The last night
Born 1997, M, from Dubai, United Arab EmiratesThe girls were returning from school. The sky suddenly changed and gave way to storm and rain. Lightning flashed through the dark background ripping the sky apart. The sound of lightning was deadening, augmentary to this the girls could hear various sounds, bewitched ones, as though reaching out from the netherworld. The trees waved around like ghosts whose hair was left in the wind to blow in pace with the wind. The horrific setting grew cold and heavy as the girls walked. It seemed as though the Titans were going to escape from Tartarus.
They decided to stop and shelter in the mansion- which they always came by- it seemed to be vacant, or was it in fact really vacant. The drenching rain and the cold outside superseded the spook the mansion sent down ones spine.
They stayed at the door step of the big mansion, ’Let’s go in’ said Swathy,’ No way! We’ll wait for the dreaded rain to stop and get away from this place as fast as possible’, replied Reshmi.
‘You’re not scared are you Reshmi’.
‘You need to feat that need be feared, and that’s not something to take lightly.’
‘Oh! How harmful can a mansion be.’
They stood there debating on the entry. Their eyes stretched on to the gate as it opened with a squeak- as though to attract their attention. A black figure approached from afar.
The clouds gave way to let Luna have a clear look-with her whole face- at the figure. As though her look was tearing the figure apart it wrenched violently and the cloak tore open to reveal a dog, or was it a dog, standing up and looking at the girls with paralyzing eyes as the lightning raged behind it, as though to heighten the ghastly atmosphere. As it howled, Luna covered her face. It was a werewolf.
The girls ran in to hide, locking the door behind them to the outer world- forever! They waved a flashlight that revealed a dusty mansion and atomies dancing around in the air- as the few light they got sparkled at them. The atmosphere felt heavy as it weighed itself on their shoulders.
‘Let’s go up, that thing whatever it was might come in after us.’ So saying Swathy went up the stairs as Reshmi tailed her.
They looked each side before treading further. They entered a room and as they flashed the light they saw the near end of a long dining table. They flashed the light to the other end of the table. They screamed at what they saw, the sight made tears roll and drip from their eyes. A man sat there at the end, served and ready to eat, but that was what was heartless, his own head, the dish, the sight was gory. They leaned onto each other, but Reshmi went ahead. His face was scratched and even his mother couldn’t recognize him, it just looked like a brutally pulverized chunk of meat gored here and there with enough to acquaint oneself that it is- or was- a face. The blood was still not dry and the bloody sight was far above the hurdles that two common school girls had to see while returning home.
They heard the door squeak to announce the arrival of help or the beast itself.
They ran down the steps, with flooded eyes. They saw a three-fingered hand on the door and in a flash it withdrew and a creature came in and went up the wall. They shivered as the atmosphere cooled further and again grew heavier.
Reshmi took the torch and ran the stream of light across the ceiling as fast as the creature tried to avoid the ‘spotlight’.
It suddenly landed with a thud and a scream sounded that shook the mansion and Reshmi, as the werewolf landed on Swathy and blood splashed on Reshmi. She retreated and fell and lay there as the creature looked her in the eye and howled on her face as it also spat blood onto her face. In the background Swathy screamed. The creature ran with her in its mouth and it splashed blood here and there as it went into the dining room.
Reshmi still sat there crying and weeping on her welsh. She took hold of her silver pendent and prayed to Krishna.
She ran to the dining room. The lightning struck again persevering in its try to tear the welkin apart. It also revealed her friend’s head and shoulders sticking out of the werewolf’s mouth and her eyes looked straight at Reshmi with hatred and rage for her failure- for the welsh she committed.
As she threw the light of the torch on it, she stood there spectating the wolf gobbling her friend. Death with its scythe had cut their relationship-the wolf had been the one. How would you feel when you looked death right in the eye? If you knew Death would clutch you and drag you with him while you earnestly detested his coming? If you had witnessed your friend’s death in front of your face from a creature from hell?
It then turned to her with a look of greed- she could read its eyes. She ran as her tears waved and sprang into the air. She went running she felt the air exerting more and more pressure on her and the coldness of the grave. She fell from the top of the flight of the stairs and time seemed to ‘stand still withal’- just as the love-wounded-realist had said. Her tears flew both sides.
She saw herself on the ground bleeding profusely and in an unconscious state. The wolf landed on her. She cried no more but smiled embracing death. She closed her eyes as the flashlight shone at her the last bits of light to throw in its time, as the werewolf crushed it. The werewolf swallowed the silver pendent in its greed. It was the end, the last night- the lights went out, forever!
