Lucinda was born late at night on May 6th and the doctor diagnosed her with a rare disease called emotions. This disease caused the child to have a strange unknown thing called feelings.
“Oh, doctor, how will she live with a disease like that?” Lucinda’s mother Cecile asked the young doctor.
“Well her life will be terrible, but she might be able to live like any other child,” the doctor said hoping to reassure the mother.
“I hope so,” She said watching as the child with her brown hair and eyes slept peacefully in her arms.
Years later Lucinda’s parents tried their hardest to keep the truth from her and everyone else, but beside their best efforts everyone knew she was different, even Luce herself.
She knew that everyone stared at her as if she had grown a second head every time she laughed or cried. She knew her parents were only trying to help her but them lying to her only made her feel worse.
As she grew older, it came to the point where her old doctors couldn’t help her, and by the time she was sixteen she went through twelve different doctors. Finally, they managed to find one young doctor who’s name was Blake Perri, and he was specially trained to help people with the rare disease. After a year of being with him, Luce already liked him better than all the other doctors.
“Doctor, I know that it isn’t time for my usual check up yet, but there’s something I need to ask you,” She began, as she looked into his serious yet gentle brown eyes, “I don’t know what it is, but every time I’m around this boy my cheeks heat up and my heart begins to race. Is there something wrong with me?”
“No, Luce, there is nothing wrong with you,” He reassured her as he brushed away a lock of his brown hair from his eyes, “What you're feeling is something called ‘Love’,” he said with a hint of something, a feeling maybe, in his voice.
“Is it a good or a bad thing?” she asked as she remembered all the other feelings she was introduced to over the years.
“Well, the thing about this feeling is that it can lead to both happiness and pain,” he sat down next to her, “Happiness is a good feeling but pain is the worst of them all so it’s very hard to tell.”
“Well what do I do with this ‘love’?” she asked desperately.
“You say it’s a boy you feel this for, correct?” she nodded, “And of course this boy can’t feel the same for you, but you can at least see if this boy will accept your feelings,” he suggested, that tone or feeling back in his voice.
“I’ll try, thank you so much doctor.”
“Please call me Blake, we’ve known each other long enough, and I really do hope that boy won’t hurt you Luce,” he said softly, grabbing one of her hands.
Suddenly, that feeling came back, that feeling of love and it overwhelmed her. Looking at the doctor she has cared for more than anybody, it made her feel alone, as if she was a freak.
Saying a quick goodbye, Luce ran out the door and didn’t look back. After that, she just gave up on trying to find help altogether.
A few days later, she explained to the boy how she felt. He accepted her, and they were together for a long time, they even got married. Years later though, he cheated on her, introducing her to the pain Blake had warned her about.
Heartbroken, Luce went to find her old doctor, hoping for comfort or promises that everything will be better like he always did, only to find out he had left the town years ago.
“He’s gone,” the old nurse told her, “He went to a special hospital to deal with a disease he had called emotions.”
“When did he leave?” she asked her trying to hold back her tears.
“Three years ago, I think, around early October,” she answered tapping her chin thoughtfully.
“October twenty-first" she offered, dread filling her heart.
“Yeah that’s it, how did you know that?” the old lady asked as Luce walked away.
Different feelings she couldn’t explain filled her. She tried to make sense of what she was feeling as she went to the last place she could go, back home with her parents.
“What’s wrong honey?” her mother asked her, but honestly she hoped her daughter wouldn’t reply, not knowing how to assist her strange child.
“I think I just lost someone important to me,” she replied, her head buried in a pillow.
“Why do think that?” she asked, curious about who could be so important. She knew her daughter’s relationship would never work out, seeing as how she was so different.
“He showed me that he cared and I just ran away,” she mumbled, and then began to wonder why she did.
“Maybe it’s better off that way. Maybe now you can be like any other normal person,” the mother said not even trying to hide the hope in her voice.
That’s when she realized it, when she realized why she did what she did. She wanted to be normal, but now she was just angry. “What does it matter if I’m different?! He was too and he didn’t care about how anyone thought, he still cared about me.”
“Who are you talking about honey?” she asked, taking a step back, surprised by her daughters anger.
“It’s because of people like you that I’m afraid to open up, to be me, when there is nothing wrong with me. It’s because of the insecurity that you filled me with that I turned away from him, from Blake, and you know what, I’ve had it,” She fumed then stormed out of the room, out of the house.
“Your doctor?” the mom said, puzzled, even though her daughter was already long gone.
Luce later entered the same hospital as Blake to try and be with him, and even though they treated the both of them terribly, Luce didn’t let it get to her anymore. Nothing could change how she felt and who she was.

06/08/2019It seems to be a very strange but interesting world you've created in your short story, Bianca. Kind of like a future place in which all human emotions have been rooted out, except for a few who were immune to whatever methods were used. It makes for a very intriguing 'love story' in a science fiction sort of setting. I think a lot of great short stories could be written about the people and situations in this world, and how those with emotions are able to survive in such an emotionless world. This story could be the beginning of a novel or a collection of stories. Anyway, well done. Thanks for sharing your short story on Storystar.
