Detective Jenifer
Born 1986, M, from Nairobi, KenyaThe morning was quite chilly and dreary. The fact that Mr. Mpure was to attend his daughter’s wedding made everything cheer up in his world. He woke up at dawn as the first cock crew waddled into the bathroom and took a shower. After putting on the attire specially designed for the ceremony, he plodded down the spiral flight of stairs to the sitting room. Everyone was overcome with electrical excitement as they waited tautly for the bride. Everything was already set and everyone looked spic and span. When the bride was ready they all left for the church. They got into a brand-new Mercedes Benz just bought the previous day. All roads led to the church at Holy Family Basilica Nairobi.
The convoy included posh cars and guests of ‘high class’. Within a twinkle of an eye, they had arrived at the church’s compound. Every curious congregation came out to have a glance at the beautiful bride. The car halted at the main entrance of the church. The church was beautifully decorated with crepes, ribbons and balloons of different colors. The wedding bell could be heard as women ululated with joy. All the pageboys, flower girls and best maids made their way to the front seats as the ribbon cutter carried a sharp pair of scissors that cut easily.
Security was a priority and Mr. Mpure had hired MACDONALD AND PERLS DETECTIVE AGENCY, with Jenifer and Sojo being the lead detectives. One thing was certain though, no one knew about how tight the security was in and out of the church. Some few uniformed policemen and women could be seen patrolling the streets around the church. Sometimes others joined the congregation in the celebrations.
The bride together with her father entered the church through the main entrance; she was elegantly dressed in a white American gown whose extremity swept the floor. She swung her hips from side to side as she walked down the aisle. The rhythmic resonance of her shoes stole all the attention from the congregation. On seeing this, the bridegroom was overwhelmed with ecstasy and he at once shot up from his seat. He was sprucely dressed in a black British suit, white shirt made more dazzling with his matching tie. His face glowed with immeasurable elation as he exposed his well arranged snow-white teeth giving an ear to ear smile. He soon received his wife to-be with an affectionate hug.
Soon preaching was over and done with. It was the most awaited time, the heart thumping moment. The couple went to the altar to say their vows. Anxiety took the better part of them as sudden pin-drop silence filled the room. The vibrant smiles on their faces expressed incredulous joy as they built castles in the air on how they would spend their honeymoon and marriage life. Mr. Mpure had paid for the ticket as Mr. Mohr, groom’s father, had reserved a five-star hotel in London for them.
Wild cheers rent the air as the priest allowed them to kiss after the exchange of the vows. Hardly had the groom’s lips landed on the bride’s affectionately, when a certain loud bang was heard. Stunning waves of shock hit Mr. Mpure’s heat-soaked brain as fear ran its icy hands down everyone’s spines. Guilt and concern swirled around Jenifer, seeing the bride and Mr. Mpure held captives as they were frog marched out of the church. This scared her stiff and her heart almost skipped a mighty beat. She had positioned herself at the back bench next to the entrance as Sojo was in front.
She had to do something and do it real fast. But again they had to know how many of these men were there. Quickly, she winked her eye to Sojo and soon they were in action. Like Jet Lee in a kung fu movie, she somersaulted from the floor and grabbed the gun accurately thrown to her by Sojo. By the time she landed down, she had shot two of the men. They fell down with a thud as blood oozed profusely from their bodies. Sojo was already tangling down the other man who drew his gun to shoot at Jenifer. He gave him a strong round kick that rendered him speechless. The man staggered drunkenly and landed on Jenifer’s already set fist. She gave him a strong punch that sent him down on the ground drifting in and out of consciousness.
She quickly drove Mr. Mpure and his daughter to safety as other detectives hand-cuffed the men and took them to the Nairobi Central Police Station. Then they were taken to the Kenyatta National Hospital. At the hospital, the suspects were given high top security. They were all handcuffed to the sides of their beds even as they received treatment.
