Mothers: the source of all love
Born 1997, F, from Vancouver, CanadaIn her childhood and teenage years, Lucy had been a cheerful girl who had won scholarships to universities due to her many talents and hard work ethics. While in university studying to become a receptionist/secretary, she had made many friends but always kept her parents wishes as a guidance to her life. She had continued to live with them even though she was an adult and earning a good income. It wasn't until after he father had died and her mother slipped into a deep coma that she realized she was actually an adopted child.
In university, she had been quite popular as she was easy going, friendly and ever ready to help. While studying, she had taken on a job as an assistant secretary at a high school for work experience. There, she had been careful to watch that her organisational skills never slipped. It was there that she had met Justin. He was also doing a part time job for work experience. As assistant secretary, it was her job to run errands. She recalled with a shiver that whenever she had come into his class, he had always tried to detain her and would tell her stories of his past experience in relationships and would brag of his "success" in entertaining his female colleagues. She had not liked the way he looked at her and was often uncomfortable in his presence. She had told her parents about him and they had advised her to let the job go but she vowed to stick to it.
It was nearing report card time and some teachers had sent in their students' marks right until the last moment. The main secretary had called in sick so she had taken on much of the responsibility. By the time she finished she realized it was already 6 pm and her mom was waiting for her daily evening visit in the hospital. As she printed the documents and inserted them in each of the teachers' mailboxes, she had suddenly had the feeling that she was being followed. She'd whirled around but the only people she could see were the end of the day janitors who were all busy cleaning. It was only when she had returned to the office and was hurriedly closing up that she realized someone was watching her every move. She glanced up, it was Justin and he was smirking away.
"Thought I'd be able to catch you alone. Want to go out tonight?" He asked making puppy eyes.
"No," she replied firmly and avoiding eye contact. "I'm already busy."
"Aw, come on. I can show you what the definition of having a good time means"
"Like I said, NO." She said locking up her desk and all the other cabinets.
She was about to leave when she realized he was blocking the office door. He stood there and waited for her expectantly.
"What can I do to get rid of you?" She asked.
"That's the thing, nothing." he replied with a cheeky grin.
Lucy threw her hands up in desperation and said, "Look I already told you that I'm going through a rough time right now. my adopted mom is in the hospital and I just found out about my true history yesterday before she...." she paused gathering her emotions together. She did not want to cry in front of this man. No, that would have been a sign of her vulnerability.
"I'm listening" Justin said, with a mocking patient look.
"-before she slipped into a coma. Look I don't know why I'm telling you all this." She said brusquely, gathering her work together and clearing her table.
"It's okay, I just want to get to know you better."
"No, go find someone who's willing to entertain your ill timed humor!" she exclaimed as she quickly ducked under his arm and out the doorway while carrying her heavy briefcase and purse. However, just as she was about to reach for the door handle to the parking lot (or her freedom), she felt a firm hand grip her shoulder and he spun her around.
"Don't you ever give me that sass girl. It was up to you to play along but now you've blown it. I'm giving you one last chance. You better listen up and grab your chance when you can. I'd better hear the answer I want by tomorrow. If not, you can hold yourself to blame for the consequences," Justin whispered in her ear, giving her a hard smile as he released her.
She had flushed and broken out in a sweat and had pushed his arm away and ran out without looking back until she had slammed and locked her car door after her and driven onto the main road.
Lucy arrived at the hospital emotionally exhausted. Her mom was still in a coma but the doctors were hopeful of her waking up anytime as she had responded to several of their treatments. Lucy dozed off in a chair while poring over a textbook when the nurse shook her awake. "Your mom's waking up!" She announced excitedly.
Dumping the textbook to the floor, Lucy sprang to her mother's side.
Her mom opened her eyes and whispered, "Hello sweetheart. how long was I out?"
"About 2 nights mom" Lucy replied after a quick glance at her watch.
"You look like you haven't been taking care of yourself."
Lucy's eyes filled with tears. At a signal from her mom, the doctors and nurses retreated from the room. Briefly, Lucy related the trying incident. Her mother slowly shook her head, "And you still want to continue with your job?"
"Yes, there's nothing else I'd rather do. Besides him, everything else is going perfectly. It works with my schedule, I've made friends with the majority of the staff and it's close by!"
"Why don't you go home. Leave it up to me. My time's not up yet, I feel it."
"But mom, you just woke up-"
"Which means I've slept more than you. Plus, the doctors told me it wasn't something serious, they were expecting me to come around anytime my dreams ended." Lucy's mom said, while brushing her adopted daughter's hair from her face. "You've always made me and dad proud. Go home, and sleep, the morning will bring new tidings."
Lucy gathered her things, said goodnight and drove home. She took a shower and collapsed into bed.
The next morning, she was filled with dread. However, her fear was in vain, for, when she entered the office, the principal was on the phone and everyone greeted her with smiles. As he hung up, the principal, an older man who treated Lucy like a grandpa would, turned around to face Lucy, winked and told her that everything would be fine. Lucy was confused but did as she was told and scuttled to her desk. She had calmed down and was typing away when she heard loud voices. She looked around and realized that everyone was out in the main entrance.
'Thank goodness the students don't have class today,' She thought, 'we don't need them to see the staff problems.'
However, she soon realized after half an hour that no one was going back to work yet. Her curiosity soon overcame her and she peeked out the door to see what was happening. She was just in time to see Justin slamming the door behind him and Mr. Holden, the principal, watching his departure with a grim smile. She gasped in relief. At the sound, Mr Holden turned around and explained, "It wasn't just 'cause your mom complained, we also had received previous complaints from the parents of the students he taught, but he also seemed willing to do better."
"Was it my mom you were talking to just now?" inquired Lucy.
"Yes" smiled Mr Holden with a twinkle in his eye. "You're very fortunate to have such a wonderful mother." After a pause, he suggested," Why don't you take the day off? Laura's back to work now and you practically did everything already. Go spend some time with your mom. After all, you look like you need to catch up on some sleep."
"Thank you so much. I'll never forget what you did." Lucy said gratefully as she grabbed her stuff.
She raced out the door and Mr Holden chuckled to another staff member, "It's hard to find such a person in the world now. I'm so glad she accepted the job to work here."
The End.
Thanks for reading. I'll admit that this is probably not the best story you've heard but thanks for reading it. The idea would not leave me and some parts are loosely based on events/incidents related to me. Don't forget to rate my story:)
