Superhero Saga: How it Begun
Born 2003, F, from Vancouver, CanadaMy secret life started when me, Ellie Roberts, my twin, Kate Roberts, and our best friend, Jay were prank calling our teacher, Mr. Macmillan. Mr. Macmillan doesn’t deserve to be prank called, don’t get me wrong. He’s a really nice guy. We only prank call him because he is soooooo gullible. Trust me. Last Halloween, Jay, Kate and I sent him a letter saying it was Christmas-Halloween and he was going to be an evil clown/baby. He believed it, and put a pacifier in his mouth! Rumor has it that it was his daughter Dolores’s. So we wanted to prank call him. “Your turn,” Jay said to Kate. Kate nodded. “A really good name,” I urged. “I know guys!” Kate replied. She scrunched up her face in thought. “I’ve got it,” she said suddenly. “What?!” Jay and I said in unison. “Elle LaPhant,” said Kate. Jay and I burst out laughing. “It’s a French name, it’ll be a woman calling from France!” giggled Kate. She picked up the phone and punched in Mr. Macmillan’s number. “Hello, this is Rachel,” Kate said in a clipped French accent. “Rachel who?” he asked. “Just Rachel,” answered Kate. “Now, to the point mister. May I please speak to Miss. Elle LaPhant?” Jay and I strained our ears to hear what he would think of Kate’s request. Kate put the phone on speaker. We could hear him shuffling down the hall. “Mary?” we heard him say. “Do we have a Elle LaPhant?” Mr. Macmillan asked his wife. We all screamed with laughter. Kate covered the receiver with a book. “He doesn’t know who lives in his house,” I laughed. Kate uncovered the receiver and we all leaned forwards. “Victor, it’s prank callers!” Mr. Macmillan’s wife shouted. All of us listen. Mrs. Macmillan’s high heels were clinking madly on the ground, we could hear it. “Who are you,” Mrs. Macmillan asked furiously when she got on. “Oh, I’m very sorry for bothering you, dear, but are you sure there’s no Elle LaPhant? It’s very urgent,” Kate said. “No no,” Mrs. Macmillan said impatiently. Kate hung up, and we had a fit of giggles. “Wow….. He… hah!” Jay choked through his laughter. “One more, it’s my turn!” I said. I dialed a random number. “Hello, hello, very sorry, this is important,” I said, rushing through my sentences like a busy secretary. “May I speak to Ima Grinch?” I asked half politely. “Messio Mequacko,” a man’s voice whispered. Red sparks shot out of the receiver. They hurtled towards us. “Duck!” Jay commanded. Kate screamed. I dove into a pile of cushions. But it was too late. I saw the sparks hit Kate and Jay, then they touched me. I felt a little jolt, but it didn’t hurt. “W-what happened?” Kate asked. “Maybe it was a source of superhero power,” Jay said hopefully. “Yeah, not the time. Besides, let me see you fly,” I said sarcastically. Jay closed his eyes. A few seconds later, he was floating lightly in the air. “Wow!” I shouted. “This is amazing,” Jay exclaimed happily. He flew laps around the room, then went a couple inches higher. “We gotta try,” Kate said excitedly. I closed my eyes, and concentrated hard. When I opened my eyes, Kate and I were in the air. “Oh my gosh!” squealed Kate. I grinned. “Let’s go show my Mum,” I suggested. “Kate and I flew towards the door. Jay blocked us. “Haven’t you guys read enough comics,” he complained, glancing around the room, which was littered with comics. “You’re supposed to keep your powers a secret. Now all we need are costumes!” he said. He flew towards the closet, and began to take out a sewing machine and some fabrics. “Man, this is light!” Jay said. “You have super strength,” I said suddenly. “Cool!” said Kate. She turned to me. “I wonder what other powers we have,” I said to her. Kate nodded. I took a steel magnet board out of the closet, and Kate and I each gave it a firm punch. “Ow!”I gasped, clutching my fist. “Well, it’s certainly not strength,” Kate muttered as she massaged her fist. I aimed my hand at the board, and Kate followed. “Maybe we can shoot energy balls out of our palms,” I said. Kate did it first. I watched, awestruck as a fire ball shot out of her hand, and disintegrated as it touched the board. “Good thing Mum got us the flame repellant board,” Kate muttered again. “Go ahead, maybe it’s yours too,” she said encouragingly to me. I tried, and tried, and tried. Nothing happened. “Maybe I can only fly,” I said glumly. I got kinda grumpy, since all I could do was fly. “Why can’t we open the curtains,” I complained. I imagined the curtains opening, and the light turning off. Then we could all enjoy some sunlight. Just when I imagined it, it happened. The light flicked off. The curtains swished open. Sunshine streamed through the window. “I-It was me,” I said finally. “That’s your power I suppose,” Kate said. “Just like that book Matilda. You can make things move by thinking about it. “Cool!” I said. I imagined a tennis racket, flying in my hand. The closet doors swung open, and my orange tennis racket flew out and settled in my hand. “Yep, that’s my power, I imagined that happening,” I confirmed. “Well, we all have cool powers,” Jay said. “What do we do now?” he asked. We all shrugged. “Uh… save the world?” Kate said after a moment. “I suppose,” I replied. I imagined the sewing machine making our costumes. In a flash, they were done. I imagined them flying to their owners and they did. Mine whizzed to my outstretched hand. “Mine has a ‘B’,” I said. Jay’s had a ‘M’. Kate’s had a ‘F’. “I’m Blaze, you’re Firegirl, and Jay, you’re Mega Man, I guess,” I said. There was a moment of silence. Then Kate flew into my bathroom. “Change!” she commanded. I stepped into the closet, then summoned my clothes off and my outfit on. I stepped out. Jay was pulling on his shirt. My outfit was orange and white. Kate’s was red, orange and yellow. Jay’s was blue. “Well, let’s save the world!” Jay said. “Not so fast,” I said. “Let’s all first take a vow. And let us be called…. Uh….er….. the Triple Power!” I said quickly. “I agree, and I know you do too, Kate!” called Jay. We put our hands in the middle, and raised them saying, “To Justice and Triple Power!” Jay wrenched open the window, and we all flew outside.
