Wanting

By Omar Martinez
Born 1999, from Brownsville, Texas, United States
View Author Profile

In the small town of somewhere, a man named Toby, with nothing but his home and family, lived a life of wanting. If he liked something he’d lie, cheat, and steal just to get it. His family knew nothing of his thievery and they loved Toby, who would trade them for money. Toby hit the jackpot when he stole a business man’s wallet. The man had just gotten out of a gas station and he pick-pocketed the man’s wallet and evaded his sight. The old leather wallet’s contents were a crumpled up faded five-dollar bill, a Chase Liquid credit card, and a twenty-dollar gift-card to Target. The man kept the money and failed at hacking the man’s bank account. The Target card was already used as well, but behind the target card Toby found a crumpled up lotto ticket with the numbers 5, 7, 13, 20, and 30. Toby took the ticket and decided there was nothing to lose. He went to www.lottosomewhere.com to check if he had won maybe the 2 pair which was twenty-dollars. Keep in mind most of his stuff wasn’t exactly top notch…or his. While his computer, that was older than the dinosaurs, loaded, he doubted even matching one number. Then half of his screen loaded, he could see the 5, and 7. He chuckled for doubting himself and was about to leave the monitor when two more numbers appeared. now he could see the 5 and 20. Toby jumped with glee and impatiently waited to see what the last number would be. Finally, his dinosaur of a computer loaded to show a 30. The man froze. He couldn’t believe his eyes. A man with nothing won twenty-six million dollars! After he regained his senses he jumped up and down yelling “I’m a MILLIONAIRE! wait no, A MULTI-MILLIONAIRE!” He was so loud his wife, Jessica, and children, Tammy and Tommy awoke and jumped up and down with their father as well. They had the money transferred to Toby’s bank account.

The man went on a spending spree and bought everything in sight, with millions of dollars to spare. Jessica had a joint bank account with Toby and you’d think Toby would be very hospitable right? WRONG! Toby cancelled Jessica’s account the day he got his money and changed the PIN!

Jessica went to a gas station one day and saw a lowly hobo sitting in front, crying. What Jessica didn’t know was that it was the business man and she gave what little money she’d earned herself. After that he asked if she had seen a wallet that matched Toby’s wallet, and they then called the cops and had Toby arrested and the money transferred to the business man’s account.

Now Toby had nothing and no one. The warden released Toby and said “Somebody paid bail, you're free to go.” Toby walked out to see his wife and kids wearing expensive high fashion clothing with a limo behind them. They entered and were all driven around, but their children went in a different limo while Jessica and Toby spoke. Jessica said, “You kicked us out when you had more than enough money to last 2 generations…”
“I know, why did you help me then?” Toby said. She said “Because I love you and I want to help.” “Oh…” They arrived at their new pent-house and then Toby sat in the lap of luxury. Toby realized he could have been left to rot in jail. Toby finally realized he was lucky to have what he has now and he never took anything for granted ever again.
