I have seen the best minds of my generation hunchbacked over small glowing screens searching for the meaning of life in 140 characters or less; the social life of the classes align no longer containing actual humans, only the pixelated idea of other beings in the vast social network wasteland. Angel-headed hipsters wait impatiently, pushing their thick black rimmed glasses to their nose, burning for the new found novelty of a free public wi-fi hotspot.

This is the beginning.

Gone are the days when recreation would be sought in the fresh spring air away from the all-knowing all-seeing devices that can answer any question before its been queried, in the comfort of indoor places, where it is hip to be seen and not seen at the same time. Eyes glazed over furiously tapping out a message to an unknown persona, completely blind to any interactions swirling about them in the harsh light of reality.

Their glassy zombie-like eyes fixated on their omnipotent phones, devices once only used for carrying voices over miles of cord, now whored out to oblivion, they keep in touch by pictures, video, web; it can talk back and answer in a humanoid voice neither caring or unsympathetic. She will cater to every need. Text will become the only spoken language of the world. u2gd...lol

The texting masses will spring forth to create a new generation; I-Pod babies in the womb with a stylus clenched inside their natal palm await the receipt of these godlike gifts, rendered obsolete by the time they are born; the cycle continuing, until our great-grand children plug the cables straight into their brain, a mass of verbally benigned beings, communicating through primitive brainwaves ignorant of the neighborhoods gone awash to the newly found beachfront property outside of Poughkeepsie.

The cities will continue to attract the lazy, sloth-like, worldwide populace while the farmland withers and dies, blades of grass meant for harvest will go extinct while Soylent Green becomes reality.

So are you one of these people who attribute to the fact, pushing your offspring farther into the digital hole, shutting them up with flashy games and bright lights? Or will you teach them the value of things, rather than the price of everything?

Your call.

There is definitely a price to pay and we have seen how things have changed from a tweet with 140 characters to now articles and threads upon threads of news and lessons on twitter(X). We no longer had that connection like in the past. Everything is just typed these days.

Hi Emerald, I love seeing a new story from you after so many years. This led me to the discovery of this older story of yours I don't remember reading previously, so decided to feature this one first. Even though much as changed in the 12 years since you published this story on Storystar, I think it is still very relevant and timely. Happy short story star of the day.

I again, just wanted to let you know that all the comments that were placed on your story have been lost. Storystar was attacked early Feb. 7 and some damage was caused. I was forced to restore the site to a previous backup taken early on Feb. 4, before all the comments were made. I'm so sorry this happened. But at least your story is still here. All the stories that were published since the 4th were lost also. SO frustrating. Anyway, just wanted to let you know what happened. Take care.
