Girls too can be your Best Friend
Born 1982, M, from Gorakhpur, IndiaWe all have friends in our life, no matter what age we belong to. Some friends are special and some are so close that you cannot live without them. The attachment towards them is similar to the attachment you have towards your family (your mom, dad and your brother/sister). I always have been lucky to be surrounded by some of the good friends in my life, in every part of the country wherever I have lived, who trusted me and relied on me.
This experience of mine is about one of my best friends here at Gorakhpur. I have decided to keep the name secret and the readers can assume any name for their comfort.
It was a complete new beginning to my career as I was moving out of Bangalore to Gorakhpur to join Indian Overseas Bank. Most of my friends back there were sad by the fact that I am leaving the city and they may not get a chance to meet me but they were also happy by the fact that my career had got a new start. The reason for this emotion is the word “Attachment”. As we had spent lot of good moments together and they were not less than a family to me.
Coming to the story, in fact I was not very happy when I reached Gorakhpur because I did not find this city even an inch closer to Bangalore but slowly and steadily I made up my mind to work here. My first encounter with her was at the Branch itself, the day I joined the Branch. It was a formal introduction. To be honest the experience of introduction was not that great and the word friendship never came to my mind and moreover she was about to leave for Delhi for the second phase of training. I was happy, not because she was leaving but for the reason that finally I could have a full fledge system to work on as I was struggling hard to find a system to continue with my training. I also had wished that she be transferred to some other branch after her training from Delhi, so that I can continue with my work smoothly.
“Man proposes and God disposes”, but this proverb had the reverse effect and she returned to the branch, I almost lost my patience when I saw her face and the very next day I had a fight with her. We did not talk to each other for almost 3 to 4 days and tried avoiding close proximity. You may think hatred is hard to go by but that time is a great healer. I saw that she had already allowed letting go the feeling of hatred and I upon seeing that decided to do the same. Though the things had settled down but the improvement in the relationship was snail slow. We started talking to each other but in bits and pieces. She most of the time was busy talking to her boyfriend on the phone and I was least interested to know who the person was but slowly I got to know who the person was and his name.
Time kept on passing, day by day, and the feeling of hatred was totally gone. By this time we had developed a sense of trust on each other. I from the start had the habit of bringing the laptop in the branch which was used by my colleagues whenever needed including her and it was during the month of February I finally got my internet connection going. My favorite pass time was chatting with my friends but this time I had gone one step ahead and had started video callings with my friends. She was interested in video calling but not with me but with her boyfriend. one day she asked me for the laptop, she said, “Sandeep, could you please lend me your laptop, I want to do a video calling with my friend.” I asked, teasing her, who the person is and she said try to understand who is he. The chat started and I had to interrupt in between in order to stop it but the glow on her face after the chat was beyond my imagination. I never before had seen such a glow on her face. She was so happy that she promised me a party which is still pending.
Meanwhile I had my second phase of my training scheduled at Delhi; I came back on April 15th. The month of April and mid of May was the busiest as I was shuffling between places because of my deputation. My final resumption of work at Gorakhpur was on 18th May. By this time I came to know that her relationship with her boyfriend was over, I knew this when she asked me about how to block a person on facebook. I could understand the pain a person goes through when the relationship breaks as I myself have gone through the same; these are a series of emotions of guilt, sadness, anger, and fear. These are something you want to control but they ultimately manage to become turbulent. This is a situation you don’t know what to do but I never saw a sign of discomfort on her face; she kept smiling despite intense pain inside and never revealed to anybody about this.
Time flies like an arrow and I got transferred to the main Branch. till this period I did not have much interaction with her. Finally it all started with the friendship on the facebook. One day I saw her online and the conversation heated up. It was an intense one, we chatted and chatted and this continued for hours and my laptop battery got discharged twice, we talked about our childhood, our breakups, likes, dislikes, fun n mischief’s, etc. It really made me feel happy and satisfied. This was probably the second time I felt the same shine on her face though I could not see her face but her emotions definitely depicted that. We all of a sudden had developed a sense of mutual understanding and trust. This may be due to the fact that we were looking for a close friend with whom we would be comfortable sharing our thoughts and feelings. Though after my transfer I rarely got a chance to meet her in person but by that time our bonding had already become strong. Next series of chats were followed by video calling which further improved our relationship. One thing I realized is that she had matured a lot as a person after the break up and a sense of responsibility was slowly getting built inside her. She started giving importance and value to me as a friend. It was just in 15 days that I had become one of her closest and trusted friends.
Finally the letter for 3rd phase of training to be held in Delhi came for her, after which she would no more be here. It would be a Good bye for her. She was very sad by the fact that finally the time is about to come when she will have to leave this place. I almost could feel her eyes had gone wet when I asked her if she was feeling sad about this. She said yes as there were lots of sweet memories attached. We continued exchanging sms that day as this is our preferred medium of communication.
I don’t know what will happen in future and I no more think about it. For the time being our day starts with wishing “Good Morning” to each other, then our conversation resumes at our work place and ends with “Good Night”. It is the sense of commitment rising inside us which is actually important. Any relationship without a level of commitment is useless whether its family, friends or relatives. One thing that I want for her is that she be happy all her life wherever she goes. For me I just found another best friend in my life.
Keep friends in your life who truly love you, motivate you, encourage you, enhance you, and make you happy. Being honest may not get you a lot of friends, but it’ll always get you the right ones.
