Case 51: The Final Case
Born 1983, M, from Atlanta,Texas, United StatesInspectors J.P Bullet and Summer Brody were heading back to the 169th Precinct. Ola, the day shift dispatcher, dispatched Officer Dale Bradberry to the alley behind Wash and Dry Washateria in reference to a suspicious person behind the building. “That is a couple of streets down from where we are at and by the time Dale gets there the suspect may already be gone,” said J.P. Summer picked up the microphone on the police radio in J.P.’s car. “Dispatch this is 5-George-31, we are enroute to assist, 5-Adam-227,” said Summer. Ola acknowledged they were enroute to the scene.
J.P. pulled up to the Wash and Dry cleaners and advised Ola that they were on scene. J.P. and Summer pulled out their service revolvers and went into the alley. They found Tony B. in a dumpster digging through trash. “Tony B.,” said J.P. putting his service revolver back into the holster. “Man! I was not doing anything wrong, I was just looking for scrap. Don’t arrest me, I have information on that red headed guy with glasses that you were looking for,” said Tony. “Morton?” asked Summer. “Yeah, him,” said Tony. “Get out of that dumpster and tell us what you know,” said J.P. trying to scare Tony. “Morton is hiding out at the old Alf Canning Company building on 99th,” said Tony. “Summer, call Harvey, tell him to go to the Old Alf Canning Company with a couple of unis and see if they can locate Morton,” said J.P. Summer took out her cell phone and walked off so she could get a better signal. Summer finished the call and came back to where Tony and J.P. were standing. “Harvey is on the way over there,” said Summer. “Bubba, I am going to turn around and I want you to be gone when I turn back around,” said J.P. He reached in his pocket and took out his car keys. “Come on,” whispered J.P. to Summer as he turned around and started walking away. Summer followed him back to his car. J.P. got in the car and started it up. Summer had a confused look on her face. “Are you going with me?” asked J.P. Summer got in the car and J.P. drove off.
“If you were wondering what I was doing, I was playing with Tony’s mind,” said J.P. to Summer as he was driving down 23rd Street. “I kinda thought that is what you were doing,” said Summer. “It’s like this, Tony did not commit a crime and I did not want to take him home because he would stink up my car,” said J.P. Summer laughed at what J.P. said.
J.P. and Summer entered the detective office at the 169th precinct. “We got that rat, Morton, and he is ready to talk. He is in Interrogation Room 1,” said Inspector Rebella Lucas. J.P. sat down in his chair. “Aren’t we going to go question Morton?” asked Summer. “In a few minutes I want him to sweat a little,” said J.P.
J.P. and Summer entered interrogation Room One. “You have got to help me. If you don’t I will be a dead man” said Morton with fear. “If you want our help you are going to have to talk and you better not lie because I don’t like liars,” said J.P. “I will tell you the truth, but you have to protect me,” said Morton. “You can start anytime,” said J.P. looking at his watch. “Fred Crane hired me to build robots to steal stuff for him,” said Morton. “Where are these robots at?” asked Summer. “At the dump, I could never build one that suited him,” said Morton. “Why did you start stealing?” asked J.P. “I felt like a failure and I knew that I could not let Fred down. Then after I started stealing for him there was this thrill of being able to get rich quick, so then I started stealing for my own benefit,” said Morton. “Why did you not go to the police and tell them what Fred wanted you to do?” asked J.P. “Because the Crane Family has resources for taking care of people that cross them,” said Morton. “Where is Fred now?” asked Summer. “He is in Los Angeles, but when he finds out that I am in jail he will come to New York to get rid of me,” said Morton. J.P. stood up and walked over to the door. “Summer, I am going to go talk to McCabe, take him to holding when you are through questioning him,” said J.P. turning the doorknob.
Lawrence Langley, the police chief of the 169th precinct, was talking to Operations Commander Rachel McCabe. J.P. knocked on the door. “Rachel, when you get through I need to talk to you,” said J.P. Rachel motioned for him to come in. “Have a seat. Chief Langley was just telling me that he was going to retire next year and he was going to do some traveling and do a little fly fishing,” said Rachel. J.P. shook Chief Langley’s hand and sat down. “We got Morton Nimrod, but we have another problem now,” said J.P. “What’s the problem?” asked Rachel. J.P. started the story, “Fred Crane hired Morton to build robots and he could not build one that Fred liked, so Morton started stealing for him”. Rachel interrupted him “So now we have Morton and Fred is fixing to come after him,” said Rachel. “Yes,” said J.P. “Do you have any idea where Fred is?” asked Rachel. “Right now he is in California, but when he finds out about Morton he will be on the first flight here,” said J.P. Rachel leaned back in her chair. “Let’s put our thinking caps on. We are going to have to figure out a way to protect Morton and capture Fred at the same time,” said Rachel. “Let’s stop him before he gets here to go after Morton,” said Lawrence. “How are we going do that?” asked Rachel. “I am authorizing you to send two people to Los Angeles to apprehend Fred. I am going to go make a call to the Los Angeles Police Department to let them know that two people from this department are on the way,” said Lawrence. “J.P. I am going to send you and Summer to Los Angeles,” said Rachel.
J.P. entered the detective office. “Summer, you and me are going to Los Angeles to locate and arrest Fred Crane. Susie you will be in charge of the SID until we get back,” said J.P.
J.P. and Summer entered the terminal at Los Angeles International Airport. “Wasn’t that flight amazing? It is so good to be home!” said Summer with excitement. J.P. was three shades of green from motion sickness of being in the air. “I would have prefered to have gone by train,” said J.P. They picked up their luggage and met officers Garner Ellerbee and Griff Walker of the Los Angeles Police Department, who were assigned to pick them up and take them to meet Lou Raymond, Police Chief of the 179th Precinct.
J.P. and Summer entered police chief Lou Raymond’s office. “I talked to Lawrence Langley, he sent the two of you to do some undercover work to try and apprehend Fred Crane. I just wanted you to know that I have been looking for him for almost five years and have not located him yet. The two of you are only going to be here for two weeks so don’t be disappointed if you go home empty-handed,” said Lou. “We don’t intend to go home-empty handed, we plan on finding him in the time allotted,” said Summer. “Well, good luck on trying to locate him, and here are the keys to the car that you will be using,” said Lou, handing J.P. the keys.
J.P. and Summer walked out of Lou’s office and headed for the parking garage. “Can you believe him? He does not believe that we will find Fred Crane in two weeks,” said Summer. J.P. did not say a word.
J.P. and Summer entered the parking garage. “Oh my gosh! We are going to be in a 2012 Mercedes Benz convertible,” said Summer with excitement. “Yes, and you are going to be driving,” said J.P. handing her the keys to the car. With excitement Summer got in on the driver side and started the car up.
“What are we going to do first?” asked Summer to J.P. as she drove down Malibu Drive. “The first thing we are going to do is change clothes so we can blend in. Fred probably already knows we are here and has the welcoming commitee out looking for us,” said J.P.
J.P. and Summer changed clothes and then had dinner. Afterwards, Summer went down to beach. “I want to show you something,” said Summer with excitement as they walked down the beach. They walked a little ways further and then she stopped. “Here it is!” exclaimed Summer. J.P. was a little confused about what Summer wanted to show him. “This is my favorite spot on the beach. You ought to be here at sunset, it is so beautiful. When I was a little girl,” Summer stopped, tears started rolling down her cheek as she thought about the past. “What’s wrong?” asked J.P. Summer wiped the tears and started over. “When I was a little girl, daddy would bring me and my brother out here and we would build a campfire and camp out under the stars,” said Summer. “Where is your dad and brother?” asked J.P. “Daddy passed away shortly before me and Matt married. My brother is in the Army and is somewhere overseas. I am not sure where because he never wrote home,” said Summer. ”I am sorry,” said J.P. hugging Summer.
J.P. and Summer entered their hotel room at the Grand Palace. “Oh my gosh! Look at this room! Two king beds, a TV, dvd player, a portable icebox,” said Summer with awe as she looked around the room.
J.P. and Summer were eating when someone knocked on the door. “Were you expecting anyone?” asked J.P. “No,” said Summer. J.P. started digging through his luggage and found his service revolver. Summer started looking for her service revolver as J.P. went to the door. He got on the left side of the door. “Who’s there?” asked J.P. “It is Garner from the LAPD,” said Garner. J.P. carefully opened the door. Garner entered the room. “I was never here. Lou is protecting Fred Crane. I know where Fred is, just don’t tell anyone or trust anyone or he will be gone,” said Garner. “Where is he at?” asked J.P. suspicious of Garner’s action. Garner handed J.P. a piece of paper with the address on it and left. Summer was ready to leave the hotel room to go get Fred. “It may be a trap. Let’s wait until morning when they are not expecting us,” said J.P.
J.P. and Summer went to the address Garner gave them the next morning. “Shouldn’t we call Garner and get back-up?,” asked Summer. “No, remember what Garner said, don’t trust anyone, and I don’t trust him,” said J.P. drawing his service revolver. Summer had a worried look on her face as she drew her service revolver. J.P. got on the left side of the door and Summer got on the right. “You ready?” whispered J.P. Summer nodded her head yes. J.P. kicked the door open. “Police Freeze!” shouted J.P. Fred Crane was sitting at a makeshift desk. “Good work inspectors,” said Fred clapping his hands. “You are under arrest,” said Summer. “You are mistaken my dear Ms. Brody,” said Fred. As Lou entered the room with his pistol drawn. “You are now my prisoners,” said Fred. “Hold It right there!” said Garner entering the room with his service revolver drawn. “Lou, how did you ever get involved with a piece of crap like Fred?” said Garner. Lou’s hand started shaking. “Man, you can still make this right,” said Garner. Lou continued to just stand there with his hands shaking. “Come on man, give me your gun. Lou was handing Garner his gun when Fred reached in the drawer to get his revolver. J.P. saw Fred going for a weapon and opened fire, hitting Fred. Garner handcuffed Lou and went to check Fred. Garner shook his head. “He’s gone,” said Garner. J.P. and Summer put their service revolvers back into the holster.
“I can’t believe you wanted to drive in L.A.” said Summer to J.P. as he was driving down Sunset Boulevard. J.P. looked at his watch. “There is something I want to show you,” said J.P. Summer had a surprised look on her face. J.P. drove down to the beach. They walked along the beach. “There it is,” said J.P. as the sun was setting. “Oh my gosh! I never thought I would see this again,” said Summer with a tear running down her cheek. J.P. put his arm around her as they watched the sunset.
Command Officer Rachel McCabe entered the detective office. “I have a couple of announcements to make. First, Summer, you and J.P. did an excellent job on bringing Fred Crane to justice. Susie Young, you are now the SID Field Commander,” said Rachel. Susie Young had a surprised look on her face. “Me?” asked Susie. “J.P. turned in his badge yesterday and recommended you for the position,” said Rachel. “He did what!?” exclaimed Susie. Everybody in the room was shocked. “I just remembered there was something I needed to add to a report before it was filed,” said Summer rushing out of the detective office.
Summer went to J.P.’s house and knocked on the door. J.P. opened the door and invited Summer in. “What are you doing?” asked Summer. J.P. sighed. “I have spent years chasing scumbags like Brandon Bobel, Morton Nimrod, and the Cranes. Basically, that is all I have ever known. When we went to Los Angeles, you showed me there was more in the world than chasing crooks,” said J.P. “But, what about the SID, everyone there looks up to you,” said Summer. “The SID will function without me, and soon everyone will look to Susie for guidance,” said J.P. “But it won’t be the same,” said Summer. “Summer, just remember this, nothing stays the same, everything changes,” said J.P. walking into another room, leaving Summer standing there with a puzzled look on her face. J.P. came back into the room with a small box. “Speaking about changes, I have something that might change your life,” said J.P. handing Summer the small box. Summer opened the box which contained an engagement ring. “It is beautiful,” said Summer admiring the ring. “Summer, I have been through this before, but there is a saying that goes, it is better the second time around, and it will be the second time around for both of us. Would you marry me?” asked J.P. putting the ring on her finger. “Yes. I will marry you” said Summer putting her arms around J.P.
J.P. and Summer went to Conner’s bar and grill. Conner came over to take their order. First thing Conner noticed was the ring on Summer’s finger. “Holy Cow! Is that - Is that?” asked Conner with excitement. “Yes, it is an engagement ring,” said Summer. “It finally happened! just like I knew it would,” said Conner with excitement. “Dinner is on the house,” continued Conner.
Narrator: J.P. and Summer got married and moved back to Los Angeles. Rachel McCabe went on to be Police Chief of the 169th Precinct. Susie Young became Field Commanding Officer when Rachel became Police Chief of the 169th Precinct. After Rachel and Susie moved up in ranks Harvey Lucas became SID Field Commander. Hard Times fell on Conner McMasters and Conner’s Bar and Grill went out of business. Conner went back to work at the SID.
