Jungle Island Adventure
Born 1954, F, from Ermington NSW, AustraliaSir Professor Alexander Barton had given his entire life to exploration. His daughter Bliss had inherited her father's love of adventure. She was a thrill junkie.
Dillon Berkeley had grown up with Bliss and had been on many an adventure with her. He was a great photographer. So when Dillon got wind of the trip Bliss was organising into the jungle, he jumped at the chance to accompany her. She'd need him for protection.
Kingsley Valance had been Alex's protege for years. He had travelled previously with the Professor on one other occasion to the jungle island. The volcano had been dormant then. King was sure he knew where the entrance to the lost city was.
It was the diamonds that he planned to come home with.
Bliss hoped to discover the location of the ruins of the lost civilization of the Gemol people.
Alex Barton had searched for years for this very site to no avail.
Two other people would be joining them; Viktor and Anya Sayanovich. Bliss thought that they sounded like Russian spies. They were scientists just interested in monitoring the volcano's activity, so they said.
Dillon had a vast experience in travel. He knew that this would be an arduous trek with many pitfalls.
Bliss was well aware of the dangers that could befall them. She was in charge of organising everything for the trip. Dillon had faith in Bliss and he trusted her ability to do so.
All their supplies and equipment would be carried in the plane that would transport them to the jungle island.
The five people boarded taking their seats.
King was about ten years older than the rest of the group. Bliss hadn't liked him since the first time she'd laid eyes on the man, when her father had introduced them.
The flight took a few hours. Not many comments passed between them.
The plane landed on the water with a splash and glided into shore, where the occupants disembarked. Men were waiting on the beach to be bearers and carry the supplies and equipment to the place where they would set up their camp site.
The weather of the area was tropical. Humid and wet.
The island was covered mostly with green dense jungle. The volcano could be seen clearly from the beach.
Using machetes to hack and slash their way through the jungle, the adventurers made slow progress. They were well armed with rifles and hand guns.
At last they arrived at a clearing. By the look of the place, it had been used by someone before them to set up as a camp site.
They pitched their inflatable dome shaped cabin tents in a short time. These tents had built-in floors and of course mosquito nets. They had to be careful even when they slept.
Each retired to their tent for the night.
They were all tired from their walking and long travel to the island.
Early morning came too soon. Bliss wandered down to the water to wash. She turned and saw a tiger not far off from where she was. In slow motion it came at her. Then it lay dead on the ground.
"You are a good shot, Dillon. Were you following me?"
"No, just coming down here as you did."
Breakfast was served.
King asked Bliss about her father and what he told her about the lost city.
"Father, told me nothing."
"You wouldn't divulge anything to me, would you?"
"You are right, Mr. Valance."
The five carried their backpacks and began their search for the entrance.
It was hot in the jungle. The Russians left to go in the direction of the volcano. A loud rumble shook the entire island.
"The volcano is alive."
"We have other things to worry about."
The Russians were not concerned about the recent development with the volcano becoming active.
King decided to take another direction away from Bliss and Dillon. The two stayed on the path. Bliss knew that it would lead them to the last known site that would pinpoint the exact location of the entrance to the ruins.
King remembered a place further into the jungle, where Alex had thought the entrance might be.
King was in a hurry and fell, rolling down a small gradient. He rose to his feet. pushing through the hanging vines that he nearly became entangled in.
He had found the entrance to the ruins of the lost city.
King wrung his hands together in glee.
Bliss and Dillon arrived a different and longer way.
King entered gingerly and carefully. Having his gun at the ready, King Valance proceeded through the darkness carrying his torch.
He came out into a large space. It must have been a great bustling city in it's day.
King had found the gems of the Gemol people, scattered around. He picked up as many of the sparkling stones as he could and stuffed these into his pockets.
Viktor and Anya watched the volcano as red lava spewed out of the crater.
All at once sulphur dioxide filled the air. The Russian couple were overcome by these fumes and so became unconscious when the hot lava flowed out over their bodies.
Bliss and Dillon were just in time to see King returning from the ruins. He nearly knocked them over.
The volcano continued with it's outpouring of lava and molten rock.
"We are in grave danger, Bliss. We must escape from this island, now."
"Yes, let's go. Take photographs before we leave. We are not coming this far to go home without any proof."
"I agree"
Bliss and Dillon ran back through the jungle. The bearers had run off.
"The volcano is supposed to be cursed. The islanders are very superstitious."
"Only take what we need, Bliss."
"What about the Russians?"
"They have probably made their way to safety already."
King ran on and on. Stumbling.
"Which way was the beach?" he thought.
He was growing so tired. He could afford to take a rest. Leaning against a tree, King closed his eyes. In the palm of his hand, King held his dreams.
The Boa Constricter slithered down from the upper thick canopy. The colouring of this snake worked as camouflage very effectively in the jungle. The snake was hungry and wrapped itself around the unsuspecting victim.
King fought for his life, but the snake was too strong.
King's face contorted into a terrible grimace, as the last breath was sucked out of his lungs.
The Boa loosened it's vice like grasp and King's body slumped forwards and the gems slipped through his fingers. It swallowed the bright stones and disappeared into the dense jungle undergrowth.
Bliss and Dillon heard a roaring sound.
"The lava is coming!"
"We'd better hurry."
They went as fast as they possibly could. All of a sudden they were sliding down a muddy slope to the beach. Ash was raining down all around.
"Are you ok?"
"Yes," cried Bliss, as she clung to Dillon. "The others aren't here."
"I am sorry, but we made it. I have the pictures of the ruins."
Standing on the beach, the couple looked out to sea. Alex had become concerned about them and had reported it to the life guard. A police patrol boat saw the survivors.
Arriving back home was hard for Bliss and Dillon.
The news broke that Bliss, the daughter of Professor Barton himself, had uncovered the secret of the lost city of Gemol.
Dillon showed Bliss the photos he took hurriedly of the ruins.
They were outstanding as usual and lived up to his high standards.
"We are not going on any more adventures out of the country, or the city for that matter."
"Says who?"
"Bliss, I love you and I want you to live a long life with me."
"I do too, Dillon."
A happy ending, dear readers, is music to the ears.
