The Bus Ride
Born 1998, F, from Gibsons, CanadaShe was waiting for the bus. So was he.
She was visiting her friend, he was going to see his older sister.
As usual, she was late, running with her umbrella in tow, although it didn't do any good against the Canadian rain. He sat on the bench at the bus stop, watching her run towards him. She glanced at her watch, and then looked at the approaching bus.
Would she make it?
She ran and almost made it, but then she tripped, falling into a puddle, drenching herself and him. The bus was loading quickly, but she lay there, stunned. The boy stood, and stepped over her. He couldn't stand girls who were clumsy and late. Although, he thought as he glanced down at her, she was very beautiful. He stepped ontp the bus, and in a minute she followed, and seeing no empty seats, plopped down next to him.
He ignored her.
"Hi." She ventured, her eyes filled with hope. "I'm Sky. You?"
He looked at her, gave a bored sigh, and turned back to the window.
"Sam."
"Oh." SHe smiled. "I love the name Sam. Such a friendly name." She glanced back at him. "Although I don't know if that applies here."
His head snapped towards her. "Excuse me?"
"Well," she replied hesitantly, "you watched as I fell, without so much as a word, although you DID give me a smirk while I was lying in the puddle. You refused to acknowledge my presence when I sat down, and now that I've met you, well," She shrugged. "I don't know."
His mouth dropped open. "Uh, maybe it's just that I don't like clumsy, late girls."
"Shut up." She muttered. Pulling a book out of her bag, she turned away from him, ignoring him. At least she tried to. She always felt uncomfortable if someone didn't like her. After a while she started squirming.
"So, uh, what grade you in?" She asked.
"12."
"Me too!" He didn't reply.
"What school do you go to, Sam?"
He almost smiled. She was so persistent.
"John Apple Secondary."
"Really? Cool."
She didn't tell him what school she went to. She wanted him to ask her, because then she would at least know he was slightly interested. But he didn't ask, and after a while she started talking again.
"I go to St.Hilda's Secondary" She said. Sam didn't say anything. "So where you going?"
Silence.
"I'm going to see my friend. In Petersville."
He was going to Petersville, too. But he didn't say anything. She started to get angry.
"Can you at least say something?"
"Like what?" He said boredly.
"Anything."
"Ok, how about, uh, you're annoying."
She sniffed and looked around. Spying an empty seat at the back of the bus, she picked up her bag and her umbrella.
"I'm going to go to the back." She said. Sam didn't reply. He was actually sad to see her go. He didn't know why he was acting like this. He just didn't like girls who were flustered and clumsy and late. His Dad always told him to get a girl who was prompt and put together.
The bus stopped in Petersville, and he and Sky got off.
"See you." He told her. She just shrugged. "Wait" He called to her as she started to walk away.
"I'm sorry. I'm just, well, an idiot." He laughed almost shyly. "See you later, Sky." He walked to a taxi that was parked nearby.
"Wow." She said to herself.
Sam arrived at his sister's house 10 minutes later.
"Hey, sis," He greeted her. "How are you?"
"Good." she replied, bustling around the house. "Sorry, Sam. I'm expecting a friend. I hope you don't mind."
Sam shrugged. "It's fine. When she gonna be here?"
"Well," She glanced at her watch. "5 minutes ago." She laughed. She was on the same bus as you. but she's usually a little late."
Sam went pale. It couldn't be her, could it? Sky?
A knock on the door interrupted his thoughts.
"Coming!" His sister called out. She ran to the door. "Hey, Sky! How are you?"
"I'm good, Natalie! You?"
"Awesome. Come on in. My little bro is here. He's about your age."
Sky stepped in and glanced at him. Her face went pale.
"Uh, hey Sam." She greeted him.
"You know him?" Natalie asked in surprise.
"We met on the bus." Sky said dryly.
A while later they were eating lunch.
"How do you guys know each other?" Sam asked.
"We used to play soccer on the same team." Natalie responded. "Don't you remember? You came to my game that one time and saw Sky score like, 3 goals, and asked all about her."
Sam went red. "I did not. You didn't even tell me her name."
"That's because she was new and I didn't know her."
Sky giggled. "Thanks, Natalie. I'm glad I'm special enough for you to forget my name."
Natalie grinned, her green eyes sparkling.
Wow, Sky thought to herself, she has the same colour eyes as Sam, but hers are so much nicer because she smiles. She glanced at Sam. He looked at her. She was surprised to see him smile slightly. He was handsome, she told herself. Shaggy brown hair, green eyes.
He was thinking about how pretty she was, her long curly brown hair and big blue eyes. He shrugged it off.
At the end of the day, Sky left, and Sam stayed.
"So what'd you think?" Natalie asked. Sam tried to supress a smile. Natalie caught it.
"I knew it! Sam, nothing makes you smile! You like her!" Sam just grinned.
3 days and 10 hours later, Sky recieved a phone call.
"Hey Sky, it's Sam."
15 months, 6 days, and 13 hours later, they were married.
