great Rinu aunty”
“Aha ? You going to propose to someone today?” she asks with a smile.

Mark’s face turned into red. He is shy and he is surprised how she knows.
“Kavir told me about your plan, don’t worry just be careful. Don’t make any noise”
“Yah, aunty”, mark replies calmly.

“F*cker, who the hell told you to say it to your mom?”
“Man, she is helping remember! Isn’t it strange to invite a friend on Valentine’s night? So I couldn’t hide”
“Okay whatever! I am scared”

AS they entered Kavir’s room, Mark was surprised to see John also!
“What the hell are you doing,” Mark asks John shockingly.
“Man, I am also helping you!”, replies John
“How?”
“You have to rehearse!”
“What?”
“How to propose to Jenifer”
“Common I don’t need your help asshole”
“Man, you should copy the dialogues from romantic movies, she is kind of filmy, you will be easily able to impress!”
“As if she does miss any single romantic movie! I will get caught”
“Okay then common you make your own words”
“Okay, I may do that“

Mark kept on making different dialogues with different expressions. Suddenly he remembered the dream he saw today afternoon and he decided to say the same.

“Hey man just 5 minutes to go“
“I know, I am going now”
“Should we accompany you?”
“No thanks”
“Man at least you give us a hug”

Mark hugged Kavir and John strongly. Three friends forever, from nursery this three have been friends. And it’s kind of emotional too…

>>>12:03 AM

Jen opened the door slowly and took Mark to her room.
“What are those things Mark?”
“I brought them for you as Valentine’s gift”
“Wow...Really no one ever gifted me like this; you are really the best friend ever I got.”
“Well I want to say something”
“Sure”, replies Jena as she unpacked the gifts.
“Well it’s about …”, before Mark could finish his words.
“Wow, you brought me the whole Twilight series in Books and also in movies!”
“This is the best gift ever I got”, added Jen before Mark could continue.
“You were saying something Mark”, exclaimed Jen.

The smile on her face was so bright, it made Mark confused. If he proposes to her right now the smile may disappear? Mark kept silent for a few minutes while Jen kept on looking at the books. Mark stood up and said, “I love you Jen”

Finally Mark said it. Jen surprisingly looked at Mark. She is not having the smile. Mark looked in her eyes. They were turning wet.
“I don’t know how you feel about me Jen, but I have feelings for you. It Seems like your presence has made my life easier. Your smile, your anger, your everything makes me feel like I am in heaven. I always tried to express it but I couldn’t. I don’t want to lose you, but I guess I couldn’t control myself. I would be happy if you give a chance to me, I will always be with you as shadow. And….umm”

Before Mark could continue, Jen pulled Mark towards her…and kissed him. Mark was in a condition of what to do. He was simply shocked.
“Did you never kiss any girl?” asks Jen hugging Mark tightly
“No’, replies blushing Mark.
“Why you are so late?”
“I am sorry”
“You know I returned from Chennai only for you, still you never figured it out“
“And also the guy I love is You! You never asked who is he, idiot, I thought to propose to you previous year, but you didn’t even ask who is he; I had to cry for so long. My eyes pained a lot, I used too many onions”, Mark and Jen burst out in laughter……and Jen slowly uttered… ”I love you too Mark”. Mark kissed her……….
“I guess I should leave, it’s near 2 am, and am afraid if Kavir and John slept”
“Okay, baby, we will hang out tomorrow evening then”
“Common, I am not your baby! Anyway we will”

Jen followed Mark up to the door……..and suddenly someone turned on the light…….

“Wake Up, Mark! You have to go to school! its already 10 am. Wake up!“ screamed out Mark’s mom as she kept opening the window.

Yes, Mark was dreaming.

He quickly dressed up and left for the school. As Mark reached school he saw Jen standing like every day in the assembly hall…beautifully dressed …. As she saw Mark...She came towards him...
