I remember that my grandfather used to tell me stories about different facts that changed the history of many ancient cities through the years; I grew up with all these fairy tales since I was two years old. I call them fairy tales because when I was eleven, I found out that his imagination source was a book called "Like fairy tales".
I loved those stories, although they were a hoax; and I loved the way my grandfather told the stories because he made me believe that they were real. Oh, I loved a lot of things about my grandpa, not only for the tales, but also because he let me work with him in the museum. My father worked at the train station, which had to be all day, so I stayed cleaning the old master pieces of the museum.
I remember that one day, my grandpa ordered me to dust the objects that were in the dark room where they were saved. Well, when I was looking for the duster, I heard a "tic tock" on the wall behind me... I turned around and I saw about thirty clocks that wanted to lead me to the bottom of the room with their pendulums. I followed the way that the clocks were pointing to me. I was sinking into darkness until I arrived at the same room, but everything was in another position and all seemed to be cleaner than the room I had just left… All that was saved there was incredibly gorgeous! I didn’t understand why objects like that were hidden while people would be missing of their beauty.
I left the place to look for my grandpa, but he was not there… the museum was strangely organized, it had the same mediocre art exhibition, but it was empty. When I got out of the museum I prepared myself to walk outside and see what else I could find. Step by step I realized that everything was the opposite of where I came from, step by step I continued listening to the pendulums sound, and step by step I understood that the new world was what we consider “perfect” because there was not damage, there was not disorder, and people did what was possible to help the others.
Since I wanted to know it all by myself, I wanted to see what happened if I did something bad with someone else; I went to the train station and I looked for my father… I didn’t want him to be looking at me when I was doing the “crime”, so it was better to make sure that he was not there. I saw an old woman and I pushed her, I made her fall, and then I stole her money; everybody was confused… there was silence for a moment… Suddenly, the rest of the people started to imitate what I did. It was horrible! Everyone was hurting each other.
Amid chaos in the train station, I could see the world where I was crumbling in front of my eyes like pieces of a puzzle, and I could see myself like I was in front of a mirror, but this time giving the money to the old woman and helping her to stand up. In the blink of an eye, the world didn´t exist anymore; I was at the dirty train station as always, and the image in the mirror that I had seen in seconds was in real life: I was helping the woman and I was giving her the money.
I remember that everyone at the train station was paralyzed, but just for a few seconds; then they started clapping for me like they had never seen something like that before.
I also remember that after what happened, I realized many things: First, I noticed that everything that was in the other dimension was the same as the reality where I came from, but it was the opposite… everything was perfect, but in my world almost everything was wrong, and everything that was happening in one world, was happening in the other one. Second, humanity left what is important and beautiful for life, saved somewhere we don’t know, and people are missing who we really are. Third, clocks taught me that time is running, and we have to know how to use it while we are alive to correct our mistakes and to improve everything around us.
Maybe it was what “Like fairy tales” and grandpa meant; it could happen! It could happen to someone else hundreds of years ago! The illusion left an experience that made people of ancient civilizations to show the wealth and power of their culture to the rest of the world.
Now, we have a lot of good things to show to the world… time’s running.
