It was going to be an easy dive, just a quick swim in the lake. It was in the summer, so the water would be warm, making the conditions nearly perfect. Caleb had done dives like these hundreds of times, so it was no problem, in conditions like these. He stood on the edge of the boat, arms crossed, and all of his scuba gear on and double-checked.
He had been certified for scuba diving when he was only 8, making him one of the most experienced divers in South America. But this dive was different. He was still feeling uneasy, and reluctant to dive, but he knew he had to. Maybe it was the fact that he didn’t have a diving buddy, one of the major rules of scuba diving, but he didn’t care. He had to do this, no matter how scared he got.
He checked his oxygen. 2500 PSI. Just enough to keep him under the water for 20 minutes. He braced himself, and then pushed off with his feet, feeling his back slide effortlessly into the warm water of Lake Maracaibo, in Venezuela. It wasn’t a very popular tourist diving spot, which was exactly why he had chosen it. He let the air out of his flotation device, and slowly began to sink down to the depths of the dark lake.
He swam forward, his legs pushing him through the water, and followed the same route he did every time he came diving in this exact spot. There shouldn’t be any tension or stress while on a dive, but this time was different. He continued forward, beginning to slow down as he reached the spot he had come here for.
She was still there, her long blonde hair floating through the water, her skirt appearing weightless in the clean, but dark, water of the lake. The rope tied around her feet was still attached to the concrete block, just as Caleb had left her. He admired at her beauty, and the peaceful look on her face that wasn’t there when he first threw her into the water. He smiled at her body, turned around, and swam away, knowing he wouldn’t be back.
