The Old Man
Born 1999, M, from -, IndiaFar away from the hustle-bustle of the modern world lived an Old Man. Rumours were that he was so old, he made Japan’s oldest look like new-born children! The secret to this long life? Perhaps that lay in the fact that this man had eaten nothing but roots since childhood, and had never seen technology, much less use it. He lived away from the modern world because he did not want to live materialistically.
Once, a man set out on a journey to find this Old Man, to learn his ways. The journey, a long and strenuous one, lasted for more than three years, and many a times the man thought about turning back, but, finally, he found the Old Man.
The Old Man was a very good teacher, and the pupil was very attentive, but the pupil couldn’t shake off the feeling that there was something his Master wasn’t telling him, some deep and horrifying secret that had been hidden from the eyes of man for many centuries. Taking it upon himself to reveal it, the pupil took to following his Master wherever possible, and searching his bedroom for some sort of hidden panel, or key, which might be a clue as to what this secret might be.
He did not forget the direct approach, though he knew it was futile to go up to his Master and ask, ‘Where do you go during the night, since I haven’t seen you sleep?’ or, ‘Why do you always eat alone in your room, when the two of us are the only people over here?’. Nevertheless, he did try, but just received quizzical glances and more chores as an answer.
Had the pupil pestered his Master a bit more, he might have found out that his Master is not a human being, and that he is the last of his race, stranded on Earth due to the Big Bang. With no means to go back to his planet, he quickly got used to life here. With the arrival of man, he sought solitude, but wasn’t able to hide before a few people had seen him. This was the start of the rumours. Since then, many people sought his advice, and he even shared it, but not in the way they could have imagined; he taught them all he knew, and then, on one dark night, he showed them his true form, followed by a merciful death. Alas, if only this knowledge could have reached the pupil:
One night, the pupil heard a noise outside his room. When he went to investigate, he heard a shuffling noise right behind him. The last thing he saw before being stabbed was a techno-organic being, which held an uncanny resemblance to his Master, and he died wondering, “Who is this old Man?”
