A diamond in the dark
Born 1996, F, from Terengganu, MalaysiaI stared out of the window and gazed to the sky. It was very dark, not many birds were flying at the sky horizon as usual. One couldn’t spot the setting sun because it was hidden beneath the formation of the black clouds. The weather today gave me some goosebumps but realising it was irrelevant, I quickly shed off the thought from my mind and pulled up the blanket from my legs to cover up all my body. It was very cold and both my hands and legs were shaking.
Creak, creak, creak, creeeaaakk. The sound came nearer and nearer. Louder and louder. I was awake and hitched. The sound disturbed me from my deep sleep. What was it? What was the sound all about? My eyes wandered around the room. It was really dark that I couldn’t spot the clock. Apart from the low hum of the air conditioner and the occasional moaning of the pipes, the room was quiet. Pins and needles ran up the back of my neck. It had been three days since I first came to this hospital. Or should I just call it a haunted hospital? With green soaky wet mosses that covered up the building and dozens of webs at all parts, which probably had been meticulously constructed by thousands of spiders, the building was creepy.
Creeeaaakkkk. The sound came again. I was puzzled and scared. Oh my god! What were these things all about? Please god, please, not me! My heart hammered and thumped very hard. I could hear it beating just like the monsoon rain where it would beat like bullets on the roof. I was drenched with sweat. There were so many questions playing on my mind. It couldn’t be my birthday surprise because I had just celebrated it a month ago. No! Not another birthday surprise! Mother! Where are you? I need you! At this moment, I was scared to death. I couldn’t even get my body straight on the bed. Please god, please, help me!
Then, I saw a smooth ray of light from under the smooth hole beneath the door. What was it? The light was pulling me out of the room. And, it was just not only the light, there was also a black shadow. Yes! A black shadow of a figure. I could see it clearly. I was not blind! My eyes were clear and there was no way my eyes were lying. Oh my god! No please, not me! I couldn’t control myself and started biting my lips. My legs and hands trembled very hard. Tears were streaming down my face.
Creeeaaakkk. The sound! It came again! I was shocked. Please god! Tell me, tell me! What were these things all about? Then, in just a blink of an eye, the door opened.
“Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrggggghhhhhhh!!!” I shouted hysterically. It was really loud so that the antique clock with a bell hanging on the wall fell down. I was breathless and panted. The veins on my hands were all popped out. Calm down Keith, calm down. Slowly, I tried to open my eyes which had been locked up since the door was opened. To a surprise, or should I call it a relief, there was nobody at the door! Not a single person at all!
“Fuuuuuuhhhhh” I swept the sweat on my forehead and cooled myself down. I really needed a glass of water. My throat was threatening to choke me. “Where was the water?” I asked myself and tried searching for it in the dark till suddenly,
“Aaaaaaaaaaaarrrggghhhhhhhhh!!!” I shouted. Again. And it was extremely loud this time. The glass of water I was supposed to take was crashed onto the floor. It broke into pieces. I was totally shocked and surprised. Why god?! Why?! Why should it be me?! I was not ready for all this. And the most important thing at this moment, who was she? Who was the girl? What was she doing here? What was her purpose standing there, at the corner of the room? What was her intention of coming at me? What did she want from me? I didn’t even know her. I had nothing to give! Tears were rolling down my cheeks and I didn’t even care about the fact that I am a boy. This thing was a matter of life and death to me. I cried and trembled very hard. So many questions were playing on my mind and pity me, I didn’t have any answers for all the questions. Please god, help me! I moaned in tragic sigh.
A minute later, the girl rose and walked towards my bed. Her steps were slow. I was shocked and couldn’t do anything. I grabbed the pillow tightly and tried not to bite it. Please god, help me! Mother, father! I need both of you! But suddenly, I smelled something. A familiar smell. Blood! Yes! It was the smell of blood! Then, as I looked at her, I could spot her shirt. A purple Barney’s shirt that was drenched with blood. As she arrived exactly beside the bed, she gave me the most sincere and beautiful smile I have ever seen. Her eyes were stunning and sparkling. She had a pair of hazel eyes that shone like a glimmering star. She was beautiful! Her long black hair was trimmed neatly. I was echanted by the girl’s beauty.
Then suddenly, the girl held my hand and lent me a pink note. I surprised and wondered. I looked at her and her eyes were talking to me. She forced me to read the note and I did. The note asked to have my kindness to help her to go to a room. Room 27. And to my surprise, all the fear I had earlier was gone! I felt brave enough! Quickly, without further thinking, I jumped out of the bed and wore the shoes. I held her hand tightly in my right hand. I needed to help her! I must be a hero and I was not a coward like what my friends always called me. I wanted to prove that they were wrong. I looked at the girl and stared through her eyes. “Don’t worry dear. I will help you. You can count on me”, I said. She smiled and a tear dropped from her eyes and fell onto my hand. Oh my god! Is this a sign? Yes god! Yes! I must help her!
Without wasting anytime, I rushed out of the room and the girl was still with me. Just right beside me. Pure and innocent. Together, we ran along the corridor and passed a few rooms. I had never seen these rooms before. But still, there were a lot of spider webs on the ceilings. Creepy and horrifying. The chandelier that was hanging on the ceiling of the lobby, couldn’t be spotted anymore by any man. What was wrong with this hospital? Had anyone came here before me? Or was it just me? I shivered. But, at that moment, both me and the girl couldn’t stop running. We had a destination to go to.
A few minutes passed and we finally reached the room. Room 27. It was located far from the other rooms and it was the only room there. I was tired and relieved at the same time. Then, the girl beside me begged me to enter the room. Without no words, we were talking to each other from the eyes. I agreed to do it and asked her to come with me. But, she refused. She told me that she couldn’t do that or she will be gone forever. What did it mean? I couldn’t understand anything. I was puzzled.
“Baaaaaaaaannnnnnggggggg!!!” I heard a loud crash from the lobby. It was the chandelier. Fortunately, we had just passed it earlier or we might be the ones who got crashed. I turned to my right to tell the girl about that till I recognised that the girl was not there anymore. She was gone. Where was she? I wondered and puzzled. I asked myself a few times but still I couldn’t answer that. It gave me some goosebumps till I realised something on the floor. I bent down and took it. It was a necklace and a note saying, “Please Keith, help me. Open the door and do what you think is right. Don’t make me suffer. I have suffered for a long time. And please, do take this necklace and give it to someone you loved. This is a lucky necklace. Don’t worry, it will bring you no harm. Believe me. Thank you Keith. I owe you a big one.” I was surprised. I held the necklace tightly in my hand. I had to help her!
I stood in front of the room and gathered as much spirit as I could. You can do it, Keith. If you do this, you’re a hero. I tried to give supports to myself. Then slowly, I hold the door knob and began to open the door.
“Grandpa! Grandpa! What happened after that? What did you see in the room?” Lucy asked me excitedly. I smiled.
“Calm down Lucy. I think that’s just what you should know. Now, go to bed or the night bugs will bite you.” I said while tickling her stomach. She giggled.
“But grandpa..” she said in a soft voice trying to persuade me. “Aaaahh. No Lucy. Just go to sleep or do you want your mother to come in and scold both of us like a tiger?” I replied.
She nodded and the necklace the girl gave me was there at her neck. She looked beautiful. Just like the girl. Stunning. I stared out at the stars.
The secret between me and the girl about the room drifted on the breeze like a feather. Nobody ever knew. At first, it was thought that the girl had put a curse on me but there was nothing wrong with me. I was fine. The mysterious feud the people enjoyed playing guessing games about so much as coming close to a whisper of the truth. They just needed to guess more. I smiled. Again. Some kept asking me about that and why she gave me the necklace. I sighed. Staring out to the stars, I said, “And to this day, I still don’t know why she did it.”
