Another Point of View
Born 2000, F, from Texas, United States“Hey Gabby!” Brooklyn called. She waved me over to our usual lunch table where she was sitting with Alexis. Lots of people were already crowding around my friends. As I sat down hurriedly, Alexis burst out with the latest gossip. “Mary likes your boyfriend, Gabby! Mary’s SO not Josh’s type,” she gushed. People oohed and aahed.
I shrugged. “Let her be! I’ll just find another one then…” I trailed off, seeing the looks on Brooklyn, Alexis and Bianca’s faces. “Gabriella! Why do you always have to let other people rule over you? If Josh were MY boyfriend, I would get revenge on Mary! Mary’s SO easy to target on,” Bianca rolled her eyes.
“You guys can help me, right? I don’t have really good ideas,” I said, taking a bite of my turkey wrap. “Anyway, I have to go for singing audition. I really wanna get chosen to sing for the concert.” I got up and raced to the auditioning room, eating my food on the way.
Finally, my turn came. My song was Tell Me Something I Don’t Know, sung by Selena Gomez. As I sang my part and courage filled me, I saw the teachers with smiles on their faces, and they were nodding at each other. I grinned inside. I finished, and a teacher told me, “Gabriella, you have amazing talent. You’re on!”
When I headed for the clique’s meeting place, the restaurant Dairy Galz to share my news, Brooklyn stared at me. “Gabriella, I don’t think you’re meant to be in our clique. All of us are out-going and you’re just the goody-goody who saves us out of trouble occasionally,” she said with a blank look on her face.
I rolled my eyes. I knew I had to save myself, and the girls had never called me Gabriella before. “C’mon guys, big deal! You need me. And I got a part for the concert.” I tried to act like I didn’t care whether I got a part or not, but Alexis saw right through me.
“Look, we can’t stand you, ok? That’s what Brooklyn’s trying to say! In fact, we’ll give you another chance. Go and get revenge on Mary,” Alexis said through clenched teeth. I backed away and raced home. I didn’t understand why they had to get revenge on Mary. After all, Josh was MY boyfriend, not theirs.
Concert day finally rolled by. I wore a green hair band, with a sparkly blue dress and purple tights, a scarf and brown boots to go with. I knew the clique would detest my outfit, but I knew that this was me and I loved it. I was singing solo onstage and I was the first programme!
As I stepped onstage, the crowd cheered and I overcame my stage fright. I saw that Brooklyn, Alexis and Bianca were sitting in the fifth row by the side.
“Everybody tells me that
It's so hard to make it
It's so hard to break in
There's no way to fake it…”
I sang my heart out. Then I continued as I walked down the aisle.
“I hear it everyday
I hear it all the time
I'm never gonna amount to much
But they're never gonna change my mind
Oh!”
I reached the clique’s row.
“Tell me, tell me, tell me something I don't know!
Something I don't know, something I don't know!”
I sang in their faces,
“How many inches in a mile
What it takes to make you smile?
Getcha not to treat me like a child, baby!”
The crowd went wild. After I went around the crowd a few times, I went back to the clique again.
“I'm on my way
I know I'm gonna get there someday
It doesn't help when you say
It won't be easy~”
When I finished my song, the whole school stood up. Whistling, clapping and whooping filled the air. I grinned. I was in heaven.
