Tommy's Christmas Miracle
Born 1954, F, from Ermington NSW, AustraliaTommy Henderson was born with spinal problems, which caused him great pain through his young years. Tommy spent a lot of time in hospital, but he'd always put on a brave face for all the doctors, nurses and physiotherapists who helped him. Some days he felt like a pin cushion.
The boy had a sort of arthritis in his spine. Medication was a normal part of Tommy's routine. Inflammation of the joints was another concern. The doctor had advised for Tommy to have an operation that would alleviate some of the discomfort that he had to endure daily. An orthopedic surgeon would perform the op. Dr. March was thinking along the lines of surgery that was minimally invasive for Tommy. This was better for the surrounding soft tissues. The Dr. decided against the laser spine surgery.
It was Christmas time. Tommy would have to remain in hospital after his operation.
All children love Christmas.
Tommy asked for a tree for his room. It could be a small one. Size didn't matter.
Somewhere in the cold snow, a minute green Christmas tree thought the opposite.
"I can't see the stars at night or the sky by day, as the bigger trees are in the way," he complained to a big strong green tree that towered above him like a giant.
"You are small, but you have an important job to do, my little friend."
"What is that?"
"To be the best you can be."
"I can do that."
"Do you know that God created you?"
"Yes, I know."
"He loves us no matter what our size."
Over the coming weeks, the larger Christmas trees were disappearing, until Tiny was the only one left.
"No one loves me."
"I do, my green tree."
"Who said that?"
"God, my tiny one. I am giving you the most important job."
"What is it?"
"You will see very soon."
At this time, Tommy was wheeled into the operating theatre.
A truck pulled up beside Tiny. It was Christmas Eve. A man gently took Tiny with all it's roots and placed him into a pot of soft moist soil, so the roots wouldn't die.
"Don't be frightened, Tiny."
"I am not, God." whispered Tiny.
Many hours later, they arrived at their destination. The hospital.
Tiny was taken to Tommy's room and set in the corner. Small decorations were hung all over his branches. Fairy lights lit up the tree and sent a wonderful warm glow all around.
Tiny waited.
Christmas day dawned.
Tommy awoke. All his pain was gone.
He looked over at the tree. Slowly and groggily he carefully sat up.
"God answered my prayer."
"Mine, too." whispered Tiny.
Tiny stands in Tommy's bedroom now and forever as a reminder of the miracle that God performed for the boy and Christmas tree.
God is a good God and He will give you a miracle in your life too, if you pray and believe that it will come true.
(Tiny had learned that good things come in small packages. What you feel in your heart is all that matters.)
