Lucida's Life
Born 2003, F, from London, CyprusLucida is a young girl who acts very old. She has a mother, a brother, but no father. Her father died in a plane crash when she was born. It was sad for her but she still had a good life. She is 10 years old and was so happy that she was soon going to be 11. But she was also sad because she did not have any friends to invite because people thought that she acted like she was too mature. She knew why all the girls did not like her at school. It was because she always stayed with the dusty boys. The boys treated her like if she was their sister (in a good way) because they protected her when all the girls bullied her, they shared their lunch with her when her mum forgot to put some in and they told her the answers in class when she was stuck. So they were really kind to her and Lucida knew that she was a very lucky girl. She invited the boys over to her house when her mum made chocolate cake but they would not come to her birthdays because they didn’t know what she liked as presents, and since she has to distribute all her birthday cards in front of the whole class, well, the boys thought that all the other girls would say that she loved them, and if they accepted her request, well, the girls would say that the boys love Lucida back. You see, it’s a big problem once somebody starts a rumour about someone being in love because even the teachers know and they start to laugh at you too!! Well anyway, Lucida can’t communicate with her friends because she is too poor to have a computer. Her favourite boy in the boy gang is Tom. He is the one that pays more attention to her in the whole group. He is also the one that she knew before all the other guys because he’s her neighbour. And he is the one that said that she could join the group. By the way, the group was called “The Dusty Men”. And the girl’s group was called “The ballet girls”. Lucida thought that the name “The ballet girls” was lame.
One day in the bus on her way back from school Lucida decided to tell The Ballet Girls what she thought about their group name. And so she started with:
-I think that the name The Ballet Girls is so lame
-Yeah, well you think!
-Yes I do think a lot. I even know that it is lame.
-Err, no way! You do not know what is lame but we do! And you are one of these lame things.
-Anyway I only said that because my mother told me to be honest with all my thoughts.
-Yeah, well to be honest your mum does NOT know much about being honest because I am your other neighbour and I always hear her saying to you that you are the nicest girl in the universe but I don’t think that that is being honest!
That was it!! Lucida had had enough! She pressed on the stop button in the bus and went to see a man that she knew would help her. That man was her old Uncle Ben. He worked in the bully factory. That place was somewhere where he is supposed to sort bullies out. So she went to see Uncle Ben and he started speaking.
-Oh, my dear Lucida! What is the matter? You seem upset.
-Well of course I am if someone starts to bully my whole family!
-Who started to bully you and your family?
Lucida did not respond straight away. She was trying to think how she should describe Sophie Splits. She thought about what Sophie had said at the bus to Lucida and then words started to form themselves in Lucida’s head.
-Uncle Ben, I am sorry that it took me so long to answer but now I know what to say!
-I hope that you are not making it up my dear Lucida.
-No Uncle Ben I am not. It’s just that I could not think about what to say. Well this bully is a girl. Her name is Sophie Splits and-
-Don’t say anything else! I know all about her! So first when she was little her parents were bullies and she came to see me to say that her parents had started to bully her and she did not like that at all. So then I said to her “What are you going to be when you grow up?” and unexpectedly she answered “A bully”. And do you know why she answered that?
-No
-Well it’s because her parents bullied her into saying that. And so that is why she is so unkind to you. Because she chose an easy target.
-But I am not an easy target when I am in the bus!
-But I am sure that they walk home.
-Oh yes!
And so Lucida said to herself that she should keep what Sophie Split said to her to herself. She never knew what had happened with Sophie’s parents.
One Saturday morning, Lucida’s mum woke her up by calling her:
-Lucida darling, there is someone at the door waiting for you! Even I’m sure that it’s two people and one is Uncle Ben.
Lucida then knew that the other person was Sophie Split.
Lucida ran down the stairs saying “Oh No, Oh No!” and her mum was whispering “What's the matter my baby?” And then the doorbell rang again and Lucida’s mum said:
-Go darling, go! Open the door I want to see who it is!
-Ok then.
So Lucida went to open the door. And she was right! It was Uncle Ben and Sophie Split. Lucida tried to go back up the stairs but her mum would not let her.
-So what do we have in common Lucida Franklins? Is your dad in prison too or did he die in a plane crash last year?
-Well he, he
-I know that he died in a plane crash last year! I’m not stupid!
Lucida burst out crying and this time she did manage to go back up to her room. Lucida’s mum was furious! She did not like people who made her daughter cry.
-What is the matter with you you crazy girl? Why did you come here in the first place? And Lucida told me what you said to her in the bus and I know that she did not tell Ben so that’s why you’re acting like you’re the coolest.
Ben had had enough! He did not know what anyone was talking about! He wanted to know!
-I don’t know what everybody is talking about! Just tell me what is going on!
Lucida came back down the stairs and told Uncle Ben what was going on:
-This girl Sophie Splits, the one that you think is a good girl, is a bully girl. I just said to her that I thought that the group name “The Ballet Girls” was lame and then she said that I don’t know what is lame and that what is lame is me. Then I said that I was just being honest because mum told me that I have to be honest and then she said that anyway my mum’s stupid and my whole family is stupid. And that also means you Uncle Ben. I have had enough! I hate my life and everything that goes with it! I’ve got the worst life in the whole world!
-Calm down dear.
Lucida really thought that she had gone a bit too far. She pushed Sophie out of the room and Sophie fell down on the floor and started crying. She had hurt herself a lot. Uncle Ben called the ambulance and they took Sophie to the hospital. They also started to tell Lucida off.
Two weeks had gone by quickly and then Lucida got a call from someone. It was one of the local doctors saying that Sophie had broken her arm and that she was not feeling very well so Lucida went to the hospital to see Sophie. Sophie was in pain. Lucida regretted what she had done but she could not do anything about it. She decided that she would come to see Sophie every day. And she did. One month passed and for the whole of that month Lucida had missed school just to go and see Sophie. And since then they were the greatest friends in the whole world!
