Sparkles

"Britney I will catch you! I always win!" Kaylan giggled as she chased Britney around the school playground.
"You wish!" Britney screamed as she climbed up the metal slide Kaylan tailing behind her. As Britney slid down the slide giggling Kaylan grabbed her hand and fell down with her.
"I win! Ha!" taunted Kaylan as she collapsed into the freshly cut grass by the big tree.
"You cheated! Again!" Britney giggled as she sat down next to Kaylan.
"We have to play tonight! I have a surprise for you! Britney exclaimed.
"Duh we have to play! What's the surprise?!?"
"I can't tell you silly!"
"Oh please!!"
"I have a pet unicorn!" Britney said excitedly as she lowered her voice. Just then the teacher whistled the whistle telling all the kindergartners recess was over for the day.
"Liar!" screamed Kaylan.
"Really! I pinky promise." Britney explained as Kaylan's big chocolate eyes got wide.

Later that day Kaylan ran into Britney's bedroom and saw on the colorful quilted bedspread was a little pink plush unicorn with a gold details and little wings with beautiful jewels on them.
"You liar!" giggled Kaylan as she jumped onto the bed with Britney.
"Well I didn't say she was real."
"What's her name?"
"I don't know yet, I was gonna ask you."
"Peaches!"
"Noooo she's hot pink!!!"
"Sparkles?"
"Yes!"
"She's so pretty..."
"She's our unicorn" Britney said as she looked up from Sparkles and at Kaylan.
"Because we're best friends?" Kaylan asked as she fingered with the little jewels on the hot pink unicorn's wings.
"Yes",Britney said,"always and forever".

That's all I remember of that day. About a year later after that day, me and Kaylan were in first grade, we had a normal day quite the same as that day a long time ago. The next day I expected the same. But it was quite a surprise to me that Kaylan was not there. She wasn't there the next day nor the next. I called and called, no answer. It got to the point I was desperate and asked my first grade teacher where my best friend was. She looked down at me and laughed, "Britney, Kaylan moved away". I walked away in tears, Kaylan was gone and she didn't even bother to say goodbye.
6 years later and I am in 7th grade. There is not a day I go without thinking about her. She clearly doesn't care about me, and my friends make fun of me for even bringing up her name. Nobody remembers Kaylan, only me. I have had a few close friends since Kaylan but none of them can truly replace the bond we had. I still have Sparkles, I cannot bring myself to get rid of her. After school one day I go home and do the usual, eat, do homework, and log on to Facebook. Expecting nothing but the usual life complaints and the boring "Like this!" photos, I get a surprising ding saying I have a message. Me being me, and not caring who the message is from, I open it. I immediately fall out of my chair. "No freaking way" I mumble to myself as I clumsily climb back into my chair.
"I know its been forever since I have talked to you and you probably don't remember me so here goes nothing... Hi Britney! I miss you like crazy even though I haven't seen you in 6 years. Trust me living without your best friend and our unicorn has been a nightmare."
Okay people. You probably don't understand how hard it is to read that. Try thinking about having a twin sister, her being taken away from you without knowing it then, what feels like a lifetime later, she messages you saying Hey whats up?. Yep it's that hard.

It's been a little over a year since I got that message. Now here's the funny part, me and Kaylan just picked up right where we left off. Like this whole time we kept in touch, no awkwardness. Kaylan told me that her mom woke her up in the middle of the night, the whole house packed in boxes and loaded in the car, telling Kaylan to get her suitcase and to go wait for her in the car. Kaylan did what she was told and the whole time they were on the road, on their way to Michigan, Kaylan thought they were going to pick me up for a sleepover. Kaylan didn't realize I wasn't coming around till she was 8 years old, she was 6 when she left. When she found me that day on Facebook she was so overjoyed she almost couldn't type. Kaylan still remains my best friend, nobody can change that.
And yes, I am 14 and I still have Sparkles to this day. In fact Kaylan is coming back "home" to live with me for 2 weeks and I plan to give her Sparkles when she has to go back to Michigan. Kaylan and I have a special bond, we are true twins at heart.
