The World of Wonder
Born 2003, F, from Belleville, WI, United StatesThe World of Wonder
“Bye, Mom! See you soon,” I said as I walked out the door and hopped down the steps, my backpack flopping against my back. I walked down our short driveway and on to the sidewalk. It had just rained and it was very sunny out. Then, I stopped. Right in front of me was the end of a beautiful rainbow! “Wow! How rare!” I said as I stepped toward the rainbow. I dropped my backpack on the ground. I lifted my hand and touched the rainbow. Then I started to lift up into the sky! It was amazing. I saw a horse-like figure in the distance. It got closer and closer until it stopped right in front of me. It was a beautiful sparkly unicorn! She had a soft, soothing voice. “My name is Sherbet,” she told me. “Hop on my back and I’ll take you to a wonderful place.” I jumped onto her sparkly back, and she started to fly up and landed on a white cloud. I slid off her back and she flew away. I saw a big sign that said Welcome to the World of Wonder!
“What’s the World of Wonder?” I whispered to myself as I stared at the sign. This must be the wonderful place Sherbet said she would take me to! I ran over to the sign and slowly walked under it. Then, poof! A bunch of magical things were right in front of me. I saw Sherbet drinking from a stream of strawberry yogurt. On the other side of the stream were six pink, little, fuzzy bunnies chasing each other. In the distance I could see a big mountain of chocolate ice cream. “Wow!” I whispered to myself. A small leprechaun came over to me. “Hello, hello, hello!” he said. I quickly jumped back. “Welcome to the World of Wonder,” he said. “Who are you? You scared me half to death! Do you know where I am?” I asked him. “I am Johnny, the little leprechaun. What is your name, little girl?” He asked me. “Emily,” I said proudly. “Well, hello Emily,” he said. “You are welcome to go sledding down Chocolate Hill.” I smiled and said, “Yes, please.” “Well then, let’s go make your doughnut,” said the leprechaun as he skipped off. “Huh? My doughnut?” I asked. “Yes. You have to make a doughnut to sled down the hill,” he said.
We finally got to a humongous factory that was made out of crackers. It said Make a Doughnut. We went into a large room that had a lot of sprinkles and frosting and a lot of different toppings in it. “Now, what size doughnut do you want?” Johnny asked. “Do you want a petite, an average, or a mammoth doughnut?” “Petite please,” I said. Johnny pressed a pink button, and a small doughnut plopped out. “And what flavor frosting would you like?” Johnny asked. There was chocolate, vanilla, peanut butter and caramel. I picked chocolate. Chocolate frosting poured on to my doughnut. “Now you can pick your sprinkles,” Johnny said excitedly. I looked over at a gigantic glass machine. It had every kind of sprinkle you could imagine! There were flower sprinkles, sprinkles that looked like vehicles such as cars and planes, smiley face sprinkles; all different kinds of sprinkles. I finally picked the perfect sprinkles to put on my doughnut. “Stars and hearts,” I told him. Johnny smiled and nodded then pressed a yellow button and a red button. Heart and star-shaped sprinkles trickled on to my doughnut, and my doughnut dropped on to a table. I picked up my doughnut and jumped up and down.
Johnny walked me to Chocolate Hill, it was very difficult to climb the hill and it took along time. We finally got to the top of the hill. I got into my doughnut. I was so nervous but also very excited. I looked down the hill and saw what looked like trees, but they were actually ice cream cones colored green. There was a big wide path between the trees. Little seals, polar bears and penguins were sliding down it. “Ready,” Johnny interrupted, “Set, Go!” He gave me a big push, and… whoosh! In a flash I was flying down the hill. I looked to my left and saw trees whizzing past me. I looked to my right and saw a penguin. We were going about the same speed. He winked at me and slid onto a jump. I was too nervous to go on a jump like that.
I was getting hungry. I plucked a yellow star sprinkle off of my doughnut and stuffed it into my mouth. I finally got to the end of the hill where Johnny was waiting for me. “Now that was awesome!” I shouted. Johnny beamed at me. “Would you like to go settle down at Tropiczanda?” he asked. “It’s very soothing there.” “Okay, but school ends in about two hours,” I said worriedly. Johnny walked me to a place that looked like Hawaii. “Now lie down on this comfy bamboo bed, drink out of this yummy coconut, and relax under the shade of a palm tree,” Johnny told me. So I lay down, sipped my coconut and fell asleep.
I woke up to the sight of pink clouds and blue sky. I looked over at Johnny who was fast asleep leaning on a palm tree. Then I looked at my watch. My eyes widened as I looked at the time. There was only five minutes left until school ended! “Johnny! Johnny! Wake up! School ends in five minutes!” I yelled. Johnny jumped up. “Well then, let’s get you home young lady,” he said. We ran and ran to the Welcome to the World of Wonder sign. We whizzed past a lot of candy, little animals, odd creatures and even Chocolate Hill. Once we got to the sign, we waved good bye and I crossed the sign. Poof! All of the wonderful things were gone.
The cloud drifted slowly down toward my house. When it got close enough to the ground, I fell through the cloud and it drifted away into the sky. I picked up my backpack and hurried into the house. “What did you do today in school, Emily?” Mom asked me. “Wonderful things. Such wonderful things.”
