How Bella lost her first tooth

Bella’s tooth was shaking. It was her first tooth, and so it was an important occurrence. It so happened that Bella’s friend Stella’s tooth had also exhibited its first signs of wanting to get out. Bella and Stella were good friends but there was a sense of hidden competition between them. Now that both had a shaking first tooth, it was of prime importance for each of them that they were the first in losing it.

Every morning, Bella diligently gave her tooth a shake. She would also take her Grandmother’s help in this. After brushing her teeth, she would go to her Grandmother who would give her loose tooth a good shake. Stella also was undertaking similar measures from her side. At school, both compared results. Each of them expressed they had an edge over the other, but then secretly were worried that the other one would score.

One Friday, Bella got a pencil with pictures of Cinderella, Tinker Bell, Aurora and Ariel on it. It was blue in color and was a gift from her Dad. Her Mom had sharpened it the previous day and she had carefully got it to school. Bella showed her pencil to all her friends and all of them clustered around her admiring their favorite characters. Her friends begged her to let them use the pencil, and she proudly and graciously gave them the privilege of writing a line each on their book with it. Bella was the heroine of the day. Stella also loved Bella’s pencil. She asked Bella if they could exchange their pencils for the day. When Bella refused, Stella got angry. She tossed her head and said, “Go… I don’t want your pencil. My Dad will get me one in which there are all the princesses…Humph…”

Bella felt bad that Stella was angry with her. She tried to pacify Stella. “Take my pencil, you can write till the lunch break.” But Stella was not pacified. She was feeling jealous that Bella had got the pencil before her and so she shook her head and said, “I don’t want your teenie-weenie pencil. Keep it to yourself. See what I will get when I am going to lose my tooth this Sunday”. She got up and changed her seats, leaving little Bella teary-eyed.

As Bella came home that evening she was troubled thinking about Stella. Stella was angry and moreover she said that she would lose her tooth this Sunday. How did she know that!!! She gingerly shook her tooth; it was tottering but did not look like it would come out by Sunday. Bella sighed. Life was so difficult!!!

In the evening, she told her Mom all that happened at school. Her Mom consoled her and told her to forget Stella’s bitter words, and that by Monday Stella would be back to normal. Regarding the matter of Stella’s tooth, Bella kept silent. This was because her Mom had advised her to not get into the “me-first you-first” race for everything, and she felt her Mom would not approve of this “tooth removal competition” between them.

All through Saturday and Sunday morning, Bella kept thinking now and then if Stella had already lost her tooth. She herself was working on her tooth very diligently, hoping for it to have an early exit.

In the evening on Sunday, her Mom gave her an apple to eat. Bella sat on the porch and bit into her apple. “Crack!!” there was a sound and she felt a sudden pain. She pulled the apple out, and there was blood on it !!!!

“MAMA….!!!”, Bella wailed in terror. Her Mom came running out to see a toothless Bella, wailing with the apple in her hand.

Her mother laughed and hugged her. They then together washed her mouth. Finally, her Mom showed her the fallen tooth. Bella’s FIRST TOOTH!! It looked so small and shapeless when it was out. Her Dad patted her on the back and congratulated her on losing her first tooth. Bella felt very proud. She was also secretly delighted. “Yes!! She had lost her tooth! Tomorrow she could show Stella”.

The next day Bella was very eager to go to school. As her school van came, she rushed towards it. She entered her van with a big toothless grin! Stella was sitting in the first seat, smiling at everyone widely. She had been to the dentist and had got her shaking tooth extracted. Both looked at each other for a moment and then burst into laughter. Sitting side-by-side, they examined each other’s mouths, and then settled down for a ride to their school.

For after all, they were friends and comrades. It would have been good if one of them had come first but scoring equal was even better!!
